There's a chance Florida wide receiver Percy Harvin will miss the rest of spring practice due to a heel injury, UF coach Urban Meyer said after Monday's practice.

"It's obviously not going to affect the fall," Meyer said. "It might effect the rest of the spring. They're going to get a second opinion."

Harvin did not practice Monday and his foot was in a protective boot.

RB Competition

Carter said it's too early in the competition to name a leader, but he did say Moore and James hold somewhat of an edge based on their past playing experience.

"We're evaluating everybody and giving them a chance to really kind of get comfortable with me and hone in what we're trying to do scheme-wise," Carter said. "Obviously, Kestahn and Brandon, because of experience, are a little bit ahead mentally. I should say a lot ahead because they've played and they understand what we're doing."

Despite a lack of size, James could be the dark horse contender to win the job.

"I think he can (be an every-down back)," Carter said. "He's done everything we've asked him to do. He's got all the ability in the world.

"He's so fast and he's one of the best kick returners in the country. Why can't he do that as a back? He's shown that. He can pass protect, he can play receiver, he can do it all."

Florida had the Heisman Trophy winner last season, but ultimately the season was a bit of a disappointment. Despite not having a consistent tailback, the offense was fine; it was the defense that struggled. Rebuilding the defensive line – and finding out if USC transfer Emmanuel Moody is the answer at tailback – will make spring football interesting in Gainesville. the defense took a hit after they won the national title, so that was understandable.... shame that they didn't have the talent to stack back up in there though.

It hasn’t been perfect, but for the moment, UF coach Urban Meyer is satisfied with how far his defense has come since the fall.

“We’re improving on defense,” Meyer said. “I’m not very pleased, (but) I’m pleased with what the defense has done in the last couple days.”

The last two practices have ended with the offense having to run because of losing to the defense in 11-on-11 drills.

Meyer said the two most encouraging things he’s gathered from practice so far have been the defense’s improvement and the play of the secondary.

“From what I see and what I hear (safeties) Major (Wright) and Dorian (Munroe) are doing a very nice job,” he said. “I feel good about the safeties. … I really like the corners and our two safeties are playing very well.”

Patchan plays both ways
Meyer said after Monday’s practice that he didn’t think the defensive line had progressed. On Wednesday, it looked as though he might have a solution.

Enter freshman and early enrollee Matt Patchan. The 6-foot-6, 238-pound offensive lineman from Seffner worked at defensive tackle and Meyer said Patchan’s immediate future could be on defense.

“We moved him full-time defense right now and he’s getting his extra work on offense,” he said. “We need help on defense and I think he’ll get on the field faster that way.”

Rainey improving
The speed of freshman running back Chris Rainey was never in question. Just one look at his tapes from his days at Lakeland High shows that. He looks just as fast in practice as well.

The only real highlights from the offense during the 11-on-11 drills came from the 5-foot-9 Rainey, who seems to hit another gear when he cuts up the field to the outside.

“Chris Rainey comes out the back end a bunch,” Meyer said. “He came out for about a 70-yarder here. When he gets open, you can’t catch him.

“He’s 175-plus (pounds) or 176, 177 and he’s holding the ball (and doing) all the things we couldn’t let him play last year (for) he’s really improved.”

They're already sturggling to get James involved, I wonder what happens now?
You know, I'd be happy if we could just get Rainey a few screen passes and a couple of slants each game.

Agreed, with the speed and ability to make people miss that Harvin, Rainey, James, etc... all have you would think we'd see more of that.

When Urban Meyer threw down his speed challenge a few weeks ago, he probably never envisioned that one of the Florida students racing his fastest players might turn out to be a 37-year-old senior who also works as a full-time accountant for a Gainesville engineering firm.

But, then Gary Bryant didn't see this coming either.

"I wasn't going to come out," said Bryant, 37, an Eastside graduate who is one semester shy of receiving his UF degree in business all these years later. "My girlfriend and my friends pushed me to do this. I just came out here to give it a shot and see how it went."

It went well. Very well.

Bryant was timed in 4.53 seconds in the 40-yard dash, tying him for the second-lowest time among 75 students who participated in the first round of qualifying on the Florida football practice field.

If his time holds up through another round of qualifying next week and he runs a similar time in the finals, Bryant could be one of five students earning the right to race UF's fastest players — tailback Chris Rainey and wide receivers Louis Murphy and Deonte Thompson — before the April 12 Orange and Blue Debut in The Swamp.

Yeah I agree! I think the defense will be much improved in alot of areas. Urban Meyer also said that yesterdays practice was the best he has seen in two years. Weight training, Film, and practice have not hurt either. I am really excited about this year and our RB position. I have not seen any of the practices, But i have heard alot of people going crazy over Chris Rainey. Meyer also said he may be the fastest player on the team and the race between him and Noel Devine is very well documented (Rainey beat Devine is a race).

Percy's Injury Looking Serious

Sophomore receiver Percy Harvin's heel injury could be more significant than first thought, UF coach Urban Meyer said after Monday's practice.

Harvin has been sidelined for much of the spring after he re-aggravated a heel injury that Meyer said has been bothering him since high school. While Meyer said the injury should not be an issue this fall, he is unsure of the treatment Harvin will need to go through until then.

“It's a heel injury and it's gone up into his knee,” Meyer said. “We had a specialist from North Carolina and two guys, a foot specialist from here, and also (head team physician) Dr. Pete (Indelicato). We're coming up with a plan and should have it in the next couple days.”

Harvin was bothered last season by what was thought to be tendonitis in his heel that spread to his knee. Meyer said the injury is not tendonitis, but is a bone issue that could be much more severe.

Meyer called Rainey, who now weighs about 176 pounds, one of the top five playmakers on the team and that usually means Florida is going to find ways to get him the ball.

Rainey has been superb at times during spring practice whether running the ball or catching it in the flat and making people miss.

"You can expect to see (Rainey) playing a little outside as well," Meyer said. "He's up in the top five playmakers on the team and you know our history, if you're a top five playmaker you touch the ball a bunch. He's one of those guys.

I know their defense will be much better but how about their run game (not Tebow :P) and WR's? I know you got Harvin but losing Caldwell was pretty big. If Harvin can't stay healthy who jumps in and starts?

Run game is looking pretty good right now. We have a few guys that are going to split carries, But Urban has always seemed to do that.

WR is Great! I don't think losing Caldwell is going to hurt that much if at all. Harvin will be ready by the Fall even if he has surgery. Riley Cooper and Deonte Thompson look to the front runners behind the guys that played last year. Also expect RB Chris Rainey to play alittle WR so they can get him the ball out in space where he is dangerous.
