another whale attack [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xht0HcPryWA"]YouTube- Rosie O'Donnell vs. Elisabeth Hasselbeck Cat Fight![/ame]
We were there last April and they brought one whale out they said was Shamu. He was enormous and his dorsal fin was drooped over to the side. He looked like the real deal to me. All he did in the show was swim around a few times and splash people. They definitely weren't using shamu to refer to the whole group.
mystery solved... Once it was leaked to the whales that the dinner included seafood you knew it was only a matter of time before one of them snapped.
CNN reports that they brought in homicide investigators and suspect no foul play.... Phew, glad I'm in the clear.
This is a damn shame on so many levels. The trainer killed by the one thing she loved so much she devoted her life in working with and studying. Trainers family suffering from such a horrible loss. The Orca itself and what may happen to him as a result of this. The reputation of organizations like Sea World and Zoo's that get attacked for holding animals in a form of captivity while their invaluable additions to research and awareness which helps the wild populations gets completely ignored. Having to hear the nutjob PETA activists use this tragedy as a 6 month long publicity campaign to bring them more attention to their whacked out agendas. It's a shame this happened but there are known risks for anyone choosing to study and work with predatory animals. Sea Worlds record on this has been good up to this unfortunate incident.
I hope they don't euthanize the culprit. They are called Killer whales. It is not the whale's fault that we keep it in captivity and try to play with it. Condolences to the family of the trainer, but I hope our American need for justice/scapegoat doesn't get the best of us here.
There is a pretty big cover up from the media on this. The guy from Metro Zoo has let the cat out of the bag and given some details to this event. Seaworld has repeatedly said that the trainer was "drowned" as The whale was "playing" with her. Not so. The attack was viscous and VERY violent and GRUESOME in nature. according to Ron Mcgill. Why the coverup?
