Typically this regime doesn't do PC's for free agent signees.

Didn't Penny have one? Besides they need to do it for Dansby! I have racked my brain and I can't think of a bigger free agent the Dolphins have ever brought in.

Free agency signee or trade, I think we're talking about offseason acquisitions overall.

Ricky was titanic in that the negotiations were long and drawn out, and we gave up big picks. Culpepper was also big, supposedly our franchise QB. Junior Seau and David Boston were heralded (the anticipatory traffic of all three knocked over our servers way back then ).

Still, Dansby is one of the biggest signings we've had over the last 10 years or so.

Well either way I hope we hear from him! This type of shift in spending by our FO is a huge indication that they are committed to the 3yr plan. The Dolphins need to put Dansby out there to the less hmmmmmm how should I say it? Less diehard fans, get everyone pumped up and get butts in seats early!!! Enough of these damn JUNKS and Patsy fans in my house!

they don't even have a video segment of it on nfl site.they have one for cribbs, peppers and boldin.unless they are waiting on official paper signing to happen.it's one of the only things i don't like about our fo and i can understand not wanting to give out certain information but thats why they have a media/pr consultant with them usually.

Keith Jackson in 1992 might have been bigger. He had been to a couple of Pro Bowls.

Against the Bills. We destroyed them 37-10.

I was thinking the other day about the Dolphins best free agents signings in history and I think Jackson might have been the best. Brock Marion, Keith Byars and Kevin Donnalley were also good, but it's strange to think our first-ever FA acquisition might still be our best.

Speaking of the contrast between this regime and the way it used to be, I remember Deion Sanders having a press conference at team headquarters just for his visit! Front page of all the papers.

    He ultimately signed with Dallas.

That may well be it. I'm trying to think of more. Perhaps Mark Dixon? We got him from the CFL, and he was our best lineman for 5 years. I remember Jimmy saying they could line him up anywhere on the line, and he'd be the best player at that position.

Ironically, Byars and Donnalley are probably better known for how they left (or almost left) than when we got them.

Your post got me thinking more about acquisitions overall.

The trade for Irving Fryar worked out quite well. Could you imagine these Dolphins trading second and third round picks for a 31-year old receiver?

One of the more ballyhooed ones might have been Tony Martin (Part II). This was after Jimmy had been dragged back for one more year. Martin was back to be the deep threat we desperately needed for he and Dan's last hurrah, despite being under federal indictment on money laundering charges. Laundering for a convicted drug dealer known as the "Mayor of Opa Locka", who was being tried concurrently.

Remember when Dan and Nat Moore testified at Martin's trial during training camp?

For the younger members here, picture Peyton Manning and [insert former Colts great here] testifying at a newly signed Marvin Harrison's trial in late August?

Their testimony was vital in that they were character witnesses, claiming Martin would never do such a thing. I probably still have the newspaper with a suited Marino on the front page, standing outside the courthouse.

Again, can you imagine this regime signing a guy who'd just declared bankruptcy and set to stand trial in federal court? Hell, Shula cut Reggie Roby over bankruptcy issues!

As for the Trifecta, I'd say that Randy Starks has been their top free agent. As a 3-4 DE, it's not sexy. But I'd say he's arguably the best player on the defense and we've gotten tremendous ROI on that one.

Chad Pennington technically was a free agent. But that's a bit different than what we're talking about here I think.

This regime doesn't have PC to introduce players...a line or two on the miamidolphins.com will be all...Darlington says it's signed now and will be announced by 5:00 pm on twitter...

Yeah, after the 92 season we completely revamped our WR corps. Traded for Fryar, signed Ingram and drafted McDuffie after dumping Clayton and Duper.

Ron Heller was another good FA signing. In 93, the first offseason of unrestricted FA, Shula hauled in Byars, Ingram and Heller. Probably still our best FA class to date.

That's what made Shula so great. He adapted to any situation. Even scored well with the old Plan B Free Agents when he got E.J. Junior, Cliff Odom and Tony Paige.

Those picks we gave up for Ricky turned into nothing for the players that were drafted in them. It was well worth it. Trust me, Wannstedt and co would not have drafted any better with those picks. And we still have Ricky. Without him we win 5 or 6 games in 09 and the wildcat isn't as effective in 08.

Excellent article. You can tell its not going to be long before he gains the leadership role we desperately need on defense. This guy is a leader. Great signing!

Great read Muck, thanks for posting. Boy am I excited for the season to start. Dansby is one of the best blitzing ILB in the league, it's going to be fun to see what Nolan does with him.

Wow he's got a great attitude. He doesn't take anything for granted and knows he has to work hard to earn the respect of others. He's definitely excited to be here and become a better player.

I'm happy he will indeed play inside. I think he's better there than being an outside pass rusher. Being inside will allow him to do what he does best and make plays.

And now that it's confirmed he's playing on the inside, I want to draft an OLB in the first round.

Don Shula was an amazing coach but one of the best moves he ever made was trading for Nick Buoniconti the unquestioned leader of the defense in Miami's SuperBowl Victories and undefeated season.
I wouldn't place bets that McClain is off the board even with the Dansby pickup. He is too good to not consider if he is there.

I think the Front office is definately going to look at moving down with the 12th pick. Somewhere at the beginning of the twenties, and if Dez Bryant is still there (which i doubt) i'm sure the bengals will jump on it.
