Wow. Can't believe there isn't a single thread on the 8.8 earthquake in Chile! The last time a quake of this magnitude hit Chile, Hawaii was hit with a tsunami that killed 68 people. Warning is on for the entire West Coast as well, and Alaska. I'd stay away from low-lying coastal areas today from Noon on. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100227/ap_on_re_us/us_quake_tsunami_alerts

Everybody within warnings reach, please be careful. I am honestly surprised the death toll in Chili isn't MUCH higher
In Santiago, 200 miles from the epicenter, buildings collapsed and people were killed. The death toll is bound to be in the tens of thousands by the final count.
Damn, two guys I was working with the past two weeks are from Chile. We got off the same plane in Atlanta last night. I wonder if they know about the earthquake.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100227/ap_on_re_la_am_ca/lt_chile_earthquake TALCA, Chile – A devastating earthquake struck Chile early Saturday, toppling homes, collapsing bridges and plunging trucks into the fractured earth. A tsunami set off by the magnitude-8.8 quake threatened every nation around the Pacific Ocean — roughly a quarter of the globe. Chileans near the epicenter were tossed about as if shaken by a giant. It was the strongest earthquake to hit Chile in 50 years and one of the strongest ever measured anywhere. President-elect Sebastian Pinera said more than 120 people died, but that number was rising quickly. The quake shook buildings in Argentina's capital of Buenos Aires, and was felt as far away as Sao Paulo in Brazil — 1,800 miles (2,900 kilometers) to the east.
but it's better to have some form of floatation device then nothing... in all seriousness this could be real bad for Hawaii... estimating 6 to 12 foot waves. I live on the CA coast (well not on the coast, but 12 miles inland) and we've had warnings here before due to huge quakes in Asia and Alaska. Yet nothing that large has ever come close to the CA coast since I've been living here (1980). Good thing though is that they have time to get to higher ground. Unlike those poor people in Indonesia back in 2004.
what i was thinking. Good thing we can warn people this time around. Thoughts and prayers to my brothers and sisters in chile.
Nabs ... you think the Tsunami is going to hit as far north as you? For those of you that have a hard time understanding how big this thing is, let me put it this way: The 1989 Bay Area Quake came in at an impressive 6.9 on the Richter Scale. This beast came in at 8.8. In other words, it's roughly 1000 times more powerful than the one from 1989.
The coastal areas in the southern part of the state and on the peninsula might see some waves; I'm really concerned about Victoria Island in BC, though. Seattle proper is located within Elliott Bay and should see rises in normal tide levels but hopefully not much more than that.
Yeah I knew Seattle was inside that bay (beautiful location, by the way), so I wasn't sure what the impact would be. You'd also think this would affect Southern California, like San Diego and San Jose, no?
You would think so. It's coming up around the time when they would see some effects, although you couldn't tell by coverage from CNN. Another concern is that if water rises quickly at the mouth of the Columbia River, Portland, OR could see some secondary flooding.
In 1960 CHile got hit by a 9.5 earthquake, that is just crazy, That earthquake is the one that caused loss of life in Hawaii and several other Pacific islands. Hopefully that can be avoided with the advanced waring and watch system. One good aspect of globalization....
Tsunami hits French Polynesia; Pacific on watch http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2011208273_apquaketsunami8thld.html?syndication=rss
Moving to higher ground right now. Man it is eerie the bay behind my house looks like a huge pane of glass. Water still receding and low tide ended about 30 min ago. I'll try to keep info coming in when convienent.
The bay area has been issued a tsunami warning. Good thing I live at the highest point of San Francisco
Reports are that 3 people are dead and 10 missing on various small Pacific islands hit early by the tsunami.
we had some minor affects here, three foot surge reported in my county of Ventura. Supposedly a boat was knocked away from it's dock. Minor stuff.
