do we need him? let me explain.....hes a good young qb....could be a real good qb....put the right parts around him, and he can do very well imo. hes young, good feet, and a good arm.

any chance we trade him this offseason? we have pat white....and hes one of "our guys" that the FO drafted. what do we trade him for? well we would need to trade him to a team needing a QB obviously.

ricky is old....and hes done after next year, ronnie is in the last year of his contract....besides hes always split carries......here is something iam just throwing against the wall....

who needs a qb and could offer a good RB in a trade?

carolina. jonathan stewart......for tyler thigpen and a pick from us.

who would bite on this? they need a young good qb, give him steve smith, a good defense, deangelo williams....a good o-line, and he could do great things imo.

we get a running back whos young and a bruiser like stewart.....that would be beautiful.

also thigpen played at coastal carolina college....so there would be some big time fans of his @ the panthers. its a cool situation.....i thought about it scanning through the panther boards and them thinking they needed to trade stewart to get a good young QB.

    whats your thoughts on this?

If your asking me we keep him and get ride of Pat White.. I know that will look horrible and it is a mistake if you ask me hes way to small (thickness) to take the NFL hits a QB takes. Hes a gimmick player IMHO.

Tyler is a FAST, SMART and tough player he survived and did WELL in Kansas City where there is no talent. I say we use him as the #2..

Everyone will disagree that doesn't make me wrong though... Pat White should have not be drafted.. He should have been traded (his pick) for a real wideout..

I could see it, but do you really trust Pat White to come in and play for Chad Henne right now? Next season?

I don't trust Pat White's arm right now, personally. If Henne goes down, odds are our season will be toast anyways (next season or this one). But that chance is somewhat lessened with Thigpen than with White, at least in my eyes.

It's an interesting proposition but it's not like we payed much to get Thig in a trade. He actually came to us pretty reasonably if I recall. So I don't know that we can get anything huge for him, I mean if KC could have they would have.

    Dorfdad,
I TOTALLY agree. We could of spent that pick on a WR, this was a good year for WR's. I loved White at WVU, but if we are to take the 'next step' it has to be with Henne at the helm 100% of the time. I have no problem with Brown running the Wildcat a few times a game, but White is an added dimension we do not need and frankly is not working out. Another WR or even LB would have been better.
Tough to play Monday morning QB to our FO though, it has been a great 1.5 years so far.

    Live from the Internet.
I don't see it happening Chris.

    a) Pat White is nowhere ready to be a "real" Qb.
    b) Henne gets hurt...Pat White steps in.
We wouldn't have anybody else if Pat got hurt.

very reasonable, but i fully expect both RB & RW back next year ...

Thigpen is a good chip to have though ..... we could keep him, could trade him ... but it's nice to have those options available come the offseason.

When you draft someone like Jonathan Stewart and it pays off, you don't trade him after 2 years for a 2nd/3rd string QB. Even if we throw in a pick, it's a dumb move for them. Having two great backs it the only good thing they have going for them (much like us). They always have fresh legs throughout the game. It's not worth trading that for a guy like Thigpen.

What we need to do is re-sign Ronnie to keep the tandem intact for another year. Then we make a play for a big WR who makes things happen.

We also have immediate needs at safety, ILB, OLB to worry about.

Ricky may be 30+ years old; but he has the legs of a 28 year old.

Ya gotta wonder if we could have traded the Pat White and Pat Turner picks to get Boldin. Hindsight says we should have (it they would have accepted it). But it's still early.

I think the chances of us landing Jonathan Stewart are at about 0.01 %, bro. Maybe they'll give us Brad Hoover, lol.

Thigpen is a young QB that can be a great backup for Henne... Pat White should improve with the WC... but, he has a lot of work to do making some throws, meanwhile Tyler is our second option.

Ain't no chance in hell anytime soon Tyler Thigpen makes up any significant portion of a trade, especially for a recent high 1st round pick.

I think that quote isn't looking at everything. Thigpen played in a spread offense basically and his reads were different. He was basically told, hit the first open WR you see and they had guys running crossing routes, etc. IIRC, Bowe was the deep threat really and that's it. Tony Gonzalez and a few others worked the underneath and the seams. Thigpen's talented but he can get erratic with his accuracy. I like him but I don't see him being a major player in a large deal to bring over a quality player. However, I've been wrong before.

Agree, unfortunately for us. But then again, that's why we were able to acquire him fairly inexpensively.

Thigpen is all potential right now; we'd have to showcase him in the exhibition season next year, assuming he's improved enough by then to impress.

yes i read the news. i know ricky's contract status. what's more important? getting a WR to play NOW, or preparing for something that hasnt happened yet? not to mention that leaves us with a huge hole at QB. If Henne gets hurt, are you ok with Pat White being our only viable QB?

Sick, but I think this is totally crazy.

There is no way Carolina would get rid of a stud young RB like Stewart for a developmental QB.

If Carolina wanted him they could have offered the Chiefs a 4th rounder and stole him from us. Plus since the trade he certainly has not done anything to increase any value he had.

Carolina had their shot to buy low on him, and they passed.

    no i already said that.

soooo thigpen isnt good enough to be a big piece of a trade......but he is good enough to be our starter if henne went down?

i am literally just asking.....i brought this up for discussion, and think past the for stewart deal only.....can we dangle and use/and will we use....thigpen for a trade this offseason?

Because his value as considered by the league as a whole has been pretty clearly articulated.

He was up for trade essentially the entire last off-season. The best offer, prior to the Dolphins, was a 5th round pick, from the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Dolphins compensation for Thigpen still seemingly has not been disclosed, but it's pretty clear they didn't pay anything significant for him.

Tyler Thigpen has not, in the meantime, done anything to increase his value. In fact, given that he will probably spend the entire season inactive and on the bench, his value will be lessened, barring some spectacular play next preseason.

The math simply does not add up to Thigpen being anything other than a cherry on the top of a more significant trade.

I could definately see Pat White starting at some point next season. Maybe even this season if Henne stinks it up royally and we are out of playoff contention.

I saw White play all 4 years in college. He can throw. How many NFL passes has he attempted? 3? Dude can throw it 70 yards in the air. And most importantly, he's a born winner.

Honestly, I do not see what all the praise for Henne has been about. He looks terrible out there, imo. He was throwing at every WRs shoes against NE for cryin' out loud! What is it you all see in him that looks so great?

I would give Tyler Thigpen and Ted Ginn for J Stewart. I doubt Carolina would though. If they had interest in Thigpen they probably would have pursued him when he was on the trading block. They also love Stewart. It would probably take a #1 or a player/#2+ combo to get the Panthers to trade him. And if it costs that much I'll pass. I'd rather draft our own if it costs that much.

I wasn't thrilled about acquiring Thigpen when the deal was announced. But, now that we have him, I say we hold on to him and develop him. If nothing else, he is (hopefully) a good insurance policy in the event that Henne should go down (God forbid).

As for White, I was even less thrilled about drafting him. But here again, since we have him, and since he was drafted (presumably) to help take the Wildcat to the next level, develop him, and use his strengths to help make our offense (hopefully) more diverse and more explosive.

As for Henne, and with all due respect CashInFist, I totally disagree with your assessment. Is he making perfect throws, every throw? No. In fact, the throws I see him missing most are the ones that require touch. But, all in all, I really like what I see. And, I'm real excited about his potential in this league. I think he could be the answer this franchise has been looking for to fill the void at QB since Marino retired. He just needs time, protection and weapons to be successful IMO.

The way I see it, Henne is your guy for now and long term. Let White and Thigpen fight it out for who's #2 and #3 on the depth chart. Bring back Penny as a coach next year (if he'll accept) so he can continue to work with and mentor these guys.

As for concerns at RB, sign Ronnie long term, and look to draft (for depth) in 2011 (after Ricky retires). We still have Cobbs and Hilliard, so I am not that worried about long term concerns at the position.

    JMHO...

Sorry man, I totally disagree with you. Everything we've heard of in practice, in pre-season, and in the games he's thrown in is that he's been throwing passes way off target.

And Henne has been looking awful? Seriously? I mean granted he's no all star right now, but he's doing pretty good for his first year start, and with a better receiving corps he'd be showing it off a lot better. How many passes has he gotten to receivers, in tight spots, only to have them drop?

As for throwing at WRs feet against NE, I remember at least two of those, and those were occasions where he was still in the pocket, and throwing it away because of coverage and getting pressure. He's been pretty accurate on the majority of his passes.

Aside from taking a sack too often (which he clearly was working on in the NE game, by the throwing away I mentioned earlier), he's been playing a pretty strong game. It's kind of hard to see that due to the WR play, I'll admit that, but Pat White has not shown us any reason he would be better. The only good play he has had all year, and pre-season is the quick dash up the middle he had against NE.

Just because he was a winner in college doesn't mean it's going to translate here. And until he shows he can play QB in the NFL, I personally am not confident in his skills. There's a reason Dan Henning doesn't call pass plays with him more often when he's on the field. We see that reason every time he DOES go for one.

Carolina would be asnolutely foolish to make that trade, its better if we draft Ricky's replacement after his contract is up.
