I dunno, living here in Cincinnati I've seen most of the Bengals games - I'm not so sure that defense is what it seems sometimes. I'll admit, Jonathan Joseph and Leon Hall might be the best CB duo in the NFL that no one knows about, but their pass-rush wasn't that good. Antwan Odom recorded 5 sacks in week 2 vs. Darryn Colledge - normally the Packers LG, playing LT for the injured Chad Clifton, but they certainly didn't get the the opposing QB much after that. Maualuga, Jones, and Rivers are pretty solid, but none of them, at this point in time as I think Maualuga will flourish in that system, gives you anything noticeably more than Crowder. Their run D was solid, but I'd argue that ours was just as good until Ferguson got injured.

    Wake was situational last season
you dont know if he can play de full time in the nfl
Langford and Starks would have to be DT's
    Merling hasnt proven anything
you are way ahead of yourself again padre

nothing situational about Wake. he can play either way
just my opinion, but don't see us changing from the 3/4
look around, the new direction is going to the 3/4 not 4/3

Only one way to find out what Wake can and cannot do, but we still have that JT cat hanging around somewhere on the golf course..

Yep, Langford played DT at Hampton, Starks DT in TN.

True, but it would also get him on the field more.

Look at it this way, the 4man Dline would put our most talented defenders on the field for the most plays, Starks, Wake, Merling, sort of the thinking behind the WC.

    Like that is something new...

Way I see it, if we continue to run the 3-4, this draft will be devoted just to adding players to man the thing, and "we have to wait 3yrs to.." comes into effect, the 4-3, we know pretty much what we have and where they would fit.

We could take a Dez Bryant at #12 if we ran the 4-3, if we go 3-4 we may end up taking a NT at #12...yay!

I totally disagree, respectfully of course, the guy is way too conservative, if anything he takes away from Henne's progress......Time and time again all you saw were questionable offensive playcalling, the whole way to conservative....where was the shotgun?? where was the hurry up offense? where was throwing ocassionaly on 1st?? why when they were moving the ball and Henne was getting a rythmn, did he resort to the wildcat with just Ricky running it: instead of letting Henne throw from the base offense in shotgun?? Ricky throwing it in Buffalo for an interception, when he was avgeraging 5 plus yards on that opening drive was another "genius" play....so many blunders, running reserves once a game...

Bottom line is when the wildcat was installed, it had to be, there was something that needed to be done, whereas Pennington couldnt stretch the field with his lack of arm. Defenses were daring him to throw, nobody was scared of him, dint you notice that after Henne came in, and Ronnie went down, the Wildcat disappeared for the most part...They have that guy now, in a passing dominanted NFL to get those "chunk yards"...the cat is nice but not nearly as needed as it used to be, and if they get a number one stud, it will be all but a memory, and they should be moving towards more of a spread offense...why not? they would have the weapons at that point....no?

Wake was a situational player because he was inconsistent in pass coverage. If we played a 4-3 (not saying I want us to) he could easily play much more since we would never be asking him to drop in coverage. Unless we had a zone blitz on.

Yep, and JT would also have a role, and the Lb Corps would not need 3 or 4 players and 3 yrs to sort itself out.

Problem is that I flat out dont see a team that has Parcels anywhere near it going 4-3. I just dont. He tried it for a little while when in Dallas but after 2 years blew it up for the 3-4.

We'll see, these sort of firings can set off all manner of speculation, this is merely a part of that happening.

It does make sense, at least personnel wise, unless they calculate that they can find the 5-6 players we need for our 3-4 to make it work in 2010.

we seriously need 3 new Lb starters and a NT if we run the 3-4 this year.

Damn, that was pretty quick. I guess accountability goes along way with our new regime. Now the search for a new coordinator begins. Do we try to promote from within or get new blood in........

I got one just to have better access to information, not to tweet or anything like that, but players and writers and bloggers tweet before the write and they issue bulletins like DC P being fired a half hour before the paid media mentioned it.

Best news I've heard all season, easily. Good riddance Pasq and your incredibly frustrating vanilla scheme. Take your atrocious quarters coverage with you please.

I'm starting to wonder now just saw Zimmer's contract isn't up til March so why would we fire Pasq today if we were hiring Zimmer? Seems like they would have kept him around til after the Senior Bowl at the least unless there was some time sensitive thing going on with getting his replacement. The more I think about it the more it would seem like they want to get Crennel before he signs with KC.

The advantage of the 4-3 would be the flexibility on the defensive line in pass rush situations. You can attack in a number of ways in the 4-3 with the DL that you can't in a 3-4 (LBs are limited however). One of the strengths of the "vanilla" Bates scheme was that you could thrown your left end inside on pass downs to create pressure. In a 3-4 that's just not likely.

The Wildcat actually did not have alot to do with Henning. It was brought over by our QBs coach David Lee who had been the OC at Arkansas the year before where they ran the 'WildHog' with Darren McFadden and Felix Jones.

I don't know how our defense got better with the firing of Paul Pasquolini. IMO, he did a pretty good job last season. Run D was top 10, and our team was good at rushing the passer. The pass D was bad, but that's what happens with two rookie CBs and two starting SS.

Anywho, I hope we run the 4-3 as Padre mentions. We have the players to run it. And switching to it would instantly knock some needs of our list.

AdamCaplan mentioned that the Dolphins were making phone calls last week inquiring about Defensive Coordinators.

The writing was on the wall for DC Pasqualoni.

I don't think so. I defend coaches more than most but the fact is that this secondary showed no improvement whatsoever. It wasn't so much the talent that I'm talking about. Although that left something to be desired too. If Chris Clemons could be on the field for four plays in the final game, why could he not be on the field for the entire game? They did the handful of plays thing for the last three games. They simply showed him some action. In the meanwhile, the "starting" secondary continued to get toasted just as they had done ALL YEAR.

Paul Pasquoloni wasted a year playing man free coverage. Our secondary learned nothing and worse yet - we learned nothing about them. This is a zone team. We played no zone. It occured on Pasquoloni's watch.

Well this definitely adds excitement and room for improvement next season which is always exciting. I just hope the adjustment period isn't too great.

However I have to say my major fear about this team is the coordinators and I was afraid the regime wouldn't shake things up (we know how conservative they are). So I'm glad to see they did however I would have rather kept Pasqualoni and got rid of Henning first but honestly something had to be done about both.

Hopefully things improve and if Henning is kept that better talent helps him out like Mularkey in Atlanta.
