There is an abundance of these players now in White, Turner, Ginn, and Wilson. There have also been many in the past. Sammy (SUCKS) Smith, Jay, AJ, DC, Ricky, Derek Hagan, Jason Allen, and John Avery, off the top of my head. Who else can you name, and who are your top five, ten or, just #1?
Kinda hard to hate Jason Allen. He hasn't done much of anything wrong...because he hasn't done much of anything. Reggie Howard for me.
The one I never understood receiving so much hate was Jay Fiedler. Not that he was by ANY means a great QB - but we had a lot of success and you could tell the guy was giving everything he had. But I don't know if ANYONE was more vilified during their tenure as a Phin. That includes Ginn.
I never disliked a player because of their lack of abilities. I couldn't, and still can't stand Brian Cox because he was just a pure *******.
How can anyone hate Reggie Howard? He forced 3 fumbles, had 2 sacks, and an interception in just 2 years. What were you expecting?
How could anyone hate Jay Fiedler? He didn't have great physical ability but the man had HEART. Gave it his all every game. I have much respect for him, plus he was the starting QB the last time we won a playoff game.
Most if not all of it. Think about all the guys we tried to replace him with - Jay Feeley, Ray Lucas, Brian Griese, Damon Huard and Sage Rosenfels. He still outplayed all of them. And looking back at his stats - he put up a 80 QB rating in 01 and then an 85 rating in 02.. I'll never forget that game against Oakland where he dove across the goal line as time expired for the win. Still my favorite Phins game ever.
I just had a friend add a few names. David Overstreet, Billy Milner, Jackie Shipp, and Jamar Fletcher.
Yeah, kind of. We talked him into coming out of retirement, and should have left well enough alone. He had an absolutely horrible year before calling it quits again.
That made the cover of SI. It was the first game back after 9/11. One of my favorite games of all time too. Such great memories.
I wish I could thank this post 1000x. Fielder and Pennington have a whole lot of similarity to me. Reminds me of the pic of Penny waving the towel last year, or him after diving into the endzone and striking a lame pose against the Patriots (I think.) They both hold a special place in my heart.
All-time Top 5 "hate": Sammy Smith Jerry Wilson Gabril Wilson (not a good list to be named Wilson ) Ray Lucas Jamar Fletcher (for not being Drew Brees) I never understand the hate for Jay. Did he suck at times, yes. Did he drive you crazy, yes. But he got the best out of his very limited ability, always tried his hardest, and was great in the community. He just had the sorry task of having to follow the greatest passer of all time. By comparison, he looked much worse than he was. Dude did help us win a lot of games over a three-four year period, so the "hate" on him is unwarranted in my humble opinion.
I loved Jay man, I used to have a screen name on the ESPN board when I first started posting on message boards "Jaymyboy". Because I started reading the board and how everyone bashed him, I joined the message board strictly to defend Jay Fielder, so that's another reason you can't hate him, I probably wouldn't be here if it wasn't for him. Players I hated? That's a tough one, can't really say I hated anyone. Strongly disliked many, including Fletcher, Howard, Jason Allen(when he plays outside of STs), Ray Lucas, Eddie Moore, McKnight, Hagan, and Wade Smith
My image of Brian Cox is still when he rushed teh opponets sideline and tried to defend his player. Love him for that. I still hate Wanny the most over any player. He set this franchise back 10 years IMO. As for a player. I think they probably tried the best they could. If I had to select someone I would say Crowder. IMO he rode the shirt tails of Zach and hasn't done squat since but talk mess.
I do not believe that any QB, even Peyton, could have come in after Dan without the wrath of the fans. Jay reminds me some of Penny.
I liked John Avery. I would also put Bobby Humphrey on the list. He was supposed to come in and replace Sammie (opps I dropped the ball) Smith and finally give us the running game we needed.
Adding in Wanny, and other coaches, seems to be in tune with this thread. He was 42-31 with a couple of playoffs. However, he had to follow JJ and all the expectations for Phans. Not an easy thing to do with all the anger over JJ giving up>
Nick Saban? I know he did some good things as a coach but the amount of money he forced Wayne to pay (to lure him here AND through his ridiculous coaching staff) was a killer. How about Rob Konrad? Was anyone better at catching a ball in the flats, getting taken down by a defender in the open field and then fumbling?
I don't hate any personally but I hate that they were associated with and/or the damage they helped levy on the Phins franchise. Dave Wannstache Tom Olivadotti Chuck Studley Jay Fiedler Thurman Thomas
Thats a cop out. I never hated Jay Fiedler because he wasn't Dan Marino. I couldn't stand Jay Fiedler because of his lack of talent and because he was a glaring sign that the Wanny crew didn't believe in how important talent at the QB position is.
I guess you forgot about how our defense was shutting them down all day and the ONLY reason we needed that TD from Fiedler to win the game was because he had just thrown a pick six prior to that, to give Oakland a late lead. Usually, we won games despite Jay Fielder, in this case, Fiedler won the game despite himself. Hell of a defining moment there. The humidity should have been on that SI cover, it had more to do with that win than he did
Call it what you will. Many fans are the exception to this sentiment, you and I are among them. However, there are MANY who felt this way, and cannot be discounted. The same could be said in Green Bay when Farve left. Aaron Rogers was ripped by many of the Packer faithful before winning them over. Jay was not as fortunate..
If memory serves, David Overstreet was killed in a car wreck. Kinda hard to hate someone who had that happen to them.
GODDAMNIT!!! You have to rain on my parade for a great memory. You may be correct but, to me, that does not matter. LOL
