I admit it: I am a fair-weather Canes fan. Because of this, I have no idea how the ACC Champion is crowned.

If Miami wins out and VA Tech wins out, will they play in the ACC Championship Game, or are they in the same Division? How does this work?

    Thanks.

    ATLANTIC Division

    4. Clemson
    5. North Carolina State
    6. Florida State

    3. Georgia Tech #22
    4. Miami (FL) #11

We can't play VT again, Atlantic Division will have to play Coastal Division for the Conference Championship. Above are the teams as they are currently ranked in the ACC by Division.

If GT beats VT and everyone wins out the rest of the way we still can play in the ACC championship game though.

That isn't the only way or probably even the most likely way, but it is possible.

Basically VT has to lose two ACC games with Miami winning out for the Canes to make it to the ACC championship game. However, the Canes can still go to a BCS bowl with an at large bid if they can make it into about the top 8.

In order to determine the Conference's representative to the Bowl Championship Series (BCS), the procedures listed below will be followed. All references to rankings refer to the final BCS standings released on `Selection Sunday' after all regular season games and conference championship games are completed.

    Two-Team Tie

    1. Head-to-head competition between the two tied teams

    2. Records of the tied teams within the division.

    3. Head-to-head competition versus the team within the division with the best overall record.(divisional) Conference record and proceeding though the division. Multiple ties within the division broken from first to last.

    4. Overall record versus all common non-divisional opponents.

    5. Combined record vs. all non-divisional teams.

    6. Record versus common non-divisional teams based on their order of finish (divisional and non-divisional) and proceeding through other common non-divisional teams based on their order of finish within their division.

    7. The tied team with the highest ranking in the Bowl Championship Series Standings following the end of regular season games shall be the divisional representative in the ACC Championship Game.

    8. The representative shall be chosen by a draw.

    Three (or More) Team Tie
(Once tie has been reduced to two teams, the two-team tiebreaker format is used)

    1. Combined head-to-head record among the tied teams

    2. Records of the tied teams within the division.

    3. Head-to-head competition vs. the team within the division with the best overall (divisional or conference) record, and proceeding through the division. Multiple ties within the division will be broken first to last.

    4. Overall record for non-divisional teams.

    5. Combined record versus all common non-divisional teams.

    6. Record versus common non-divisional with the best overall Conference (divisional) and non-divisional record and proceeding through the other common non-divisional teams based on their order of finish within the division.

    7. The tied team with the highest ranking in the Bowl Championship Series Standings following the conclusion of regular season games shall be the divisional representative in the ACC Championship Game, unless the second of the tied teams is ranked within five-or-fewer places of the highest ranked tied team. In this case, the head-to-head results of the top two ranked tied teams shall determine the representative in the ACC Championship Game.

    8. The representative shall be chosen by a draw.

I will give you one better.

it is very possible that Miami wins out...and gets help by their beaten opponents by them winning and helping our BCS number...that Miamai can leapfrog VT in the standings and NOT play in the ACC Championship game.

it is even conceiveable if alot of things happen that they can play in the National Championship game and NOT play in the ACC championship game.

    yeah...we need a playoff system.

There is a precedent, 2 years ago Georgia was the highest rated SEC team in the polls at the end of the regular season but was not in the SEC Championship game (LSU vs. Tennessee). They took the regular SEC champ BCS slot in the Sugar Bowl since LSU was in the NC game.

However, there would need to be some major shake ups to make it to the National Championship game without winning your conference, odds are slim and none IMO.

    Agreed, we need a playoff.

Unfortunately, the 3-4 best teams in the conference are in the same division. Really, though, all we can do is take care of our own business. If we do that odds are we'll still get into a BCS game and head into next season VERY highly ranked.

Gotta pray for some help, though. I'm eying @GT as a decent shot for a VT loss. Their next toughest games are UNC and BC, both at home.

And this is coming from a fan of a team that has won the BCS two of the last three seasons... that says it all.

Absolutely, let it play out on the field so there are no excuses of who should have got a shot and who didn't.

I have another question: what about overall record?

For example, if both teams finish with 1 ACC loss yet Miami is 11-1 overall and VT is 10-2 overall, does it still go by conference record where VT owns the head to head tie breaker?

I'm honestly not worried because I can see VT losing two ACC games easily.

Yes, conference record is what counts.

Doubtful, who do you think can beat them? They are showing again today that they are clearly the team to beat in the ACC.

Motion...DUKE almost beat them. Today is just a case of BC not being a very good team at all this season.

GT can beat them, and I think another team can upset them. BC was just completely outcoached today. VT had receivers running wide open and there was no pass rush. It was more what BC didnt do than what VT did.

Classic case of overlooking Duke. GT is overrated IMO. Looking at their remaining schedule I'd say the odds of two losses are pretty slim. JMO.

GT is overrated. That doesn't mean that they can't win the game though. I think someone will upset them by dominating the line of scrimmage and forcing Taylor to make decisions.

I'm not saying they WILL lose two games, but I think they could.
