Trick r Treat- Not that good of a movie. I liked the 80's movie better and it had the awesome Fastway soundtrack

You Move, You Die. Fun...a kind of tongue-in-cheek romp out of New Zealand; fairly derivative of Tarantino's work, but if you're going to steal, steal from the best.

L4yer Cake. Really, REALLY good! Amazing acting. Daniel Craig is one of the strongest screen presences working today; even in an ensemble cast, he carries the film.

A lot of fun to watch, although the very end is kind of schlocky. The DVD contains an alternate ending and some good featurettes.

    Agreed.

Very high on concept and the first 3/4s of the film was leading up to something out of the ordinary, but in the end it didn't deliver what it could have.

Worth seeing just for Willem Defoe's great line about how safe it is being human in a vampire dominated world.

Watched [IMG] tonight on SpikeTv. Wasn't near as good as the original remake, but mildly entertaining. Not worth a rent though.

The twists in this movie are fantastic

I love how Butler's character goes from being the victim,to the hero, to the villian. I never really feel like Jamie Foxx is convincing enough as "the hero" though, and even to the end found myself rooting for Butler, even as he is killing innocent people.

    Brief Interviews with Hideous Men.

IFC film with Julianne Nicholson in an understated portrayal of a graduate assistant conducting a research project about men and women; based on a novel by the late David Foster Wallace.

Starts out funny and ends up where you would never have imagined from watching the beginning. Borrows more than a little stylistically from early Woody Allen in the visual sense.

One of the most impressive movies I've seen in a while; only 88 minutes, but every second is crafted like a poem. I'll want to own this one.

    The Girlfriend Experience.

Documentary-style film about a high-priced NY escort, played by Sasha Gray. She's actually very good in it; low-key, not going on like a coke whore as usual.

What ruins it is that it's directed by Steven Soderbergh in his own cooler-than-thou style, which renders it about half the film it would be by any other director who isn't so annoyingly in love with himself.

It opens with great promise and flows nicely well past the middle, but doesn't deliver in the end. A waste of a great premise and a nice performance by Gray.

    Bronson.

I've been waiting since last Summer to see this and it's finally in release in the US.

Based on the true story of a convict in prison in England for 35 years and counting, this is as violent as advertised. The guy was born Michael Peterson, but adopted the name Charles Bronson in prison because he identified with the tough characters Bronson portrayed.

The film is highly stylized and somewhat hard to follow at times, but it delivers the story in a BIG way. A real tour de force for Tom Hardy in the role.

Shutter Island. I read the book last summer and couldn't put it down. The movie was excellent and followed the book closely (minus the last bit of dialog). All the actors were great, too.

Went on a bit of documentary kick via streaming some Netflix today.

Yes Men - A very sardonic film that chronicles the two main characters ("The Yes Men") as they take on the World Trade Organization and McDonalds. Eye opening and at times shocking. I really enjoyed it. 5 of 5 stars.

Beer Wars - A look at the very compeptitive beer industry. The film contrasts small breweries, such as Dogfish and Yuengling to the big guys. Budweiser is painted as the villian. My only real beef with the film is the portrayal of Samuel Adams as a craft brewer. Boston Beer Company is actually the fourth largest brewering in the United States. I really wish I could get Dogfish or Yuengling here in Kansas. 5 of 5 stars.

Kurt and Courtney - This documentary was pretty controversial when it came out, primarily for the fact that it suggests that Kurt's Cobain's death has unanswered questions. It's an enjoyable documentary, but I think the film maker got taken for some stories by a number of folks hoping to ride the coat tale's of Cobain's death. Mostly what I got out of the film was that Courney Love is a psychopath. Shocking. 4 of 5 stars.

Beer Wars was an eye-opener in terms of explaining how entrenched the protectionism runs for the mega-breweries - read: Budweiser.

Saw Shutter Island on Saturday, while I think the acting was very good and it had an interesting story, I thought it was just ok maybe 2.5 to 3 stars out of 5. I think it had to do with the obvious outcome, which anyone could probably have guessed what was going to be the ending to a certain extend about 15 minutes in so maybe that's why I didn't like it more.
