When the Dolphins drafted this 6'3" 230lb linebacker, my first thought was... what? He's too small to be a PArcells linebacker and too big too be a safety. Then it hit me: he is the perfect hybrid to play against the spread offense the Patriots run. Folsom was drafted to become a player who could run with fast tight ends out of the spread offense. Instead of yeremiah Bell covering Ben Watson the entire time this Sunday, don;t be surprised if the newly activated Folsom sees playing time and is matched against the PAts tight end. The Dolphins have been killed by Tight Ends this season. Our Safeties are too small and too deep to cover receiving tight ends like Gonzalez, Clark, Gates, Keller and Watson. Our Linebackers are too slow and lack ball skills. Folsom is right in between. Where Yeremiah bell is only 6'0" 200lbs, Folsom is 3 inches taller and 30 pounds bigger, while being faster than our other linebackers. I don't know if Folsom will have enough pracice time to see significant time this week, but I do expect to see him in there a few times when we defend the Pats spread. Especially if Watson is on the field and Bell has not been able to stop him. Our staff plans ahead and maybe now we will get to see what this front office had in mind when it drafted J.D. Folsom in the seventh round.
I was just wondering what was going on with him. I thought he had a good head in some preseason action. I said a silent wish that he would be the next Zach Thomas for us.
How has he been on ST's, anyone know? A couple new faces and some spirited play garnered some excitment last week............to say the least.
Worth a shot, to me the ST unit played so well last week that I'm not thrilled with the change to Folsom.
Who knows, maybe they had this game circled when they drafted the kid? We are talking about Bill Parcells after all, so anything is possible. I'm just eager to see the kid play. Didn't he do pretty well in the preseason?
I was wondering about him last week when Channing got hurt. I wonder who we cut to promote him from the PS.
I just remember the goofy waterboy-esque interception return for a touchdown in the preseason (Saints?).
i think what we are really looking at is another Izzo ... ST maven, that hopefully can come in and be a part of our nickel to cover TEs ... we don't have any other option ... and if he can do that successfully, that alone would validate his draft selection .... hoping for another ZT is just way too much to even hope for ....
I will be happy if he contributes on STs. I seriously doubt he will get much playing time, if any. Bell is smaller, but he's a good tackler and hits like a LB. I dunno about straight line speed, but I'm sure Bell is quicker in small spaces the JD. But hey, I hope he becomes the greatest LB of all time. For us atleast
