Ok, so we're now 0-2 with an absolute gauntlet of an upcoming schedule. I predict we lose a close one to the Chargers, Beat the Bills, and lose another close one to the Jets. At that point we're 1-4, with playoff hopes all but over.

Chad Pennington is in the last year of his 2 year deal, and who really knows if we're going to re-sign him or not. I'd say it's safe to say Chad P is what he is. A great game manager who doesn't make mistakes and will always make a young team better. But can he bring this team to the next level? I don't think so, and I think that's why he won't be re-signed.

Which brings me to my next point. If it does come to 1-4 or 2-5, do we have to look to see what we have in Henne? I say absolutely for a few reasons

    1) The Chad P. issue and the last year of his contract as stated above
    2) We have to see what Henne has. Just in case he flops consistently, we have to look for a replacement in the offseason
    3) He'd be walking into the perfect situation for a young QB. A Run-first team just like Big Ben, Matt Ryan, and Joe Flacco all had with their respective teams.
    4) We have a decent to above average run-blocking OL where there would be less pressure on the QB
    5) Our OL provides pretty decent pass protection for a QB.
    6) We don't have that superstar WR who's going to get in the QB's head and put extra pressure on him
    7) We run a very conservative offense, perfect for a young QB

I'd say it's the ideal situation for Henne if this team falls to 1-4 or 2-5. You'd have over half a season to see what he's got.

EDIT: I forgot one of my main reasons. Against the Colts, we had 3rd and 6 and 3rd and 7 on back to back drives where we ran the ball and settled for 47 yard field goals. It appeared as if Henning didn't really trust Chad Pennington there, which is ridiculous because if anyone's not gonna screw up in that situation it's Pennington. My point: If you're not gonna trust Pennington, you might as well just put Henne in to hand the ball off and run the ULTRA-CONSERVATIVE offense.

week 4 against the bills if we're 0-3 or after the bye week against the Saints. The reason I would wait till the Saints game if we win against the Chargers is we then play our division. If we're 1-2 we are in the hunt if we sweep our adversaries. It probably isnt going to happen which is why I would want Henne to get the bye week to practice and then we can officially start the Henne era

BTW on that last 3rd and 6. It was an either or play. lft up to Pennington to run or pass. So even Pennington doesnt have faith in Pennington

I honestly don't think you want to bring him into a game that he's going to have to struggle against the Defense. If we go 1-4 though, next up is New Orleans, and that might not be a bad test for him. Maybe the Bucs down the road. But the last thing we want to do is throw him to the wolves against a strong Defense right now.

I'm still optimistic that there's a chance, and probably won't be considering this really myself until after this weekend's game. We pulled off an 0-2 start run to the playoffs last year, its not impossible, but an 0-3 is going to kill a lot of the hope.

Put him in against the Bucs. I forget what week it is, 9-10 i think.

See, the bucs will be Hennes most realistic shot at a win, and when we put Henne in, we want him to win. We're not gonna start him against a division rival, so the pats, jets, or Bills games are not an option.

let Pennington play until that week. I hate to say it but the schedule is so effin rough for us that even if Pennington plays lights out I don't see us anywhere near a winning record at that point. It'll be a perfect time to throw Henne in and see what he can do.

I know it's about realistically winning and confidence.

But if we're 1-4 or 2-5, does that really matter? Wouldn't it then be the point to see what Henne can do?

Putting Pennington in to make us 7-9, 6-10, or 8-8 does nothing in comparison to Henne making us 5-11. It'll just provide us with the information we need heading into the offseason.

If we start off 0-4, I would bring him in to start on week 5.

Nothing against Pennington but at that point the season is lost. The best use that could be made of the remainder of the season would be to determine if we have a legitimate starting QB in Henne or whether that position would need to be addressed in next years draft.

i absolutely dont want henne's first game to be the Jets defense. Thats just a recipe for a 3 or 4 turnover game. His second game not a problem. But I want his first to be an easier defense. Saints or Bills seem to fit the bill

I'm ready to give Henne a shot also. This team needs some sort of spark... badly.

The time was right at the beginning of the season. Chad Pennington was brought into Miami for one reason last year. That reason was to stabilize the team and the organization. Fortunately or unfortunately, Brady got hurt, and we won enough games to reach the playoffs. The ESPN guys can praise CP all day for his accuracy on those short routes but on the plays that will help you win games, the Fasano and Ginn passes, he was late or inaccurate enough to help cause them to be incomplete. CP is what he is and perhaps coaching staff has preached the play it safe mantra too often causing him to be more deliberate in his throws but for me the time to move forward was at the season's start. And no it has nothing to do with these two losses, it is simply a desire to see the young Dolphins team take those next big steps even if we have to take a couple back first.

I could see the resemblance of that situation. But Henne is in his 2nd year of this offense (Beck was rookie) and our team is A LOT better than that 2007 team. That's the main reason I feel that this is a perfect situation to put Henne in. We have a decent OL, decent run game, and he's been running these plays for 2 years now.

If he comes in and fails for 9 games, we'll have a good idea that he's not right for the spot. If he succeeds, then great. If he's mediocre, you can also begin to look around. But we need this question answered going into the offseason.

EDIT: I've also always thought Chad Henne was more capable of being an NFL QB than John Beck. Remember, Henne played in a pro style offense as a 4 years starter in college so he was way ahead of Beck even as a rookie and Beck in his 2nd year.

I think the quarterback that gives the team the best chance to win should play. As far as which QB that is, I'll leave that for the coaches to decide. If I had to guess, I'd say it's Pennington.

If Henne isn't that QB, I don't think he should start until we are mathematically eliminated from the playoffs.

I don't buy the whole idea of waiting for a poor defense to pay Henne. The Jets didn't wait to play Sanchez. The Falcons didn't wait to start Ryan. Either they have it or they don't. If Henne has it, he'll be fine. If he doesn't, then we'll find out. I am all for starting Henne now. Get him time this year, so next year the growing pains are gone. Playing Pennington for most of the season only serves to make more of next year Henne's learning year.

The Jets and Falcons didn't have veteran QBs with playoff experience at their disposal when they made the decision to start their rooks. And both Sanchez and Ryan had to earn the right to start in training camp.

jets, falcons, ravens, etc did not have better option at QB. Im sick and tired of these teams getting credit for 'going with the rookie' when really, their alternatives were pure crap. (Kellen Clemens, Joey Harrington or Kyle Boller? ha, i'd go with a rookie too)

a zone blitz defense is a recipe for disaster for a guy who doesnt have the experience to deal with them. Hell its a recipe for disaster with a 10 year vet. I have no problem if its his second game but that is a brutal way to introduce a QB into the NFL. You are probably looking at a 3 or 4 turnover day

I know it's off-topic, but we're not losing to the jets at home. They're not that good and we're not that bad.

Back to the topic: Henne wouldn't have converted all those critical first-downs on MNF. Penny's composure and pocket awareness is why we were even in the game to begin with.

You guys are missin my point. My point was not that I expect Henne to necessarily come in and light it up. I'm merely pointing out that you either have a QB who can shrug off a loss or you don't. You can't keep him in the bench cause you're afraid that he will not cut it. My point was, the Falcons and Jets put their futuere on the dield immediately, not waiting for the right defense to be opposite him.

A small caveat I meant to mention...if we start to put White in, and allow him to throw the ball out of the Wildcat, then keep startin Pennington. That way we have a guy coming in that can stretch the field occasionally, but we keep the game manger in there to keep the game plan going. We NEED to stretch the field. Like someone said in another thread, can you imagine what our offense could have done Monday night if we had a QB out there who could have stretched the field??

    Wow, talk about overreaction...

Why would you tell people to grow up over this thread?

Now to respond to post. Last year we had the easiest schedule in the league. 8 out of our last 10 games were against opponents under .500. The only 2 teams that finished over .500 were New England (and they beat us) and the Jets (9-7). And even after going 9-1 in those last 10 games, we needed every one of those wins to make the playoffs.

If we go 2-4 or 1-5 this year, you can bet your bottom dollar we ain't makin the playoffs. That's just reality. Last year was the easiest schedule in the league. This year's the hardest. Simple common sense says history will NOT repeat itself.

To scream and curse because people are speculating whether or not Henne will be brought in if it comes to 1-5 or 2-4 is ridiculous IMO. Chad's in the last year of his contract and as a result we're gonna need to see what Henne's got. He'd be stepping into a great situation for a young QB.

It would be nothing against Pennington at all. The organization will simply need to see if this guy Henne has what it takes and a good 9 games in a starting role should provide a good chunk of necessary information heading into the offseason.

A little reminder......prior to the Jets releasing Pennington, our "rookie" Henne had also won the starting job in camp.

Now that Penny has proven why he was available in the first place....now would be a good time to get Henne in there and see if we need to keep looking for a QB.

Playing him the last 5 games of the season isn't a very good sample to make a solid judgement..

I don't think its something the coaches will even consider until we would be mathematically eliminated.

That being said, we as fans and the team shouldn't be focused on that. San Diego is a must win, lets root for Pennington to put together a solid game. The future isn't now, yet.

Lets go Phins, beat the Chargers!

If we lose to the Chargers and Pennington has a poor game I'd start Henne week 4. If we are 0-3, we ain't making the playoffs and Penny will either be gone or be our backup next season, I'd be OK with either one.

This is what I was going to say:

If we lose to SD (a distinct possibility given our recent play combined with it being a west coast trip on a short week), and if we lose one or both games against Barffulo and the Jests, then I'd say Henne starting against the Aints after the bye is all but a certainty. No way we continue to stick with a guy who can't throw the deep ball, and who probably won't be here next season for a kid who may be as good as (or better than, maybe) Ryan and Flacco.

Now, if we somehow turn it around, and win two or three of the next three games, well...then all bets are off. But, honestly...I just don't see that happening. Much as I hate to say it, we got some serious issues, especially on defense.

But, then writing it got me to thinking...it was week three last season when Sparano & Co unveiled the Wildcat to spark the team. Right? And, look what happened. Not only did we spank the Patsies, it also really turned our season around. So, I'm going to go out on a limb and say if Pennington continues to miss open receivers, and hold this offense back with his inability to throw the deep ball, and we're behind at halftime against Diego, then I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Henne playing in the second half this Sunday. And, I know about the inactive stuff. Not sure how that all shakes out. I'm just sayin'...it wouldn't surprise me.

But, what the hell do I know?

The only difference? Henne should go in with a good offense line, a healthy Ronnie Brown & Ricky Williams, and a solid receiving cast.

I wouldn't want anyone to go through what John Beck went through... I actually felt bad for the guy.

We are 10x that dreadful team was with John Beck. Henne would thrive in this system with his arm strength. It's the mental part we have no clue about yet. We need to know what we have in Henne before this season ends, imo, to prepare for Free Agency and the draft.

As far as going 2-4 even 1-5 i dont see why its not a possible? Patriots dont look dominate and how many first yr coaches(RYAN) pull it off all yr. we are in the mix till the end IMO. The divisions games are what matters and all these so called great teams still have to play and its week two.

I do believe its a bit nuts to start calling for Henne when he didn't show much in preseason. Until we are mathematically out i go with Penny ! Its way to early (kinda why i get nuts seeing people jumping the gun)

but we capable, going to the west coast on a short week is hard if we go 0-3 im still believing 1-5 could spark a turn around.

I think that he should be aware of the zone blitzes because he's seen them. We saw it against Tampa and he ended up turning it over in that game because of a designed zone blitz.

I agree with you're points though, let him go against an easier defense. I think a coaching staff wants a guy with little experience to gain some confidence. Let him build the confidence with easier defenses and then he should be ready for the tougher opponents after a couple weeks of getting his feet wet, I guess you could call it.

Just with our horrible schedule I can't see 10 wins (at least) we will need to get into the playoffs if we lose to the Chargers and go 0-3. If Penny stinks up the place and we lose I see no reason to not start Henne at that point. We need to know before this season ends if we need to draft, trade for, or pick up a QB in FA next year.

    It's all good bro:knucks:

Premature to call for Henne now at 0-2, I completely agree.

But at 2-4 or 1-5 which is a distinct possibility, I'd say it becomes a serious discussion and something the coaches are going to have to think about.

And as much as I'd like to think at 2-4 we'd still have the slightest shot, I'm just not so sure that's a realistic possibility.
