so i excitedly popped in my brand new Star Trek bluray and.........nothing

the PS3 is not reading that there is a disc in there. i put a bunch of different discs in there with the same result

i did a bunch of resets, including a complete system restore (that took about 3 hours) and nothing

has anyone had this happen to them or know any fixes?

im way past warranty. i have one of the original 40GB systems that cost $599. needless to say im pretty pissed right now lol. id say that i have below average usage on the thing. i dont leave it on or stuff like that

Although the PS3 doesn't get the press that the 360 does in terms of systems breaking (rightfully so, the 360 is a piece of **** with great games unfortunately) but I've heard of it. Probably the laser is dead as I hear that's common for PS3's that don't read disks.

Unfortunately you're probably going to have to send it in to Sony for about $150.

after some more searching i have seen that same 150 number pop up. some say they have gotten refurbs for free.

im not sure ill fork it over without a big fight on the phone. this isnt some Sanyo DVD player that would surprise me if it broke.

ive done pretty much every reset i could think of and had the PS3 fix corrupted files

ill pick up a lens cleaner tomorrow and try that. if that doesnt work, a sony rep is getting an earful

i think gamers have a reasonable expectation that a system of that cost will function for years and years and should be fixed by them

Well I think I can help.

I had my PS3 quit reading discs (Blu-Rays only actually) and I had to replace the laser. It takes some work but if Sony wants to charge you $150 you can do this for $70 (you could fix it twice for what Sony wants and sometimes Sony gives you a new system and not your old one plus you will have to backup all your info. before sending it in so it gives its own problems).

Its pretty simple and I can give you all the links I used.

Can you tell me what model PS3 you have and is it not reading any discs? If so I have some tips for you to try so we can troubleshoot this and get this fixed.

It may even be best we chat on aim or something so we don't clutter the board.

i really dont want to give them my $150. Id rather spend the same and not give them the money lol. thats how annoyed I am. for $70, you sold me

    lets do it!

the number i gave them is CECHH01
