Well, we are in the slow period of the year, the Big Name Fa's have all signed, leaving scratch and dent FA's and lower tiered FA's, here is my take on who is left feel free to add your own: -Rashad Jeanty-SOLB-Bengals have him tendered at 1.176 million with no draft pick compensation, but the odd thing is: They liked him heading into 09, but drafted Rey M. Darren Sharper-Dolphins need a FS, Sharper is a Vet with a short learning curve: A couple of other names: Tye Hill, we need some veteran competition at the nickelback slot with the departure of Nate Jones to Denver Mark Roman-ex Mike Nolan safety, he would be a last resort type of signing but would know the defense and not be overly pricey Adewale Ogunleye-"if" we lose JT, he would be a nice fillin as a nickel DE and maybe part time stand up OLB. Derrick Burgess-ditto for Burgess who is younger than Ogun David Martin-DMart has not gotten much interest in the FA market, if healthy he is a seam busting Te that we need Feel free to add your own, and do keep in mind, this is merely for fun as the Front Office has more than likely spent the money they intended to spend and additions now would have to come cheaply.
good list padre. i think we may possibly get one more player but could just as well be done for now. i expected three fa pickups. we got two. I dont think Burgess or Ogun are on our radar but I could see the others
Well, with those two I'm think of "what if" Jason Taylor signs elsewhere? Our 4 man nickel rush line was a success last yr because they couldn't double Cam Wake, if we lose JT and just put "some guy" over there like Phil Merling, who hasn't developed, there won't be much of a passrush on 2nd and 3rd and longs. Those two are the best remaining passrushers who are pure UFA's.
I think the FO is watching the Adalius Thomas situation in New England. Oh and did Sam Hurd get a tender?
Yes Hurd was tendered. As for Adalious Thomas, he apparently has said he wants to play for the Jests. I though about Lavernuos Coles, but he is more of a slot Wr and we have plenty of those. Wonder a bit about Mo Stovall down in Tampa.
He had a knee problem that lingered and he wasn't ready for the start of the season and wound up being released.
Not sure we'll plug any holes at DE or OLB before the draft .... FO will stand pat there, then go for the JT 'Plan B' (or someone else) ... just like last year ....
More or less, but signing a player pre Draft opens up more possibilities in the draft. The phins will need another passrusher to pair with Cam Wake, that is a fact, and Phil Merling has shown -0- signs of being "that guy".
I actually think Merling played very well in spots last year. He has alot of talent but I do agree he is not the pass rusher that we need but I like him in the mix at DE
Sure, it is not that I dislike Phil Merling it is if Wake is drawing a double team, Merling is not the guy to take advantage of the situation, he is not that sort of player. OGun, however, is.
padre, again agree .... and i have stated the past 2 years that our #1 need is/was a game changing OLB .... we will draft and OLB no later than rd 2 ... and probably more than 1 in this draft. i just doubt that will sign either a DE or OLB prior to the draft at this point. Though we could readily use another DE ... what do you think, if anything, will Baker bring to the table this year? Dotson, Francis ??
Maybe. The Dolphins absolutely need "JT Insurance", if he signs elsewhere the nickel passrush would be crippled if we don't have a proven veteran to man the DE slot across from Cam Wake Would you be happy if we headed into 2010 with Phil Merling left to defeat man on man blocking? I wouldn't, imho that would be very foolish, Wake is good, a double teamed Wake with a schmoe at LDE would be consistently ineffective. We could use a DT who can create pressure as well, right now our only proven g uys are Wake and Starks. Dotson hasn't shown very much in two years, Baker is raw with a good motor and Ikeama Francis is anyone's guess, he has a world of athleticism though. Ditto Bryan Johnston. Such a motley crew is no substitute for JT or even Joey Porter..for real. Say it outloud "Ryan Baker will have 10 sacks this year" Would you go into 2010 thinking that?
Padre, no - not comfortable where we are at DE or OLB .... but i see OLB as much more of a concern - which is why i see it as a multiple pick position this year. JT is a safety net -- and maybe the FO is counting on that a bit too much ... guess we'll see how it plays out. I will not miss Porter at all ..... was not happy when we signed him. Did i like everyone else love his tremendous season - sure ... i will continue to believe that a stud OLB opposite Wake, will help more than a better LDE (and JT isn't really that guy - but may have to do). at DT, we can hold what we have to be truthful, IMHO ... Starks, Soliai and McDaniel can hold it together until Fergie can get back on the field. Of course, this takes us out of a true 3-4 NT type, since Soliai is more like Starks than anything like Fergie. I like Thomas or Joseph (probably more likely) as draft picks ...
What happened with Rashad Jeanty? I know he came for a visit, but that is the last I've heard of it. I'm not real interested in Ogunleye. I'd be interested to bring Martin in for a look and see where he is health wise. I'd like to get Jeanty in here and start him at SOLB on 1st and 2nd down.
He's shopping himself around, I'd bet our offer was right in the Eric Green territory last yr, maybe two years, 4 million, 1 million signing bonus. I agree though, I'd love to have him in Miami, just to have a proven Veteran on the Lb corps.
Adewale Ogunleye before you tell me about entertaining that idea came out of indiana we developed him as a 4-3 DE bad fit now
Perfect fit now Killahp, we need a nickel De to pair with Wake for 2nd and 3rd and longs, a proven Vet, OGun, Burgess and maybe even Greg Ellis fit that bill.
Mike Nolan's nickel schemes are different from Pasqualoni, in Nolan's nickel both DE are standing up or 2 pt stand. Ogunleye always plays with a hand on the ground.
