What? I would love Bethea but no way in hell would I give up a first round pick for him.

Nor would they, probably.I think they'd try to negotiate a lesser pick.

Looks like we have some good old-fashioned competition in the FS market. Jets just sold off Kerry Rhodes to the Cardinals.

To me, Melvin Bullit is much more interesting, he filled in for Bob Sanders and played well enough for the Colts to keep wining..

He also played cornerback well. Same goes for Mike Adams, who doesn't get a lot of love in Cleveland. He's not great but he's a versatile player.

Give me Sharper over any of them. If they can get him to sign a 2-3 year deal he gives them an instant upgrade. I'd also try to sign A. Bryant. That would give them sooooo many options in the draft.

Sharper would be ideal, but New Orleans would answer any offer with Ed Reed money (which in 2010 dollars is 9+ million a year). The FO needs to make a big offer to Atogwe, something the Rams won't match.

    oh definitely not here iether.
I am almost 100% certain that we are going OLB in round 1 and I think its Graham. The way he clogs the run game and plays the QB rushing he can free up tons of space for Dansby and CC to attack the Ball carrier or QB or what not.

I would give up a 3rd and a 5th next year for Bethea but not our 2nd considering we still have ZERO FREAKING WR!

I have to throw in for Earl Thomas at 12. I would rather draft this guy at 12 than pick up just about any of these guys. I might have interest in Atogwe, but that is about it. The asking price for Bethea is just too high.

Hopfully miami signs Shaper for a one year deal or Atogwe for a multi year deal

New Orleans is curently trying to re-sign him but the only word is that it is going in a positive direction. Right now Sharper is giving them the chance to re-sign him before he talks to another team.

You can bet that if talks break down or stall he will be in Miami for a visit (if they have not signed a S by then) and if Miami offers him the right deal NO won't have the chance to answer anything but questions to their media as to why he's gone.

But we both know that's not gonna happen. I've heard Sharper is giving NO first right of refusal and is apparently genuine about it, as opposed to Rolle. That's why I think the FO needs to go after Atogwe hard; the Rams aren't eager to pay him given last season's shoulder injury and with a new owner coming in, plus the guy is a young ball hawk on par with Sharper.

Id rather have Sharper personally and because Atogwe is going to want, and most likely get, a lot more money.

I had just read a very recent article that said Sharper is staying in NO's in good faith to let them try to work out a deal. Only word is that it's been positive. So he is giving them first rights to put up or else and yes, he is genuine about it I'm sure.

I don't see them breaking the bank for him because he is 34 but ya never know.

And? The kid's worth it. A team can't let money get in the way of acquiring top shelf talent, especially in an uncapped year. Paying him $8 million a year would be a discount.

Get Atogwe or Randall. Doesnt matter which one really. They can both play. If Nolan can get pressure on the QB with the front seven he will have at his disposal (pre-draft), it will make any safety look better.

I think the Dolphins should address NT or WR with their first pick. Id prefer to see them trade back to 15-16 and pick up Dan Williams along with picking up an extra 2nd rounder or 3rd. This way they can pick up Benn (WR) in the 2nd and then get the best available OLB with their next pick.

But I will tell you. Part of me is secretly hoping the Phins get McClain at 12. This kid knows how to play football. He will be the next Patrick Willis. He knows how to get to the football and explodes on impact. Pairing him alongside Dansby, with Wake and JT on the ends will be a nightmare for any team. Or move Dansby outside with Wake, then have McClain on the inside with Crowder. Id piss my pants if I had to run through that wall of LBs.

Lots of options in the draft. But one thing is clear, imo- the Phins need to address FS help through FA in the form of Randall or Atogwe.

A Team must spend wisely no matter what year it is. Sure the fans don't care but guess what? The owners do, and this owner has put a limit on what they can spend.

They also just let go of two high priced mistakes and Atogwe imo is a fine Safety but he is coming off shoulder surgery. Paying him 8 million a year is fine but ONLY if Sharper re-signs with NO's. That's not a given. If Atogwe is top shelf, Sharper is above that. All money aside....

Love McClain but he is no Pattrick Willis and that's not a put down.

FS will be filled somewhere, somehow. They're short a couple as it stands and always want 6-7 going into camp.

we need to sign a FS if we want flexibility in this draft. Right now we have 4 needs and FS is one of the 2 more urgents...

    NT-FS-OLB-WR

we gotta shore up the NT or FS (or both) position through FA to go into the draft with at a max number of 2/3 needs...

I imagine the front office knows our needs quite well, and knows the prospects of filling them adequately through the draft at spots we currently have.

I'm not worried about the drafting of our regime, it's the FA signings I'm worried about (Dansby excluded).

I would rather have Atogwe, I do not want to have to draft a safety in the first round unless Eric Berry some how falls to us. In fact unless someone falls and its to good to pass up, I would like to trade back and pick up a couple more picks for the draft.

Atogwe wasn't that good last season and $8M is certainly not a discount. Rolle just signed 5/37.5 which was the most expensive safety contract in the history of the NFL, why would paying Atogwe more than that be a discount?
Also, why are we calling a soon to be 29 year old man a kid?

Bullitt in 2009, let's take a look shall we?

Thrown at: 30, Receptions allowed: 25, %Ct: 83.3, Average per catch; 16.3, YAC: 100, Passes defensed: 1, INT: 0, TDs allowed: 2, NFL QB Rating for passes thrown into his coverage: 141.0, Missed tackles: 10, tied for 16th most amongst safeties.
PFF ranked him 83rd overall out of 87 safeties. Coverage ranking alone placed him 79th out of 87.

At best, as a SS, which we don't need, he sounds like a younger version of Gibril Wilson. He has never stood out to me when watching the Colts.

You still think he is more interesting than Bethea?

Yes I do, simply because when he filled in for Bob Sanders, the key cog in the Colts secondary, there was no drop off in the defense.

  29. Springveldt

That's because he mainly played run support. Any time I watched the Colts, he was horrendous in coverage.

  30. MrClean

He is a SS, where would we play him? You want to replace Wilson with a younger version of Wilson? Besides, the key cog in the Colts secondary is not Sanders, it is Bethea. Sanders played just 376 snaps in 2008 and only 75 last year. You can't be the key cog when in 6 yrs in the league you only come close to playing a full season 2 times. Since 2004, Sanders games played per year read like this: 6, 14, 4, 15, 6, 2.

It is pure speculation to say that if the Colts did have a healthy Sanders the past two seasons, they'd have done no better than they did with Bullitt.

Atogwe also suffered a shoulder injury that shortened his season by four games. As for why it's a discount, it's simply because the last big FS contract was Ed Reed's in 2006.

First, adjust for inflation from '06, in Reed's case the baseline is $7.97 million. Then apply the standard 10% yearly contract hike for each season since '06. Doing that, Ed Reed-level money for a safety comes out to $10.83 million per season. So, yes, $8 million is a discount. In fact, it's highway robbery for somebody of Atogwe's talent.

Because for somebody at his position he's young.

I'd rather we sign Sharper, we just need a stop gap till Culver develops well enough, but I wouldn't mind getting Atogwe.

Also would like to see us sign antonio Bryant, gives us the ability to go TE and all defense in the draft.

Eh? Culver is a strong safety.

Bryant doesn't address the need for a #1, which at present is our only need a receiver.

We still would draft a WR at some point in the draft.

I think Atogwe is that FS that you must try and get. Don't care what kind of money Rolle just got he's not on the same level as Atogwe. Atogwe would completely change this defense.

And, so would Sharper. But I'd rather have the young guy then the 34 year old fossil.

I agree about Graham. Although I think Graham might be best suited as a 4-3 DE. I think he could become a monster DE in a couple years.

    Funny considering "THAT FOSSIL SHARPER"
had 9 interceptions in 14 games last season or the same amount as :wink2:
    Bell...3
    Davis..4
    Smith..0
    Culver...1
    Crowder...1

"Sharper the fossil" also had 376 return yards off the interceptions with 3 touch downs:yes:

That fossil is quite the playmaker:yes:

however, there a few in-house possibilities:

I doubt we go with an in house solution at FS. If Clemons, Smith, or J. Allen were our guy, we wouldn't have offered Antrel Rolle $35M.

If we go to the draft, I like Morgan Burnett in the 2nd or 3rd. I think he can be a poor man's Ed Reed. We just need someone who can ball hawk the middle of the field, and make a tackle when he is supposed to. Burnett can do that. He caused 15 turnovers in 3 years at Georgia Tech. I'll take 5 turnovers per year from a free safety.

Maybe I got him confused with Clemons, sorry.

I disagree about Bryant, IF this regime can turn around his attitude and work ethic, I believe he has the talent to become a very solid #1 WR that we need. That doesn't mean I wouldn't want us to still draft a WR, but signing Bryan, IF Sparano and Parcells (a master motivator) can turn him into a solid player, would allow us more flexibility to address our needs on D earlier in the draft. We still need BADLY: NT, FS, OLB on D. Signing Bryant, IF we turn him around, would really mean our biggest need in the draft for offense would be TE.

With Boldin gone and Marshall likely on his way to Chicago, not to mention costing too much, who else is out there at such a low cost besides Bryant that has this potential and has shown it, albeit in flashes?
