Though Danny Watkins doesn’t appear ready to unseat John Jerry at right guard, Philbin said Watkins “is picking the system up well. Seems like a bright guy. Been in the building a lot, getting extra help. I like the progress he’s making.” One major reason why seventh-round pick Don Jones, the former Arkansas State safety, made the Dolphins was his skills on special teams. According to Pro Football Focus, Jones graded out the best of any Dolphin on coverage teams last week, even though his most impressive tackle (for no gain on a punt return) was nullified by a teammate’s penalty. Philbin has been impressed. Read more here: http://miamiherald.typepad.com/spor...hins-hurricanes-quick-hits.html#storylink=cpy
The tight ends will continue to hurt is because Ellerbe is a liability in coverage, so get our freak up to speed and let him play against the position, if the opponent has a superior athlete at the position, which the browns do, and the colts do, then lets use our weapon against him.. I mean one on one, line Jordan up against Allen, if he blocks for the run, then let Dion play the run, if he pass blocks, let Dion rush the passer, if he goes out in route, then let Dion cover.. Spying Luck, and covering the tight end should be his two responsibilities in this game if I were Coyle.
Clay showed me more in the brown game then I have ever seen, He just might of turned a pivitol corner.
Clay made a lot of impressive plays last season -- but he's yet to show consistency. That's what we need from him this year.
I should of been more specific, when playing a Qb who can extend plays, the longer his coverage responsibility Is, the more ineffective technique he displays, basically he gets lost.We know Luck is elite in this trait, why have Ellerbe on the field in obvious passing situations.
I've thought of that and I believe the two things I would have him do would be less stressful on the shoulder than strait pass rushing..coverage and spy, both involve a lot of running.
He's been downgraded to doubtful Alex just posted... So lets play our game and have Dion protect the middle and spy Luck...protect the shoulder and use his skillset to the max.
I really don't have any pity, we lost a valuable weapon in Keller so imo were playing the season short handed, Allen will probably be back next week.. D-swarm.
Will say. When you get a good QB who can extend plays then most LBs will have problems. DBs will have problems keeping their coverage let alone LBs.
Most? I'm being totally conjective here. Ellerbe is not at this juncture known as an open space cover LB but he replaced a Raven LB legend when he went down and got awards in doing so by the Ravens fraternity in his LIMITED PLAYING time. Is Ellerbe expected to get a good reputation at covering as well as his already recognised tackling ability in so short a playing career?
This is they way I'm looking at this, we have a player coming off the bench in jordan with a unique skillset, a part of that skillset is to be able to drop, cover, chase and tackle, so I think which one of our starters is most susceptible to their coverage responsibilities breaking down when the Qb were facing breaks containment from the pocket?.. From what I have looked at from all these players, Ellerbe is the weakest link in that dept..I know Dion probably doesn't know the scheme as much as Dannell, but with Lucks greatness escaping the pocket, fu&$ the scheme, we need explosive athletes who can change their direction, and cover people as long as possible in the open field, we need the players on the field who shrink the fraction time upon arrival. Last year the reason why we lost the game is because every time Luck broke the pocket he won on the play, every freakin time, we need to win a percentage of those plays this week.
I'm not saying I'm unhappy with the acquisition, I'm trying to figure out what is our best matchup of combating the most critical part of this game.. Let me ask you this, if Dion is used as a spy, who do you think should come off the field.?
my 1st thought is that I would be generally worried if Jordan was used as a Spy considering he's a rookie with limited reps in pre season. Are we relying on Dion Jordan to spy on Luck and make the calls? I'm asking because I just don't think Jordan will be asked to do that right now. If Philbin puts him in that position and gives him that responsibility and it works then I will be impressed.
I'm willing to take the hit on mistakes as long as it involves getting him on the field, I think we need his athleticism and presence on the field for this matchup..I think Dion Jordan is a smart football player and can do anything that is asked of him, but I also believe he has an element of freestyle instincts that matches up well with what Luck does when he breaks the pocket.. Is it a risk what I'm askin him to do, most def, your jeopardizing the schemes integrity, but I think the matchup demands the risk and this is what I envisioned when I looked at Jordan coming out of college..this is exactly what I envisioned, none of that strait up def end stuff, I really think he can define a new position of Leo.
The colts were 13 out of 19 on third down in last years game. 6 of those third downs conversion were over ten yards. "The game-winning field goal by Adam Vinatieri in the fourth quarter came after the Colts converted a third-and-11 from their own 5-yard line." I did not see a better game by a Qb all of last year.. I'm not gonna sit back and think there's just no way he can duplicate it, because when it comes to breaking containment, he can do it all over again, I'm gonna change the dynamics, I'm gonna throw a wrench into the equation and he happens to be - 6'6 fast, strong, instinctive football player who moves like a corner/ linebacker/end. Hybrid.
We have much better CB's this year then we did last year…. I think that is a much bigger + for us then Ellerbe is a -.
He did throw several bad passes that the secondary either dropped or just flubbed on and let the WR catch. If he duplicates last year's performance exactly, but the secondary just makes the standard plays you would expect, Luck has multiple INTs and we win by two TDs. My fear is that Luck is better than last year. That he has the same escape ability, but throws fewer WTF passes.
