Whew! I remember Grafenwoehr too....a LOT of time there and Hohenfels....those were the 2 major training stations...I still have maps of both.....When they first came out with the HummVees, I was there and when they first got there we were among the first to drive them, in the mock wars....Spent 90 percent of my time at one or the other of those...no wonder I got divorced after Germany....always in the field.

Wow, We have all chewed some of the same dirt...

Tell you a funny story...with the humvees....my platoon this one time were the ones refereeing a big operation at Hohenfels with the god guns and Miles gear, we were bat 1, bat 2 etc and batman was the E7 over us...We heard a call over the radio from bat 7 that they were stuck. Batman said no way, you can't get humvees stuck so bat 7 gave their coordinates and we all headed over and no sight, scanned the whole area and nothing, but they swore they were there...Batman told one of them to get out of the vehicle and wave his hands...and sure enough he did....we were looking out there and here comes bat 7 up out of the ground like....we got over there and they had dropped that humvee off in a pit...haha..had to get a dozer to pull it out...

That cold over there was a monster too...I remember many days as TC in my track and it was way down there cold wise an with half my torso out of the hatch and snow and wind blowing, even the cold weather gear was not enough..scarf around lower half of face and snot in my nose freezing before it goe halfway down my nostrils...boy some tough times but they were still some of the best...

You guys go to PLDC over there? Baumholder?

I participated in Reforger... Man what a game! As I said, I was on the 8 inch in Germany and started out as a e-4 and driving those big arse things... Driving through those little towns with streets barely wide enough to accept the width of the vehicle and having to worry about the tube not hitting any buildings was a challenge!

Damn fine memories though... I remember the town kids bringing us stuff in the evening once we set up our position. Beer, candies, pasteries, wine... Great memories about Reforger bro!!!

Great story bro! I love hearing about that kinda stuff... And speaking of stories, we would go to Graf every 6 weeks between October and March... Being a combat mos, we stayed in tents while at the rear in Graf. We would spend 4-5 days in the hills training at a time. During that time we would try to set up a tent and use a BOX stove to heat it. But being artillery, we had to "SHOOT, MOVE and COMMUNICATE" so sleeping arrangements were the least of the worries...

The COLD was a BIATCH!!! There was a place that we would frequent called HAWK HILL. And we would set our guns there and do fire missions. Now for those that don't know, GRAF is in the German Alps. And sitting on top of a mountain, with the wind blowing 45-50 miles per hour when the tempature outside is -10 to -15F without windchill, while sitting on 32 tons of steel, it gets COLD!!!

OH YEAH!>..wonderful times...we'd toss mre's to the kids as we went by and stop and get some broachen and brats, and went we stopped, the kids would bring us all kinds of stuff and trade and it was great....after days out there the best thing one ever brought to me was a coke...warm, but a coke..man did that taste good. Many days and nights on end with little to no sleep, always moving, meeting other nations militaries...it was awesome...I was with 4/29 FA as FO and supported 1/13 infantry. Miracle man, our lt, was crazy as they come....Speed was his game...we rode in those tracked APC's, and remember one time full tilt down not much more than a trail in the woods out into this field where there was acres of corn planted, and we came around the corner and it was OH SH*T!, there must have been 30 abrams coming our way, hell they did not even have time to turn their turrets our way, without missing a beat just as fast as we rounded that corner of corn our driver it the left stick and we spun around and went back aroundd the corner and back in the woods, as fast as we came out, without missing a beat.

But that was a great time....wow! I miss it. we never got killed tho...MM never slowed down or stayed put long enough.

The worst part of reforger was the trip back on the train....our trains had no priority and they put us off on a siding somewhere for 48 hours, and we just sat there, before they hooked up and pulled us on home.

I'll tell you an embarrassing story, but don't laugh, One place we stopped, and kids swarmed over us to trade for things, so I traded a canteen with one kid for a coke and a can of what I thought was spam like, it was german so could not really read it..asked the kid if it was canned ham or something, he shook his head yes..it was about the size of a tuna can...well use my john wayne to open it and did not smell good and ate a couple bites and a buddy came over that knew the language pretty well and asked me why I was eating dog food...:pointlol::pointlol::pointlol: I almost died.....

But yes those roads were narrow...had to decontaminate one time and they left 1 lt in charge of the small contingent to be decon'd...and his nick name fit well...the Lost One...after deconning we were to head out and meet up with the main body about 6 clicks away..So Lt Quinones, asked me if i would lead, as he did not know where we were, and being an FO, maps were my job...so I said yes, now mind you we had m60 tanks and abrams and other tracked vehicles with us and I had to lead the way for all of them from where we were to a point 6 clicks away...and tht was hairy, at nite. some of those streets I still to this day don't know how those tanks got thru them as narrow as they were...but we got there.

But remember what the main word at reforger was? manuever damage....those farmers loved to see us coming....haha..t

Oh man you ain't kidding....arty, tanks, apc's all cold steel..hard to sleep or be comfortable, but like you said, sleep really wasn't a big worry. always on the go...but when we did sleep, I had learned in the Corps, to sleep naked in the sleeping bag, no matter the temp outside, with my clothes inside under me...kept nice and warm that way.

Another funny story...me and a buddy once set up our shelter halves one nite and woke up for guard duty. well we came back colder than a witch's tit about 3 am....so we thought we'd be smart and lit a can of sterno in the tent to warm it up...only prob we both fell asleep and one rolled over knocked that sterno over and set it all on fire...needless to say we weren't very cold then...haha....t

I participated in 2 REFORGER exercises as a field Special Agent.

Fun story, when I arrived in Frankfurt, I was told that there were two openings for CID agents in Germany - one in Stuttgart and one in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. I had never heard of Garmisch so I choose Stuttgart. If only I had known :)

Served in the USMC from 1982 to 1993. Got out as a sergeant. Was in supply, 3051, and 3072. Supported the ground and airwing. Started out at beautiful MCRD San Diego. Then went to 29 Stumps for a short stay, then to Camp Pendleton. From there to Okinawa, Japan. Back to Camp Pendleton, then to El Toro, Ca. Back to Pendleton again, then to Saudia Arabia, then to Pendleton, and I was done. The best thing about the service, is I had a great time with some awesome people right out of high school.:wink2:

Does the German army count? Well, considering that I spend my days throwing christmas trees on my commanding officer's head and drinking Humphrey Bogart-amounts of booze, it probably doesn't. Then again, it wasn't like I had a choice. I just wouldn't call it serving. I usually got served ...

I can imagine. I didn't think I'd run into any 98s around here. I'm sure things have changed some in the field though between then and now. I've always wanted to go to KRSOC but I don't have the right language.
