this may be a Captain Obvious moment but you guys did realize each of their names on the cave ceiling had "the numbers" next to them. 4 (Locke), 8 (Reyes), 15 (Ford?), 16 (Kate?), 23 (Sheppard), 42 (Kwon)... Oceanic Six... six numbers...

great episode tonight. I'm totally confused about the Jacob vs MIB thing... good vs evil, but which is which?

And I have no idea where Richard fits in.

I think they are opposites, but not necessarily good vs. evil. They are playing by some set of rules and are also apparently being watched by some other force (the kid) which is even more confusing.

yeah, and neither was Locke... :pity: I was thinking about this whole theory deal this morning... using the numbers and then realized i had Kate in there when we didn't see her on the wall last night... :pity:

I'll share my "finding" even though it's wrong... it may have some use... Jacob visited (touched) four of the seven on the wall prior to the crash of flight 815. Locke, Kate, Kwon and Sawyer (Ford). Jacob visited Jack, Jarrah and Reyes after the crash of flight 815 and also after they'd already been on the island. Well, I had assigned their numbers to six of them incorrectly I might add. I had 4, 8 and 42 being assigned to three who had been touched before the crash and then 15, 16 and 23 assigned to three who had been touched after the crash. If you believe in the whole balance theory (black and white rocks on a scale example) and then add up those numbers, you get totals of 54 each. balance. Yet, it's wrong so it means nothing... I ****ing hate this show!!

Anyway, I don't understand how Jacob brought each of them to the island IF some were touched after the crash of flight 815 (didn't Desmond bring them to the island by not pushing the button?). Yeah there's a lot I don't understand...

Such as the smoke monster (MIB) being called the security system, yet it was Jacob who is supposedly recruiting people to "protect" the island. Funny how last season it was Ben and his nemesis who were fighting over the island. Seems like there's always someone protecting the island and someone trying to take it away (Dharma vs the Others). balance...

Some pretty good comments in this thread so far about last night's episode. I frankly have no idea what's going on or how things fit in. Last night didn't really answer any real questions in my opinion. Also how does Charles Widmore, Daniel's mother and even Ben fit into this? A lot of it doesn't make a lot of sense at this moment.

I've been trying to wrap my head around this too.
I'm thinking it's something like this:
Jacob is like the overseer and the MIB is the security. They have to work as a team to protect the island. Jacob's time is up and is looking for a 'candidate' to replace himself. The MIB is tired of protecting the island and is 'trapped' doing it as long as there is an overseer like Jacob. So the MIB is trying to kill all the candidates so he can escape his responsiblity to the island. Unfortunately he isn't allowed to kill anyone directly since he is still technically bound to protecting the island.

ok maybe i'm confused here but hadn't Helen already left Locke before he went on this walkbout trip that led him to the island? Why would she be with him in this future vision now? If he's still paralyzed, that means he still had the feud with his dad, which was the reason she left him in the first place...

also, ben as a nerdy western european history teacher= gold (though same question there, how did widmore and eloise meet if there was no island)

Because they're in an alternative universe. This isn't the same universe of what would have happened if they never crashed on the island. This universe has been created because of what the castaways did in blowing up the island when they traveled back in time.

    1. That was an interesting nugget. The way Flocke spoke about human emotions he has had makes me wonder... The way he said betrayal made me think of angels... For some reason, I can't seem to shake the feeling that's what we're dealing with.

    2. Did you notice the name goodspeed (Horace or Ethan) was crossed out?

    3. Has to be Jack because Christian was dead and his name would of been crossed out (Flocke crossed Locke's name out)

    4. That's what I was wondering too. Was the kid bleeding the first time Flocke saw him (when he was talking to Richard)? I have to watch that scene again.

It wasn't the actual actor (because he's as tall as Shaq is now or close to it anyway) but maybe that was what they were going for, someone that looked like Walt would back in 2004.

And I also thought the young boy on the island was a young Jacob. But him being Aaron could be interesting however Aaron is still back in LA, didn't Kate leave him with Claire's aunt?

Nice find with the screen caps. Let's put it this way, I don't think the writers/producers randomly put that kid in that scene. I think they wanted us to at least remember/think of Walt.

Which brings me to another thing Walt was pretty important to Lost during Seasons 1 and 2, especially to the Others. And now he's never mentioned at all. I do really hope we get an explaination as to why he was so important and more on his special powers. Unfortunately I think he's not going to be a factor at all for the rest of the show which is too bad.

I'm not even asking for much, maybe just a line or two from Ben or Richard saying how they were told by Jacob to take Walt because they thought he had ESP/special powers and once they realized that either he didn't have them or he wasn't a threat to the Others or the Island they didn't need him anymore so they used him to get Michael to spy for them etc. I mean if they don't explain it, it kind of makes the ending of Season 1 and Season 2 almost unimportant in retrospect, especially since I remember all of those crazy theories about how Walt is the key to everything.

EDIT: After I typed the last line it appears that a lot of things we viewed as important at the time are no unimportant.

So far this season, I'm getting the feeling the writers are winging it.
I don't think that's really the case, it's just the feeling I've had since the new season began. Especially the last 2 episodes.
I'm probably wrong. I always am with this friggin show.

We know Walt has some special power. More than a few times he has appeared where he shouldn't have, and for some reason Birds end up flying into windows around him. Ben has said Walt was a handful and they got more than they bargained for...

Also, it's long been rumored the reason Fox knows the ending of the show is because he and Walt filmed a secret scene together.

What is interesting is we know Jack is a potential candidate... Makes me wonder if he becomes the new Jacob if M.I.B. fails. and that's somehow the ending of the show.

I remember all of that but I want to know why they targeted Walt and why they let him go for seemingly nothing. I've heard of the secret scene but I think it's mainly internet rumor BS. I guess we'll see in a few months though.

That would be pretty cool in my opinion.

Right. I'm just going along for the ride at this point. It's clear this season is going to be a mind****. I'm not stressing about endings or whether producers were making it up as they go. By the end of it, that question will get answered for sure. I'm not sure what fans are expecting 4 episodes in... It's LOST, not heroes.

    Here's a cool tidbt...

    http://www.tvovermind.com/lost/losts-writing-on-the-wall-whos-a-candidate/19047

All of the recognizable names on Jacob's numbers list. There's quite a few we know. Some interesting ones are Juliet, Linus (Ben? Maybe he crossed out once he was claimed... if he was claimed?), Littleton (I assume Claire since she was claimed according to Dogen, which is why I think Ben is claimed) Radzinsky, Miles, Faraday, Shannon, etc... All were crossed out.

This might be considered digging too much but why would Helen(or Locke for that matter) want to invite Locke's dad to the exclusive wedding in Vegas that she proposed? Maybe I'm forgetting something but I thought he didn't talk to him once he was in a wheelchair.

Maybe in this parallel universe Locke's in him wheelchair for another reason. Or its even possible that he was never abandoned by his real parents.

Again, this could just be me looking to deep into things.

Nope you're probably right on about what I bolded. As seen in Kate's alternative universe she was arrested for killing someone at a gas station, I believe, instead of it being her father in the 'real universe' either way she was still arrested and Hurley thinking the numbers and winning the lotto was a curse but in the alternative universe he considered himself the luckiest man alive either way he still won the lotto.

It seems like the alternative and 'real' universes are pretty similar but there are slight changes.

It also seems that Jacob never gave Sawyer the pen to finish the letter, so he was in Australia for different reasons... Everything seems different but at the same time the same.
