I would imagine the achievements aren't worth much on the Xbox side. On the PS3 side they're bronze trophies. (The system is bronze-silver-gold-platinum.)
I dont think the game's linearity for about 25 or so hours is a big deal, FFX was linear for most of the game, until you get the airship. And that was a great game.
So far it's much more linear than FFX. It's literally been straight lines so far. No deviations, no towns, no nothing.
The map doesn't lie. Also, I don't think there are any "towns" in the standard JRPG mold. Cocoon IS the town.
Official play time 6h 2m The story is making a lot more sense now as I know what they're talking about. I took some initiative and read through some of the in-game datalogs. Most people won't go that far though. The story is still Anime-corny, but getting better. The game still plays like a book... No choices, one direction.
So I googled "Final Fantasy XIII X-Box 360/PS3 Comparison... It has to look much better in motion than that on the 360.
I'm pretty sure the 360 one is from the in-motion game and the ps3 one is a pre released screenshot.... read, perfect.
Doesn't make sense to me that someone with access to the 360 build wouldn't also have access to the PS3 version.
Its not that they dont have access to the PS3 build... Its that that's a pre released screen shot from the PS3 version.... So the PS3 shot was from Sq/En and the 360 one was from some guy playing to that part in the 1st area and clipped it from the vid he made
There isn't much difference between developer hardware and actual hardware these days. In the PS1/PS2 era, yeah, official shots looked better than the real game, because the developer hardware was superior. But these days, not so much. I'd be very surprised if the "real" PS3 version looked like that 360 shot.
How about this... This is from my cell phone of the screen (rotated the cam to get a good look at Lightning) and it doesnt even look as bad as that LOL
It's clearly a direct feed. Whether it's been captured well is another story. And I don't see the same types of image quality problems in your shot that I do on the 360 side of that comparison. There's some antialiasing problems on the hair, but that's it. At least, from what I can tell on my iPhone.
Eurogamer has reached the same conclusion as me: the 360 version of FF13 isn't as good as the PS3 version, but it's mainly due to S-E and not differences between the consoles. There's unused space on the discs that could have allowed for less lossy video compression, for example. If you have a choice, get the PS3 version.
As per Joystiq's review, it looks like the game gets mega awesome later... Much f'n later LOL http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/05/review-final-fantasy-xiii/
There are a few more comparison shots and vids in this article http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-final-fantasy-xiii-face-off
The numbers obviously dont lie... But looking at the game... Even in the video they showed http://www.eurogamer.net/videos/digitalfoundry-final-fantasy-xiii-xbox-360-ps3-comparison it really isnt a huge difference in motion.
Just reserved my PS3 version of FF13. Even got sweet-talked into reserving the hardcover guide. What the hell, it's pretty.
Desides I was talking about you, not mor. BUT I just cant read. I thought you said you received your copy on ps3 today but now i realize you said reserved.
Okay, that explains it. Yeah, I plunked money down today. I didn't actually get the game yet, because unlike Mor, I don't have a parrot on my shoulder.
Whoever made your avatar needs to Photoshop a Cap'n Crunch hat on your head and a parrot on your left shoulder. Just make it official.
http://www.eurogamer.net/videos/digitalfoundry-final-fantasy-xiii-xbox-360-ps3-comparison i cant see a difference AT ALL.
They scaled the video down below either version's native resolution. It eliminates whatever differences might arise from the resolution changes. Also hides jaggies and other visual artifacts like that. Rely on the high-res screenshot comparisons, not the video.
It looks fantastic on the 360. You will not look at it and say "man this looks like crap" over a few more lines of resolution LOL
Status update - Official play time 12h 21m The battle system is really starting to come together. Early on it's very empty. Not being able to give commands to other party members makes you feel crippled at first. But as the game progresses and more powers are unlocked, the big scheme of the battle system starts to formulate (remember when the Gambit system in XII started to show it's genius?). Is it the best jRPG system? I don't think so. But it's enjoyable now. The story is still laughable. I'm still playing based on a notion that I'm getting from reviews that something happens and in an instant the game goes from this weird not good but not bad thing I'm playing into a real masterpiece. I am enjoying myself... Essentially this is the overall purpose of a game. So far so good, but still nothing to write home about. I can't help but feel like XII was a finer well oiled machine than this is. Everything from the look/feel and art style to the voice acting in XII seemed better.
Status Update - Game time 20h 16m The story is still ok at best. The gametrailers people said that around 15 and a half hours in, something happens and the story turns epic and it all comes together. It all does come together... but I'd hardly rank it up there with the others in the series. 4, 6, 7, 9, 10 and 12's stories all crush this one. It just tries too hard to be uber deep. They have a terrible naming convention for things that are regularly referenced and it is just difficult to follow. Maybe it was lost in translation somewhere... I dunno. Not saying it's a bad game. But at 20+ hours in I can safely say that this is the worst Final Fantasy in a long time. Still a lot better than the other 20 jRPGs available on the 360. But comparing against other FF's just isn't fair. The battle system has grown on me (as previously stated). But I think I still prefer FF12, FFX, Lost Odyssey, or Blue Dragon's systems over it. I'm sure other will disagree... Bu personally I think the loss of control leaves too much in the CPU's hands. Overall good game. I'd give it an 8 if I rated it today. Must buy? Not sold on it yet. But a solid jRPG. I'll be more specific when I beat it.
Three hours away from the official release. Anyone besides me going to nab this game at midnight? I hear there are a LOT of preorders, and it's starting to look like FF13 could be a million-seller by the end of the week. That's pretty amazing considering that Bad Company 2 just came out, Heavy Rain is still going strong, and God of War 3 is due next week. Oh, and there's that Ace Attorney Investigations game that apparently only I care about. Anyone want to guess how many copies will be sold?
Mine shipped from Amazon today, but I won't get a crack at it until Saturday. My BF:BC2 and Heavy Rain are still wrapped, and I have GOW3 pre-ordered as well. ugh...
xer0, your image doesn't work. Upload it to somewhere like imageshack.us, then repost it. I'm about 3 hours into the game, and I understand where mor was coming from with his initial posts. The game drops you right into the middle of an event without explaining the backstory. Undefined terms are batted about and the whole thing is pretty confusing... for a few minutes. The game has what's called a Datalog, which is basically a summary of the story up to the point you're at, plus enemy stats and things like that. Reading the Datalog is pretty much mandatory to understand what the hell is going on. In a way, it reminds me of Xenosaga, which was criticized because you were forced to use the in-game story reference to learn the meaning behind the series' original terms, like "D.M.E. Addiction" and "Unus Mundus Network." FF13 is very much the same way for the first little while. I have to say the battle system is a nice little reconfiguring of the standard Final Fantasy battle style. It's not revolutionary, just evolutionary, but that's fine. I particularly like the way the ATB Gauge has been reimagined. That thing's been dying for some sprucing-up after it was introduced in FF4. Going to finish up the area I'm at and then hit the sack. I'm very much looking forward to seeing how the story unfolds. I'll give Nomura some credit, the man can imagine some pretty involving worlds. He just isn't quite sure how to introduce us to those imaginary settings.
just got back from the midnight release. had over 150 people pick it up. I was ringing people out for over an hour. and almost everyone of them bought a guide with it. Crazy stuff.
xer0, yeah, it works now. Rule of thumb when it comes to linking images from someone else's server: don't. Anyway, the 360 version definitely lacks the same fidelity as the PS3 version. Not that the 360 version is bad, but there's clearly a difference. I don't see how this game doesn't smash the million mark by the weekend.
I'm glad to read this LOL I was worried than maybe I'm slow and didn't get it. I was waiting for you to come in here and say "I get it! The story is simple"
