http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/03/12/lions-avril-doesnt-think-vanden-bosch-took-his-job/ I remember the Dolphins were rumored to be very interested in drafting him back in 2008. What would you trade for him?
He could be, but if he is directly behind Bosch on the line they'll need a backup. He (Bosch) can't play every down like he used to most likely, and if they drafted him in the 3rd they're obviously hoping he pans out into something. If they trade him I doubt it will be for less than where they drafted him since it was only 2 years ago
I remember watching him in the cone drills at the combine and was really impressed. He's a real speedster. In some ways he looks like JT did when he was young. What would I trade for him...? Pat White lol...
Nothing about that article suggests he'll be traded. In fact, it would be quite foolish of Detroit to do so. They're so thin at every position, and Avril is a young guy who still has potential. Millen isn't running the show up there anymore. They're actually making halfway decent personnel decisions, though the contract given to Burleson would suggest otherwise.
If we're going to trade for a OLB that's not really available I would much rather trade for Lamar Woodley. He's already been playing in a 3/4 and has 29 sacks in 3 seasons. Seriously though, what motivation is there for the Lions to trade him away? Also what is it about Avril that suggests he's a better option at this point than Cameron Wake, that we would give up a draft pick for him?
1. Woodley compared to Avril is a world of difference in availability. 2. The Lions may not feel he's large enough to be their preferred DE. 3. He's not replacing Cameron Wake. 4. He's produced in the NFL and would not cost a high pick to acquire.
The only trade I could see would be Hilliard for Avril straight up, we won't pay a #3 for Avril, and the Lions need a Rb who can do a bit of everything that isn't over 30.
I would consider Ted Ginn for Avril. A 4th is also reasonable as it keeps the high picks available for other targets. They seem keen on drafting a WR and TE in combo at 2 and 3 this year, which means that FS may be ignored and the first round pick is likely an OLB. At NT perhaps just a late pick. We have to see how free agency winds down but I'm fairly sure they've decided to go with the draft for their receiving threats. Something like Taylor Price and Jimmy Graham.
To steep a price for a guy who is not a Day 1 starter, we "know" Ginn can top 2k all purpose yds, the only thing that is known about Avril is...they signed Kyle Vanden Bosch..
I'd say Avril has done more in two years than Ginn Jr. has. 790 and 420 with almost no TD production compared to eleven sacks. The eleven sack guy is the greater commodity.
2k in 07, 1800 in 09, and that is eleven "career" sacks from a 4-3 rush end, hardly noteworthy, put it this way, Ginn's 2 TD's set a record, Avril is fighting for his job..
Ginn Jr. is even lower on the todem-pole. I could care less about his return statistics. That doesn't stop me from adding a talented 23 year old pass rusher. He's been in the league two years what's the point of pointing out career sacks? Ginn Jr. is nothing special as a returner either at least right now. Other than the Jets game his numbers are not good.
So one year matters that much? Ginns only been in the league 3 years as compared to 2 for Avril. Ginn has had a lot more impact in games then Avril has
That's simply not true though. All because you see Ginn Jr. running around like a ballerina producing below average numbers for his number of snaps and average return numbers doesn't mean that equates to Avril who relative to how much he's played has been a decent young defensive end. Speed rushers are worth more than 4th WRs with some return promise that's been seen in one game.
Its a lot eaiser to see the negative impact of a WR rather then a DE that is invisable in the pass game and getting blown up in the run game..
Exactly, not that Ginn won't have stiff competition at Wr and Kr this year, he has proven he can produce chunk plays including roasting D REvis on MNF, all Avril has ever done is..well...not much of anything really. And that is why all the typing in the world is not going to trade Ted Ginn jr for Cliff Avril.
I fail to see how solid numbers for a young defensive end are not worth much of anything really. 23 year old speed rushing defensive ends with promise don't grow on trees. KR, PR, fourth WRs do. Avril has not been a minus in the run-stopping department in his career at 4-3 DE. That bodes well for a move to SOLB with his speed.
Very explosive WRs that at any point can burn an entire secondary do not grow on trees dispite what you think. Ginn has had his fair share of troubles and hasn't produced like we all have hoped, but he still has done a lot more promising things then Avril
What's with the lambasting of Avril? Sacks are not that easy to come by in the NFL. Run-stopping speed rushers once again are still harder to find. For all his speed Ginn Jr. isn't a plus on the field at WR. Whats Avril done that doesn't show promise? Is he supposed to produce a jaw-breaking hit to show promise? At least he has a former top DE starting in front of him instead of an undrafted free agent, a journeyman type WR in Camarillo, and a 4th round rookie draft pick.
Also, I'm not saying I wouldn't want Avril, I'm just saying we could go about aquiring him better then giving up Ginn IMO.
I would trade a 4th. By the way if we draft a WR we'll have Camarillo, Bess, Hartline, that draft pick, Pat White trying to find a position and Ginn Jr. I'm not sure Ginn Jr. even is assured of a roster spot. He likely is but we'll see.
We're not lambasting anyone. But for all of Ted Ginn Jr.'s faults (whether understated or overexaggerated), he has actually done more for Miami than Avril has done for Detroit.
This isn't about "unbridled love and support" for Ginn. This is about what would be the right price for Cliff Avril. And quite frankly, I wouldn't trade Ted Ginn for a DE/OLB that, despite being a speed rusher, only produced 11.5 sacks. But that's just me.
If he is available for trade despite being on a team that is thin at both OLB and DE, then maybe we should be wary of acquiring him. Edit: And yes, only! Cameron Wake has 5.5 sacks, and he hasn't even played as many snaps this season as Avril did.
What? On a team with mediocre WRs Ted Ginn doesn't even have a starting spot. He can't take the PR job away from Devone Bess and only due to injury did he get the KR job back.
