Paul Kruger

I'm not sure Kruger fits what the Dolphins want at the other DE position. It's very much a big man's position, they want a guy who can frequently play like a 3-4 DE. The Bengals do the same general thing and I don't think they've had a guy under 280lbs. at the position.

Which makes the whole thing a big stickier.

I believe Jared Odrick's position is "meant" to line up on the left side, and either line up on the tackle, on the tight end, or in between the two, and be covered by blockers. Cameron Wake is a left-side only guy though, so what ends up happening is the defense shifts towards the strong side frequently to get Wake on that edge, and Jared Odrick is playing shaded rather than covered against the left tackle.

I don't think there is any huge issue with the pass rush. There are plenty of teams that only field one edge rusher in base defenses, and I don't think it would be ridiculous to allow Olivier Vernon and Derrick Shelby time to develop. Both of them are fairly big, and I think potentially have the ability to do what Coyle wants at LDE, as Shelby has experience as a nose tackle in college and Vernon is strong and reduces at times.

If they really wanted to add someone, I think it would be easier for them to go to a psuedo 3-4 defense and use Wake's ability to play on the strong side to go with a weak-side pass rushing OLB in Misi's place. It all depends on what they wanna do, though.

 

I don't see the Ravens letting him get away.

 

At this point I think he would be more along the lines of luxury signing. As Dpate mentioned, he doesn't inherently fit the base defense. I think if Miami does acquire a DE, it will be one that would only be seeing snaps in nickel.

 

Besides what Dpate & Stringer said, it wouldn't make any cap space sense to pay Kruger big money when we can draft a pass rusher at a fraction of his cost.

 

Our free agency will mostly likely be used on upgrading immediate needs with players who can make an immediate impact such as at WR, TE, Oline, CB, and FS.

lol and this logic makes no sense, if that's the case why pay Wallace big money when we can draft a WR for half the cost? Same with OT and CB, etc...

 

It makes plenty sense..... to those with greater than a fundamental understanding of the salary cap and building a sustainable franchise. This isn't Madden where we can turn off the cap and sign every damn player we desire.

We're not exactly hurting for pass rush with a 1st Team All Pro DE and finishing 7th in sacks, only 2 behind the Texans. If you want to be a salary cap fool and spend 7+ million on a slightly above average pass rusher who isn't much if any of an upgrade in base defense over Misi, then by all means, go ahead and misuse the cap and hinder us at other positions of greater immediate need.

You pay a guy like Wallace, Jennings, or Bowe the money b/c they represent an immediate upgrade to a position of great need, that's why. If you want to spend that money on Kruger then congratulations on overpaying for a situational pass rusher while leaving us empty and needy at WR. What, are you not familiar with this thing called "salary cap"?


BTW, you're like the CEO & founder of ridiculous straw arguments. Absolutely nothing of what I said gives the indication that we should just ignore every position on the field b/c we can draft a player at half the cost instead. Again, you seem to ignorantly have no concept of the salary cap, its implications, and how to properly use it.

 

This probably sounded good in your head but it actually doesn't make a lick of sense in the context of this discussion. We HAVE to draft players to help build the team and sustain it b/c the salary cap isn't high enough to constantly fill every need via FA. If you want to spend a big chunk of money on Kruger so that we don't have to draft a pass rusher (which would be illogical considering Ireland's track record of finding pass rushers), then that becomes money taken away from signing another position, meaning we'll have to draft that other position instead. So pick your poison, b/c either way you're left resorting to the draft.

 

this is laughable, as a pass rusher, Kruger is a huge upgrade over Misi. but he probably wouldn't be replacing Misi in the base formation, he'd be replacing Odrick, who he's a MASSIVE upgrade over. this year Odrick had less sacks (5) than last year (6) despite playing 350 more snaps.

i don't think Kruger is just a situational player.

 

his track record in 5 years HERE in the draft isn't good. every DE or OLB he drafted from Langford to Odrick to Misi, none of them could get to the QB...that's why we're still looking for another pass rusher to help out Wake now.

 

I would like to see if Vernon can grow into that role. I think he showed some real potential in his limited time this season.

I like Kruger a lot. I liked him in that draft. He was on my shortlist for choices at our spot. I also do think he can have a role or a fit in this D. There is always a spot for a great player. Not all teams have it, but, imo, you do need more than one pass rush threat to be dominant. Remember the days with JT and Ogunleye? It's great to have and it's a great way to stop guys like Brady. He actually looked a lot bigger this year than I thought. However, I would hope Vernon can continue to develop.

This is moot anyway. No way the Ravens let him go. JMO.

 

they might, if they can't agree on a deal with Kruger or Ellerbe before they hit the market, then they can only tag one of them and Ellerbe will be of higher priority.

 

I guess anything is possible, but I don't think it's likely. When it's a really good player that a team wants to keep, there's usually a way to make it work.

 

Good luck telling Kevin Coyle to change his defensive scheme so you can bring in Kruger to replace Odrick.
Kruger & Odrick are different players BTW, and in base defense Kruger would not be a massive upgrade over Odrick for the role Coyle uses the position; he'd be lucky to be an upgrade at all. He would however be an upgrade at DE in nickel, but in an ideal world Odrick would move inside during nickel so there wouldn't be any need to "replace" him. So in that regard, if you're looking for a nickel pass rusher to allow Odrick to move inside, you draft one like Carradine or Lemonier in the 2nd round rather than foolishly spending $7+ million on Kruger.

 

I suggest you actually do some research before speaking, so as to not look like a dummy. The NFL's 3rd, 7th, and 12th ranked pass rushers (at 43 DE/34-OLB) are all Ireland's guys (Wake, Ware, Spencer). Find me 3 GMs with a more impressive resume the past 10 years.

BTW, Langford & Odrick weren't drafted as pass rushers, nor were they pass rushers in college. I don't understand why you're making arguments about stuff you don't even understand.

reading is fundamental my friend, i clearly said in the 5 years here in Miami, he hasn't drafted any good pass rushers. i even capitalized the word "here" so you wouldn't overlook it but you did anyway.

and how you give Ireland credit for Ware and Spencer when he ran the scouting dept in Dallas but don't put the drafts he ran in Miami on him when his title was general manager is hilarious.

the only reason you don't put the first 3 on Parcells AND Ireland is because those drafts sucked, if they didn't i highly doubt you or any other member of the ISG would try to pin them on Parcells alone.
