I forget, is Rodgers a true NT or do they play a 4-3 in Cleveland. And if they are playing a 3-4 in CLeveland why would they be letting Rodgers go? NT's are at a premium this year. I don't buy the sources reason.

Just about everyone besides Cribbs is available with the mess that team is in and Holmgren has no allegiance to anyone. Our feelers might be out.

They play a 3-4, but his attitude and the emergence of Rubin makes him and his contract expandable. But he is a good player just not the BEAST he used to be.

And he can play in a 4-3, infact he was succesfull in Detroit playing there.

The thing is, although you couldnt tell by looking at him Bill Parcells has an anti-fat thing going on. He's strict on player weights, and the guys they draft for the position typically end up in the 315-320 pound range and are strictly watched weight wise, rather than just let go as long as they can play.

Shaun Rogers and Jamal Williams both have probably violated their weight clauses their entire career.

Freelancing at the NT position doesn't fly anywhere.

Cleveland plays a 3-4 just like us. There's a reason they're looking to deal him.

Well at least we have some options in FA at the NT position now and at a perfect time. With the sad news on Ferguson I would make a run at Big Baby or Jamal Williams.

Rodgers has better play but Williams would be a better stop gap, mentor and locker room influence than the Baby.

I was gonna mention, the freelqnce thing creates an automatic NOT, emphasis on the NO part, with Nolan and his scheme.
Jamal Williams is gonna be our next NT me thinks.

Is it freelancing, or is it what happens when you play a 350+ pound player too many snaps? In '08 he got 903 snaps, more than every DT other than Kevin Williams. The only guys in Rogers weight class even remotely close to that are getting 600-something snaps.

Part of the issue, I think, is playing Shaun Rogers constantly is he's playing both passing situations and run situations, and is expected to be the man in both.

Sounds like Wannstadt and Ricky all over again, except for Mangini and Rodgers are both fat. :pointlol:

    Good info.

From what I can tell he was on pace for 758 in '09, which works out to nine fewer snaps per game. But that's still near the top of the DT list, and 18 more (overall) than Randy Starks (our resident 3-down guy) got in '09.

Would the Dolphins be fine with a $6.9 million price tag this year? He's 30 and entering the third year of a $42 million contract. And coming off a broken leg.

From what I'm reading, Ahtyba Rubin stepped up last year and there's spec that Rogers could be moved to DE a la Haloti Ngata.

Rubin definitely stepped it up at the end of the season once Rogers was out of the picture. In fact, I don't believe they allowed over 100 yards rushing once he was annointed the starter.

He's a dominant defensive linemen who can contribute in both the run game and the passing game?

When he feels like it. How often is that? I am not questioning his dominance when he feels like it. That is not what this regime is all about. They want players that want to be their best all the time, not when its good for them.

You're missing the point. He's a 350 pound player, you cannot play one of those every snap and not expect fatigue to enter into the equation. It's not a Randy Moss style "when he wants to", it's when he's not overused.

Shaun Rogers played 903 snaps in 2008. Jason Ferguson, that same year played 449. I'm no mathologist, but I'm pretty sure that is less than half the snaps, as a better conditioned player.

Thanks for the numbers. I'll agree with you on that.

Another issue, if i remember correctly, he signed a huge contract when he went to cleveland. That has to be considered as well.

Name one 350 guy that doesnt take plays off, its called fatigue. specially as Disgust points out hes on the field ridiculous amounts of time.

It'll take probably s third this year and a 4th next year. You do that.

Then you sign Antonio Bryant, and draft a Safety and an LB. Offseason over.

He's weight would be a problem for the FO, and this FO hates overweight DT. Look at the problems they had with Solai.

Rodgers is a beast! This guy is in the back field all game long disrupting both run and pass plays. Early on he fell out of favor because Mangina called him fat! Serious who is Mangina to call someone fat? This guy would take up multiple blockers and allow Dansby to roam free. Not to mention he blocks FG and extra points. He blocked 2 in the first Cincy game last year that got the Browns to OT. The possibilities with him and Nolan are endless. The Cleveland papers also reported a while back that Thigpen is a QB Holmgrem is interested in.

I don't know about Rogers, he has been used so much, how much tread is left on the tire? If we were to use Rogers half as much as he is being used now, like we did with Ferguson, that would reduce the wear and tear, but that, IMO, would require a smaller contract.

Yeah I follow the Browns pretty close out of hate and for ammo in a verbal fued with my uncle. Believe it or not Thigpen is one of the QB's Holmgrem has circle to trade for like he did for Farve when he got to GB and Hasselchoke in SEA. Couple local Cleveland beat writers were reporting it.

Ok, he signed a 6 year 42 milliion dollar contract in 2008. I do not have the breakdown of the paragraph 5 per year, signing bonus, or the guaranteed $. Someone tell me what fair compensation would be for him.

Are there any connections between Holmgren and Parcells similiar to Pioli and Parcells?

Not that I know of, but that might be better. No family discounts! We have a potiential starting qb Holmgrem wants, the only question is do Parcells and CO. Want Rodgers? I hope so!

Very interesting thought. I'm completely against trading Thigpen, as I think he has nice value and is a very good quality QB--especially as a backup QB. However, a guy that would me me think about trading him is definitely Shaun Rogers.

If we could do a straight up, I think Ireland would be very interested.

Yeah I like the idea of a Thigpen insurance policy, but with Penny back I wouldn't even think twice about moving Thigpen for Rodgers. Rodgers makes every bit the impact Wilfork does maybe more, he is just on a junk team. The fact that Rodgers blocks multiple kicks a year and produces like Wilfork on run and pass downs is amazing! You put this guy infront of Dansby and the sky is the limit! So I would gladly move an insurance policy at QB to get a big impact on defense!

Only problem with that is there are a lot of teams that need a NT that have a shot at him before our 43rd pick. Rodgers will easily play at a all pro level for the next 3-4 years, he has been a all pro and was on his way to a probowl in 2009 until an injury. NT is a pretty important piece to the 3-4 and we would struggle if our NT is filled by a developing Solia and a draft pick I.E Williams, Thomas, or Cody.

It depends whether or not we're going with a one-gap or two-gap at the nose this year. If you allow the man to penetrate and play the way he's always liked to he's a dominant presence. He really can flat out take over. Best pass rushing NT in the league by far. Weight or no weight part of that problem has to do with injuries, the other part lack of pass rush from fat asses.

Rogers-Starks-Merling/Langford-Wake is a ****ING fearsome 4 man line that can do very well against the run.

Just to give you an idea the never perfect but overall useful PFF ranks him as:
2009- 3rd in pass rush to Tony Brown (a pure pass rush specialist) and All-Pro Kevin Williams
2008- 2nd overall to the great Kevin Williams
2007- 1st overall to a wide margin over Albert Haynesworth

It's worth taking a chance on a third rounder for that kind of ability at the NT spot. Pressure from the inside is so hard to stop for an offensive line and most 3-4s can't produce it. It's the one safety net that allows a team to play 2 TE counter the primary rushers, single block the DEs and have the C slowly hold ground against the pass-rush inept pocket collapsing NT.

If you have Starks-Rogers-Merling coming from the inside against that opposing offensive line they are going to cry mercy. They are going to be in pain. Most 3-4 teams when played against by the spread are reduced to a four man line. That four man line still has to answer to the run but will have difficulty creating pass rush with a large LE, an incapable NT, one gap three technique rusher, and the ROLB rushing. The right side of the offensive line will take a break.

Shaun Rogers won't allow that, period end of story.

I don't know if this helps but Rodgers played in a D-3 in Detoilet and was still a beast. I can only dream of the things Nolan would do with Rodgers and Dansby!

I think they would but I would also think they would take a 3rd and one of our 6s for him. Either way it's better than drafting another Pat Turner.

Since Rodgers is coming off injury and he and Mangina don't like each other I don't think the 3rd is needed. The Browns are in need of a QB bad and the decent FA QBs like Carr and Grossman want no part of Cleveland!
