Last year we all know it was the wildcat. Going into the season everyone knew that the Patriots would be the biggest challenge to Miami for the #1 in the AFC East. So has the Miami coaching staff kept a card in their sleeve for this game? Your thoughts. Anything new for this game? If so what? My stupid guess: The only thing that I think they could pull out is Pat White. Maybe the WildPat, maybe just him actually making some throws out of more conventional sets, maybe some screen passes to him out wide in the Wildcat (where Henne would line up normally).. just guessing.
If we use Pat White against the Patriots, I'm going to be scared as hell, that's a huge gamble. I think we've got something for them. But I think we're not going to use it unless we're able to get some production from our base offense/wildcat. I am positive we've got a wrinkle for the Patriots again this year, but I don't see us throwing it out there in this game, up in their weather, in their stadium, unless we've already got the dagger in there and are ready to twist it. I'm sure there will be different looks, etc. But like I said before, only if the opportunity arises. If not, it's going to get used when we see them in a few weeks back home.
I just have a funny feeling that Tyler Thigpen might be part of something this week. Just have a sense..see if he is our #2 QB this week
I am sure they have a bunch of wrinkles they haven't shown anyone yet. Whether they show it or not probably has a lot to do with what the defense shows them. I have a feeling they might try and do the same thing that both the Saints and Jets (this past week) did. Which was basically stack 8 or 9 in the box and force the Dolphins to throw it. The Saints pretty much did the same thing. They blitzed the corners on WC plays, and just took their 2 safeties and moved them up on the WR's. If the Pats end up doing something like this where they are basically stacking 8/9 in the box on WC plays, the Dolphins will be forced to throw it. So the whole Pat White idea might not be that far of a stretch, although I do agree it seems a bit risky.
That is a good point, NYPF. When Tony was asked recently about how he saw Pat White's involvement in the offense prior to the season, he agreed that he saw Pat White doing more than he currently is. The problem that Tony brought up was that Pat is now our 2nd QB, and its a more of a risk to play him. So Tyler Thigpen can also be a possibility imo. At this point I feel like anything goes, it being a big time division game, and just a much needed win in general.
Risky for sure, Im not a fan of White yet.. He looks scared as hell. Though they have been showcasing him quite often once a game for some reason. I think this is the game they NEED to pull out all the stops and WIN. That will give us 4 Wins against Division Rivals and easily a leg up on them all for the playoff hunt. I cant tell you how mad I am that we lost 2 games we were supposed to win due to some stupid BS.. Imagine us 5-4 s the Pats 5-4 AFC east on the line.... That sounds so much better than 5-4 vs 3-4... Also the problem is New England has had 2 WEEKS to prepare and rest for us. Somthing that is a bad omen for teams.. I forget the stat but By week teams are like 72% of something winners in the next game.
imo theres really not anymore wrinkles in the wc.we have done just about everything you can do in the wc..direct snaps up the middle,hand-offs to motion guys, fake reverses,flea-flicker type passes, option style plays and so on.theres alot of tape out there of how we run it among how other teams try to run it and the worst part is theres a good bit of tape on how to shut it down now in which n.e has had since last yr to study up..not just 2 weeks of this season. sure we will see the wildcat but unless we find another way besides running and passing,we don't see "new" wrinkles.
I don't believe we've seen Henne throw it out of the Wildcat yet... that would be my guess. I would also expect a couple of plays from Pat White that we haven't seen yet... and maybe Kory Sheets out of the "standard" WC set... or sprinkle in Teddy Ginn next to Ronnie and White... White takes the snap after Ginn goes in motion (hopefully singled up on a safety or a lbacker), fake it to Ronnie underneath, move White out of the pocket and hit Ginn deep down the sidelines. Of course, the line needs to block it... and that can be a huge IF!
I like the idea of Thigpen. I hope we have something for them. I agree with Dorfdad we have to pull out all the stops. Tom Brady and that receiving core going up against 3 rookies in the secondary at times.. Going to be rough. They young guys have plenty of talent but the Pats are a sharp team in their passing attack. Any mistake will be punished by Brady and company. Can't wait for this game. Going to be very interesting to watch.
We need someone, maybe Vontae to cover Wes welker on all third downs, just blanket cover him. Thats what keeps the pats offense going. Easier said than done but his 3-4 yard slant plays keeps their offense moving on third downs. Shut that down and you can shut the pats offense down, or at least force them to punt more often than not. As for offense, Green is out this week, so that helps. A new wrinkle i'm sure could just be more screens that we have typically run this year and have a couple of our WR run short inside slants themselves. Thats what Cammarillo, Bess, hartline are suited for, hit them in stride, increase that YAC. Set up short second and third downs from the passing game. The only one i remember seeing was the inside 5-7 yard slant to hartline vs NO, which ended up going for mega yards because henne hit him in stride. For the strengths of our wideouts and the glaring problem we need our QB to get rid of the ball sooner as he learns, to counter blitzes, i still don't understand why we don't use this more often as a regular part of our offense. I don't see much pat white, mabye a hand off to Ricky sweeping to the right and a reverse to Ted Ginn back the other way. That could work but it might not, the pats d and linebackers have a tendancy to be disciplined. But it may work to keep them off balance. Also if Merriweather is getting to aggressive creeping into the box i could see after about 10 rushes or so doing a flea flicker and looking for Ginn deep after the safety committs to the run. Everyone is aware of our Wildcat as our misdirection play, but if we sprung a flea flicker on them thinking were a heavy run team it might catch their DB's out of position as no one would really be expecting our Phins to do something like that.
I want to beat them so bad. I thought I didn't have any division hate left after playing the jets twice in 20 days, but oh I do now.
maybe a Ginn reverse sweep ... or something like that, but otherwise - don't see many new wrinkles. what we need is better execution from the OL. the PATSIES aren't as 'quick' as NO or the JESTS, so that should help the WC a bit. if the WC gets shut down again, the offense might be in for another long day. WC needs to have some success. to me if the PATSIES are successful in stopping the WC, then they will also be successful in putting pressure on Henne ... the 2 are tied together with the OL. the D needs to play for more than a half .... our front 7 run out of gas after the 1st X 30 minutes and we just can't reach the QB in the 2d half (minus Starks on that last drive last weekend).
Yeah, I'm pretty sure there will be something that has been held out especially for the Patsies. Maybe some no huddle. Definitely some wrinkles in the Wildcat. And a trick play or two would be my guess. And, I think you'll see a different look/scheme on the defensive side too, 'cause we gotta get pressure on Brady to have a chance IMHO. More Wake would make sense. And, just more (and different) blitz packages than we've shown so far. Go Phins!
i had not caught that but, what else should he say when asked that question? no they've seen everything we have? it would be sweet if they showed something completely different, but the quote by ronnie to me is more getting them to spend extra time trying to figure out what they could do rather than what they can do.again i don't think theres new formations they can show from it as much as just having different guys running them, whether it's ricky in motion or ginn it's still a guy in motion.
All I want to see is a wrinkle in the defense where all they do is blitz to pressure Brady otherwise it'll be a long day.
Totally disagree. For one thing they could line up Ronnie and go spread using 2 TE's to load one side with them being possible run blockers or Wr's. The possibilities have limits but there are many legal formations that can be done, and many different plays can be run from just one formation.
I envision the QB lining up wide, checking out the coverage. Then darting across the field getting the direct snap (imagine Henne, White, Thigpen in motion across the line), causing matchup problems andforcing the Pats to play on their heels instead of attacking. I even envision a few runs for White out of this.
The Patriots have won their last 8 games coming off a bye week.. However, 4 of their last 5 games after a BYE were against the Buffalo Bills. The Bills haven't been all that good lately.. The Patriots have owned the Bills whether it was coming off a bye week or not (the Bills have lost 9 in a row against the Pats, with 4 of those losses after a NE bye week). So that's some food for thought. And on another note-- there is no team in the division that has played the Patriots better than the Dolphins.. Miami is 8-10 against the patriots in the decade.. And Miami has beaten the Pats in 4 of the last 5 seasons (the only time the Pats have swept the Dolphins over the last 5 years was during Miami's miserable 1-15 season in 2007).
How about we have Ricky and Ronnie pound the ball first? See how that works before going WildCat or WildPat.
I think the wrinkle should be for Ronnie and Ricky to run the ball at Junior Seau's 40 year old *** on every play.
I agree and I think Pat White will be that wrinke, and I expect it to shock the Pats. I honestly look forward to seeing S Smith on R Moss, we drafted this kid with one primary goal Stop Randy Moss.... Ask any Bear fan or Viking Fan how good Charles Tillman played against Randy Moss shut him down to the point where he would stop playing. Smith can be this guy for us. This is an important game, and I think Miami makes a huge statement. You know that same statement we made when we should've beaten the to best teams in the League! I am pumped for the big upset in Foxboro!
Sean Smith is probably tall as Randy Moss. That'll be a good match with a nice blitzer you have in the D.
That is the beauty of this game. I assume we drafted these corners with the pats in mind. Gonna be great
Boy i still get scared everytime i see Pat White step on the field. He just looks like a deer in the headlights still to me.
I heard that too.......and it still make me cringe. I kind of understood the pick at the time, didn't agree with it but I could see the thinking behind it. We needed a play maker.....as time goes on and I see how we use him and Sparano's continued insistence on doing nothing else with him but using him at QB? That pick looks TERRIBLE..........
