Agreed, I like him, actually alot, but head to head if we did have a 5th rd pick to use on a Wr, and it were he or Joe Webb...if Webb's 4.4 was legit I'd take Webb. Imho, Williams is one of those guys who if they were playing BBall, would be "one and done"..
Webb may be this years Ramses Barden. His footwork and route running is about as raw as I've ever seen and he does not separate well. He's a transition player, I know, but I don't know if I would take him. I don't think we need another guy who can't run routes and separate (re: Patrick Turner).
seems fast and tall, though not very quick. Slow when trying to cut defenders. a fine gambling with a mid-late rd pick.
I was looking at him as a Josh Cribbs type Alen. With Syracuse Mike, the talent has never been an issue.
It was his first play at Wr in 3 yrs, and what I think they are looking for is a Wr prospect who has size and can move Ted Ginn off of kick returns.
http://www.nfldraftscout.com/ratings/dsprofile.php?pyid=67973&draftyear=2010&genpos=WR Funny, Draftscout has William's highest draft position as #3-#4 rd pick. His downside is..UDFA...that is quite a split... http://www.nfldraftscout.com/ratings/dsprofile.php?pyid=77188&draftyear=2010&genpos=WR Webb is a 5-6 or a UDFA.
I'm not sure about that. I don't think he would have a huge impact right away. I think he could make an impact in the red zone something Turner should have been used as.
and then finally the incident where he went to the casino when the coach stated implicitly to all the players not to. love those low risk/high reward guys. Normally i wait til the 5th/6th to try and find them but williams has the kind of talent you take a chance on in the fourth. Love rooting for kids to get their stuff together especially when its to our benefit.
So, having 2 middle of the road WRs is reason enough to not take a stud like Dez? Soundest reasoning I've seen around here in a coon's age. Anthony Fasano is not a below average TE and as a blocker he is near the top of the TEs in the league, so we don't need Jermaine Gresham either then.
did you ever think that they just would rather invest the big money in the trenches and on defense? If that's their strategy, then paying a huge contract to Marshall just isn't going to happen.
I'm starting to agree. I think it's arrogance, and classic degenerate gambler mentality. Pass up on the sure thing and go for the gamble.
I tend not believe anything I hear about the draft until the players name is called at the podium. EDIT: I see a couple saying this FO is arrogant because they aren't going after Marshall. I don't see it. This team has a TON of holes to fill, it's not like we are 1 player away. I want WR badly, just like the everyone else. But we need a complete overhaul at LB (except Dansby), Safety, and a NT. So filling anyone of those positions will a stud that will be cheap ( relatively ) is perfectly valid in my eyes and not that arrogant.
hmmmmmm sounds alot like a guy in the Rockies region, wears blue and orange.....whats the differennce...??!?!?! again this, and the Incognito signing gives me hope that they would take on Marshall, the FO isnt stupid, they all know that Marshall solves all their problems at WR, they know that doing the Marshall plan, is better than drafting Bryant, or this gee....I dont care if he looks goods....he played in that power conference of the Big East!!!!! not sold on him....unless he was their in the 6/7th
I really think the main reason we aren't going after Marshall is the price tag. Draft picks, plus salary, plus a major headache. Not saying I agree with them not going after him, but I think those factors are just too much (in this regimes eyes) to make a push for him.
IMO, that is one reason. The other, from what others here have said, is he is basically a hiccup away from a long term suspension. Not only costing us a high draft pick, likely a 1st, having to pay him a huge contract, then what if he ends up getting suspended? A leopard doesn't change his spots. I see no indication that coming to the Dolphins would turn Marshall into an eagle scout.
I suppose when it comes to Marshall - or alternatively, the FO mining WR diamonds in the rough, it boils down to a matter of perspective. While some might believe that Marshall is the sure thing and it's gambling to bypass him, I'm in the camp that would depict this as being "prudent." Conversely, IMO, the definition of "gambling" is throwing a valuable 1st that can be otherwise used to fill a hole with a potential franchise player, and a Brinks truck full of guaranteed money at a player with a history of both on and off field anti-social behavior in proximity to South Beach, -who, depending on the side of the bed Goodell woke up on, could well be 1 more infraction away from an extended suspension.
It puzzles me why people keep coming back to Marshall even though obviously other teams could use a #1 WR yet none are jumping on the Marshall bandwagon. Is Miami the only team who could use Marshall or are there reasons other teams aren't willing to give up a 1st for him? Could other teams be aware of reasons to not get Marshall that we are not or are other teams just sitting back waiting to see if Miami makes the trade before they make their move? Marshall is a good WR but do Parcells and company believe he is too big a risk to invest a 1st round pick on as apparently other teams do?
Perhaps all the teams know Marshall has some stricks against him in the drug performance area. Things that are not common knowledge at fans level. IDK why teams are being shy with him.
Trust me, if Williams didn't pan out because of off field issues and we lost 800K, or if marshall didn't pan out, we would lose 10 million. BIG difference in my opinion. The risk isn't anywhere near the same. Not to mention, yes Marshall is a proven elite talent. No question. If he came in played 6 games great for us, caught everything and had a bunch of TDs, then became Henne's favorite go to target, then we would all be super happy. The scary part is our offense would for certain become dependant. If in Week 6 he got all pissy and had a tantrum and got suspended or benched by Sparano (who wouldn't put up with much, ie see joey porter) then we have an offense that would have to retool after moving the chains via brandon marshall all year. Now that guy is lost. See how well denver performed mid season when Marshall was benched. 2 completely different offenses. That wouldn't be the case out of the gate with Williams, he would have to earn everything he gets, including the respect from teamates, playing time from coaches and continue to prove it throughout the year, not just in TC, OTA's, pre season and the first half of the regular season. All for about 10 million less up front. And it won't cost us a first round draft pick. The upside is that he could be developed into a good reciever if the scouts are right with his talent level. So ideal long term, you keep in under control, develop his talent internally, build trust with him and then we have our own elite reciever and it cost us a 3rd or 4th round pick. And about 800k. Not a bad mode of thinking if you ask me. Teams that overpay for people, beyond just money tend to set the franchise back if that player doesn't pan out. Not to mention they are just looking at Williams, which at this point only tells me their doing their due diligence of all the possible ways they can address teh WR position. -Brandon Marshall or similar FA (Anquan Boldin) -Take Dez Bryant at 12, if he's even there at 12 -Take someone else at 12 - Go another direction at 12 and look at raw talent in later rounds (3-5) it's all part of a process for seeing all the fallout and risk associated with any decision you might make. If the decision works out whats the risk, if that player doesn't work out whats the risk. To me all this means is they are searching out and evaluating every concievable fork in the road to determine which woudl be the best investment for teh risk they are assuming. Smart FO in my opinion. They haven't made the decision yet about our WR's. Just shopping right now. Also, the fact they weren't aggressive for Marshall is either a barganing tool, to see what the market will do or maybe Nolan advised them he can't be taught to be a team player. Who knows. They are obviously not desperate for him at this point, so time to look at other options.
Sooooooooo, just so I'm clear. People want us to make WR priority #1. We bring in a talented WR to be thorough and make sure we get an accurate bead on him. And you guys are pissed? Even though, you know for a fact, this is one of the most misdirection happy FOs in the league? Seriously, some fans remind me of an abusive husband who tells his wife, "I hit you because I love you."
A rare good highlight video not just some guy running in space. I like how he catches the ball, how he moves with the QB, his ability to track and make adjustments and fight in the air to come down with the ball.
I haven't read through the whole thread so maybe there is someone who said WR should be a #1 priority and then that same person also said that we shouldn't even look at Williams before the draft, but I doubt it. I personally don't think that drafting a player who makes big mistakes and continues to blame everybody else for them is a good risk in any round before the 6th or 7th. That is what I have seen from Williams, so I wouldn't be happy with drafting him before the 6th or 7th, but I would certainly want to speak with him before the draft. That conversation might make me want to risk a 4th or 5th on him or it may make me take him off my board entirely.
I say it's the main reason because...well, Richie Incognito. That dude came cheap. Marshall would not.
it is like who blinks first, nobody wants to give up a 1st rounder for him, so they will wait....teams want him, they dont want to give up the draft pick especially a first, but if somebody signs him to an offer sheet, I can see suddenly there will be movement on him... or in the end, they could all give up in him for this year, he rides his contract out, becomes a UFA next year, and a bidding war starts on him for the 2011 season....this time next year..
