Maybe it's the man crush you have on him that's clouding yours......because if you look back thru this thread, you won't find me mentioning Penny ONE TIME.....

I don't think Penny had a bad game actually....in this particular game, he's not someone I would target as the reason we lost.

However, he does make it harder to win games like this, against a high powered offense

You do realize that stat doesn't help your argument, right?

The fact that Manning had an average night in terms of how many possessions or chances to score?

He just took less time to do it......big plays.

How many are surprised? Did you watch the Atlanta game?...we should have been blown out in that game. Our pass defense is terrible.....we're going to give up a good amount of points this season unless the coaches come up with a plan.....and quickly.

And once again I will state...the defense was bad.......really bad. Just like it was vs Atlanta and will likely be Sunday vs the Chargers. If we want to win games such as these that feature a strong passing attack with the ability to score quickly and often, we will have to stop settling for field goals.

I'm shocked to see that you're the only person to bring this up.....it was obvious all game long. Out of 84 plays, we ran 12 out of the wildcat....that's ridiculous when it was obvious that the Colts couldn't stop it. Should have been no less than twice that amount.

One of the oldest rules in football........If something is working, you keep doing it until the opposition shows they can stop it.

Given the lack of scoring fire power we have.....this team needs to lean on the wildcat as much as possible.

    Dupree,

I understand what you're saying, but when I look at the really good defenses, how they blitz and how effective they are, I don't see ours being of the same kind except on rare occasions. I think we have routine blitzes that seems generic in nature, and not much more.

If the defense that showed up against Atlanta showed up against the Colts, Miami wins.

Right, because we did such an amazing job shutting down their TE that game

If Ryan is a little more accurate, it's a blow out...period

Ryan was hit a lot during that game. On these magical throws where the wide reciever was wide open Ryan had to move around and got hit.

    Hitting quarterbacks hurts accuracy.

Unless your opinions change per thread, it doesn't matter that you didn't get out your Penny dislike on this thread. Your stance on him is well documented on these boards. Now to the point, the offense didn't lose us this game, the defense did. We didn't play conservative or for field goals. If one of the big laments is that there were 3 dropped TD passes then there cannot be an argument we played for field goals.

Penny didn't lose us that game, again the defense did. You cannot claim he can't win "that type of game" when there hasn't been a game anything like it, in more or less...ever.

These are simple logical conclusions. Not seeing them, leads one to believe there's a bias.

We almost exclusively run out of the wildcat. To say we didn't use it enough is to imply our standard running game wasn't working. The problem with that is, it was working just fine. I cannot understand the complaints about a unit that put up well over 200 yards rushing, produced 23 points, and controlled the clock by a ratio of 3:1.

I figured that's what you were about......so I'm just gonna ignore that part so that is doesn't continue to get personal. Once again, I stand by what I said... and I never said the defense wasn't bad, or at fault. I just wasn't surprised that Manning lit them up.

We ran out of the wildcat 12 times out of 49 rushing plays....hardly exclusive. Those 12 plays accounted for almost half our total rushing yardage. And 23 points isn't a lot......not against Manning, not with this pass defense.

So basically you're saying that it's ok to stop doing something that the other team has no answer for...

    Ok.

No, you misunderstand. When we call a wildcat play its almost exclusively a run. Also understand, the wildcat isn't an every down formation. It has to be called at the right time to get the big chunks of yards.

The right time was basically almost every time we ran it. They weren't showing any signs of stopping it......I understand it's not an every down formation but until someone shows you they can stop it, why stop yourselves?

Personally I'd like to see us run it 30 times vs the Chargers this week.....

Which means we called it when we were supposed to. Our regular running game was working just fine as well.

If not for the success of the wildcat and the rushing attack.......it's very possible the Colts score 50+ in that game. So no, I wouldn't have been surprised...

Wildcat....... 12 plays for 107 yds 8.9 per play

Non wildcat rushing plays........37 for 132 yds 3.6 per play

Given those numbers, you're gonna tell me that using more wildcat was a bad idea or wouldn't have mattered?

I think the reason the Wildcat is so effective is because it isn't used on every play. It's a deviation from the standard offense that gives the defense a different look. And ultimately, isn't that the whole point of the package? To keep teams off balance with a different set of defensive assignments? JMO.

Yes I understand that you know the Defense was bad...

Just proving the argument that an average game for other Defenses against Peyton last year, is far superior to our less than mediocre performance on D...

Proves the fact that the root cause of this loss was the D... Ball control and 23 points would could have won this game for just about every other team in the NFL...

I agree.....the question is how much is enough or too little?

If they're not stopping it, seems like a good time to find out.....no?

I'm glad yo called that out. I was a fixin' to quote that comment and then state ...........

    "That's a gosh darn LIE!"

The crazy thing is that we ran it more than consecutive attempts in one series for plus 5 yards each time. Then for no good reason whatsoever, we just stop. My suspicion is that ESPN provided us with a good reason why we discontinued the attempts. If you watch the game again, you will see David Lee holding up a playcall through hand signal. The play call was 5 fingers. When I saw that I said, "holy crap!". Why?

Six years ago with a little league team I ran a no-huddle six play offense. Before the game I would say "the middle number is the play call". So then I would rattle off "6-1-2". The playcall was "One". So we would run the "One" play. What was so alarming about David Lee's hand signal?

He held up five fingers. He said "five" out loud as the wildcat offensive personal was on the field to run the second consecutive "wildcat" play. I'm thinking, "You can't be serious." What does this mean?

It means that when we are in Wildcat, Dan Henning passes the playcall from the booth (where he can see everything) to a guy on the sideline (who has the worst seat in the house). It means that we have so few plays in the wildcat formation that the entire offense can remember the play call through a single digit number.

The final verdict: The wildcat is a gimmick and nothing more. That my friends is a damn shame..........and it also explains why we abandoned the wildcat. We abandoned the wildcat because this coaching staff thinks that they must "outsmart" the other team. The only thing that they accomplished was "outsmarting" themselves.

It was effective in this game because the Colts are an undersized defense. Undersized defenses are the reason for the abandonment of the Tampa 2. The Tampa 2 still stops the passing game. The Tampa 2 (just like Buddy Ryan's 46) was created to stop something. The issue with the Tampa 2 is that the focus is speed versus passing game. You have strong safeties at linebacker positions. You have defensive ends playing defensive tackle positions. When you stack your roster with Tampa 2 personell you give up the size needed to defense the running game. So what does this have to do with the price of beans in China?

Deviation from the standard offense SHOULD NOT be the whole point of the package. The point of the package.......(scratch that).........The point of the game is ---

Who cares about "off balance"? Who cares about a "different set of defensive assignments"? If you are doing something that they can't stop - you continue doing it!!!!!

The package is nothing new and for longer period of time than you and I have been alive - it was a winner.

I apologize for bringing this Thread back up...just wanted to add a few things, not that it changes the facts brought out originally...

Like I said, there are a few things Offensively that should definitely improve or IMO this year will be another one to remember...

his Offense needs to score more points a game...why?

    1- They are # 1 in TOP...

    2- They are # 1 in TDC (59%)... I know one game...

3- They are # 4 in Plays from Scrimage...

but they are # 27 in Point Scoring...

and the last point is the one that needs to improve considerably since our Defense will probably remain inconsistent as the year unwinds... specially when facing passing teams...

It is uncharacteristic that an Offense within the TOP 5 in those categories can be around the bottom in Point Scoring...

I know others have stated they should have scored more... but I was just looking for data to back that up...

So lets hope the trend reverses today at SD..
