No typos here. As per ESPN's Adam Shefter: http://twitter.com/Adam_Schefter That's a big contract. It can max out at about $24.5 million meaning Joey will be making on average between $6 and $8 million a year. How is he still worth that bank?
I guess they think all that money is going to effectively plug up the hole in his face that talks a lot.
Well good for him, but talk about overpaying! Seems to me that Arizona got themselves in trouble with bad contracts before. Doesn't look like they learned much.
Huh, and I was called all manner of imbecile for suggesting we hang onto Porter and pay his 1 million dollar bonus because he had trade value. Cardinals agreed...hmm seem to recall saying something about them...
I have to think that they tried to trade him. And nobody bit (or bit hard enough). Regardless of whether we paid the bonus, we weren't going to hang on to him. And teams knew that. So why trade? No real details on the contract, but I bet there's not much guaranteed and it's probably (typically) backloaded. So I don't know how much of that $17M (or $24M) he'll actually see. I think either way though, Arizona way overpaid.
i think the cards got the short end of the stick, but also lost alot of money . goodbye joey, hello karlos the phins win !!!
Whatever trade value he had, Porter blew that up with his mouth and ridiculously classless behavior.....and IMO he did it by design so that he could just get his release, go where he wanted and renegotiate. Get some new signing bonus money No one was going to give us jack for that guy...... IMO anyway Love seeing him go to a team like Arizona that will be lucky to hit .500 next year....it's exactly how he deserves his career to end.
I don't see how they agreed. They signed him for less than what his contract with us was. We did the right thing getting rid of a locker cancer that didn't want to be here anymore.
His salary was a one yr 5 million deal, they could have cut him after the season and before the salary cap was reinstalled, if it were reinstalled in 2011. They could have rented JP for a yr at 5 million, instead they gave him 3/17 million.
This is probably the one player i wouldnt have minded gone to a division rival cause he would have talked trash the week before we played them, guranteed a win, and then embarassed himself.
Porter could have a Chad Pennington type year if he feels he has something to prove. But chances are he will just run his mouth and take plays off like usual.
Didn't you hear....we did trade him. By the way just because someone spends money on a player does not mean they will trade picks. Especially to a team that everyone knows they are going to have to cut the player cause he's acting like a jackass.
I still dont think they would have traded for him, but was hoping I was wrong on that, oh well we will never now.....Ariz was the only team that wanted him.... Dude 17.5 over 3 years!?!?!?!?!?!?! then add another 7 plus if he hit bonuses!?!??!!?? 25.5 possibly....you are talking like around 8.5 a year!!!!
glad it's az instead of buffalo. you know if he went there he would have his best season ever with our luck!
Hey, at least Doughy is closer to Las Vegas where he might be able to get into trouble again, you know...if he sees his pal Levi...
Porter will probably have a good year next year, I've got a strong feeling about it. I think most of last year was probably attributed to him throwing a tantrum, and being injured. That being said, I think that'll be the last year of gas he's got in the tank, he won't make year 3 of that contract.
9 sacks, seriously FY, he was the best FA OLB available, who else was there? And a hidden point is, if JP was worth 17 million, what is JT's worth? Jt had a much much better year, the "stats" won't show it, however JT was head and shoulders above Porter. .
Good luck to him. P.S. I'm still not sure why we should care what a team pays for a player in an uncapped year. Am I missing something?
Yea but also add in a one million dollar bonus too to the draft pick compensation they would have given and all of a sudden its a lopsided deal for us.
No, because the Cards are paying him the 1 million dollar bonus in his salary already, at worst it would have been a push. Porter's sack number was one less than Julius Peppers, but of course the other numbers like pressures were better: 10 sacks/33 pressures/10 Qb hits Porter: 9 sacks/11 pressures/5 hits All in Peppers favor, the difference is the 64 million dollar contract vs 24 million, Porter is not as good as Peppers but the gap is not 40 million dollars worth, Porter is 80% of the player that Peppers was in 2009 imho.
Just stupid money for an over the hill big mouth like porter. This is the year he had either hamstring or knee issues that keep him out of training camp. One thing we do not know is the amount of guaranteed money and his signing bonus. That tells it all. A 3 year deal means nothing without guaranteed money and a larger signing bonus.
You mean the Madden Challenge right? Joey Porter is not even close to Julius Peppers. Peppers is an All-Pro with commitment issues. Any given year Peppers can get 17 sacks. The guy just doesn't try.
Bro, I don't play Madden, and "yes" Porter is comparable to Peppers stats wise, he falls nicely into the 80/20 rule when compared to Peppers.
I was actually hoping he'd sign with the Redskins so that he could scrimmage against Levi Brown.. but 1-on-1 this time. He served his purpose for the Fins in 08, but I suspect his next season will more resemble an 09 where his mouth was writing checks his play play couldn't cash. Good riddance thug!
Numbers are not indicators of talent or ability all the time. Julius Peppers right now is better than Porter ever was. Peppers's problem is a lack of effort. Joey Porter's best year ever was 2008. Looking at stats, however, Joey Porter has 529 tackles and 92 sacks. Peppers came in the league 3 years after Porter and has 381 tackles and 81 sacks. Peppers averages 48 tackles and 10 sacks a year. Still in his prime you can expect him to keep that up for at least three more years. In three years which will make them equivalent, Peppers should have around 525 tackles and 111 sacks. These stats are assuming that Peppers didn't just need a change of scenery to play at his full potential.
