Rolle has pretty bad representation and a accountant that can't use a calculator

If the years are the same and the only difference is 37 mil to 32....he will pay that 5 mill away in taxes in NY anyway.

Not really Rolle claims Florida as his primary residence he pays Florida taxes. For example I am a airline pilot I live in Florida I am based out of Cleveland, I work out of Cleveland. I pay Florida taxes.

Exactly I don't pay Florida income tax and nor would Rolle. He has maintained Florida residency, taxes are determined by residence not where you work.

Not so, at least not in NY, they tax income earned in their fine state no matter what, in fact NY has audited radio host R Limbaugh for 5 consecutive years because he has a condo in NYC that he rarely uses, it is so bad that he completely severed ties with NYC and no longer travels there for work.

CA is also really bad for that, they literally have a Bureau in the CA State Tax office that tracks athletes who travel to CA to ply their trade in their sport, they then prorate their stay and bill the player for taxes.

Wrong here, you live in NJ and work in NY, you pay taxes in both.

Now maybe each state is different, that I don't know.

Yeah, but you get it back come tax time, the state can cry all they want, but they have no right to determine your residence. I had it happen to me because I have a place in Cleveland where I am based. They started taking Ohio tax out of my check. I submitted proof of Florida Residency when I filed a Ohio State Tax Return and the refunded 100% of what was with held. That is why the majority of athletes live in Florida or Texas. Florida is full of MLB, NFL, PGA, Nascar, Indy Car, WWE, WWF, NBA and NHL athletes. Seriously a long time ago I worked for a company at St. Petersburg International Airport where private planes parked. You would not believe how many fly in that live in the area.

Plus, cities have income taxes as well, so they are taxed were they live, and taxed in the town they work in, then taxed by the State.

Sect is quite right about the calculator malfunction...or wrong about Free Agents only signing for the most money...

The linked article explains that there is a Jock Tax, specifically aimed at visiting pro athletes.

My bad I thought you were saying it was on your last post. Did you catch the final paragraph? Here it is

Overall, the Tax Foundation argues, nonresident taxes are a wash for the 24 states with major league professional sports teams, because the tax and the accompanying credits basically cancel each other out. Some higher-tax states, such as California, come out as net winners, while some states lose out (and states like Washington and Florida, without a state personal income tax, stand above the fray

Seems like a crazy bloophole law California tried to cram down everyones throat. Could you imagine if I had to pay tax to every state I fly into? Of the head ache!

I believe what they mean by FL and WA (and NV and TN) standing above the fray is "...they don't collect that tax.." Rolle will still get whacked in the NE because they DO collect that tax, the player can claim a tax credit, however with personal income taxes so high already, they still end up paying tens of thousands (if not more) in tax payments in the Northeast than in FL.

Filling a return in every state they play a game in is nutz, but there is no end to taxation.

Heck, look at the property taxes AND City income taxes, NYC collects those..a practice that is common in that region.

Yeah that is just crazy! I did notice that it said it is something that not every state does on a consistent basis. I am sure it is a lets worry about it if they come after it mentality the players and their reps take. Not to mention most examples that article and a few others gave were from 1998-2003 maybe legislation has changed.

All I know is I was based in Newark for about 15 months, every trip I flew started there and ended there. Not to mention 100's of times just transitioning the hub, I have never paid 1 cent of any NJ tax. I would think a state with a airline based in one of their cities would come after us if they could.

When I got dinged for Ohio State Income TAx it was because of an error my companies payroll department made when I changed bases. I filed prrof of residence Drivers License and got 100% of the money back.
