http://miamiherald.typepad.com/dolphins_in_depth/ sets internal cap....I figured that, but I hope he isn't afraid to get a player or two, that are the play makers....this could be good and bad...you have to spend here and there..
I'd say 90% of teams will. I know the Steelers have also announced an internal cap, which kinda sucks for us fans, I want Ownership to spend money to improve the product, fiscal restraint does PhinFans no good at all.
agreed Pads, but fiscal lunacy does harm as well...i.e. Redskins....If the player makes sense spend the money...by making sense I mean, in his prime or right before, a proven track record, and somebody that ends alot of problems with one signing.....kinda like Dansby hahaha!
An Owner piously stating they won't spend money signing new players is not exactly good news, whether that money is crazy or not. The problem is more one of quality control, the Redskins threw money at players that did not fit...why sign Haynesworth for 40 million then hire a Head Coach and DefCord who run the 3-4? Coughing the money for Antrele Rolle and Dansby though..makes sense..ditto a Wr...maybe a Te like Watson as well..all 3 could/would start.
Pretty much what you would expect every owner to say, this is a business and you have to have a plan of how much you can afford to spend and still be profitable. The big question is what number the budget is set at and obviously we wont have a real idea of that till after FA plays out for a while and we see what kind of money we offered people.
I love the Watson signing if it happens..been calling that one with my Dolphin buddies around here...yeah agreed I want to see good important signings..not stupid crap...the FO wont do that though..that is like go sign Peppers or something...
I'd prefer he say, "I'll give Bill, Jeff and Tony whatever they need." Only they can really tell what is necessary on the football field, so he better believe them if they say they need more. I agree that it's about trusting your people's judgement when they spend.
Smart teams will set an internal cap, because you have to operate under the assumption that it will return. You could argue about going for it all this year. But look at the Steelers. They're in the hunt every year and they're a relatively frugal franchise. They get it done with elite scouting, coaching and front office personnel. That is a prime example of a franchise that builds through the draft, and drafts well.
I don't see any reason to worry that the team will be unwilling to pay someone what (they feel) he's worth. Per the article - Last year: According to NFLPA figures the team's total payroll of $126,855,921 was the second highest in the NFL. This indicates to me that they're not afraid to spend.
Well you can point to the players who didn't work out so well. There have been several. On the other hand we've also signed quite a few players who have come in and helped. It seems to me that they've gone after some of the more sought after FAs but placed a ceiling on how much they'll pay. Calvin Pace being one example. Knowing that they pursued Pace, I would think they'll also go after Dansby. But I won't be surprised if we get outbid.
Ohh wait what was that Muck?!?! Build through the draft, that is a novel idea....that's why I don't think a 3rd for Q makes sense to me much...4th all day, 3rd I'd pass...
That is sort of misleading stat LA, we cut guys and carried their contract cost into 2009, without Wilford and Greene and Holiday our number was actually much lower.
