Basically, the Seahawks gave up a #3 pick and millions of dollars for Charley Whitehurst based on...his preseason film... Tyler Thigpen can only increase his trade value the more he plays in the preseason, as can the plethora of Oline prospects already on the roster. Teams really do scour preseason film looking for players that can contribute, and they are willing to part with draft picks to acquire talent.
I'm surprised they didn't just trade with us, considering that Tyler Thigpen has shown in the past that he could lead an offense.
He has to show that whatever faults made him worth only a 5th rd pick have been overcome. For my money, the Olineman are a better value, imho maybe Murtha and Gardner should play Tackle this preseason from the 2nd qtr onwards.
They didn't give up a 3rd round pick, they never even had one. The Seahawks and the Chargers just swapped 2nd round picks, so it's not like we would have gotten anything good from them if they wanted Thigpen.
I see what you're saying Padre, but this thread title seems to infer it's even a question if he'll play in the preseason. Why wouldn't he? Pennington will still be rehabbing his shoulder so he would see very limited reps. Tyler Thigpen will play plenty in preseason.
Who says we trade him? Henne isn't quite proven yet, Pennington isn't the future and White has shown nothing as a passer. If anything, White needs to play this preseason to show he wasn't more than a gimmick player and possibly could at least net us something in return on our investment.
Well think about MB, Henne will start, Penny will play, Thiggy will play, who knows if White will play, but who comes in for relief of Henne? Chad Pennington or Tyler Thigpen?
I dont get all of the talk about trading Thigpen. I dont think he is going ANYWHERE. He is our backup. White will end up on the practice squad, if he is eligible. If he isnt............who knows. What I AM sure of is...........Thigpen wasnt acquired to be traded away. He has a future here. It wouldnt surprise me if he is given a legitamate shot at the starting job in preseason.
My Gawd I am sick of posts suggesting we trade Thigpen. What the hell is wrong with having talented young depth at the QB position??? The Chargers got a 3rd in 2011 and a swap of 2nds this year. I would not take that for Thigpen. I very seriously doubt anyone would offer that much anyway. So, again I say... NO to trading Tyler Thigpen!!!
its here, somewhere in the middle http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/writers/don_banks/03/25/meetings/index.html?xid=si_nfl
One of the differences between Whitehurst situation and Thigpens, is that Thigpen has a pro starting resume, albeit only 11 games, but he has started. So him playing more in the preseason, other than to see what he can do with our offense won't really make a lot of difference most likely...
Thigpen will get plenty of reps in the preseason .... especially since it is a competition of sorts for the backup .... we aren't sure how that's going to work out -- such as a CP trade. before we entertain trading CP, the FO has to be very confident in Thigpen ... again, they want to win this year -- so unless Thigpen shows he is fully capable to backup without a drop in performance .... then we aren't trading CP either. Thigpen isn't going anywhere -- UNLESS he underperforms during OTCs .... if that happens -- then it is possible he gets traded. but before anything happens, we need to see CP shoulder, and Thigpens progress.
For all the heat this FO takes for not addressing WR, safety(thus far), they've done a damn good job locking down the PREMIUM positions: QB, LT, pass rusher, CB Lets hang on to Thigpen, he put up big numbers in a pretty bad system as a rookie. Very nearly led a double digit comeback vs Steelers. Dude's a stud.
Ok, they get a bye on S, since it's obvious they've at least tried to get a veteran in here. But where is this pass rusher you're thinking of ?? Certainly not Dansby because that isn't his strength or position. At any rate, the offseason isn't over yet, so it's too soon to beat them up very badly. I am concerned they didn't address the play-maker position, be that a WR, TE or someone who scares D's...
keep Thigpen we have only three legitimate QB's & Pennington days are important in the process but numbered what if, Thigpen wins the start don't think it will happen but it could & we'd be Sainted again keep Thigpen let the three of them compete Competition is the Elixir of Success
this would make sense, except for the fact that Thigpen was a starter for the Chiefs. The film already exists. Why do you think we traded for him? Your logic should have pointed to Pat White, not Thigpen.
lost Drew Brees to the Saints w/ a very bad QB call from another Frontoffice (we were "Sainted" & have suffered & continue to suffer the consequnces)
Hey lets showcase White during the preseason, wait would that help or hurt us? Anyway I am with the people who want to keep Thigpen,I like what I have seen from the guy and he can be a great backup that can win a few games. After Henne I think Thigpen is the most safe qb on the roster,White I don't think is that effective of a qb and Pennington is still rehabbing the shoulder and will probably get a chance to start for another team next year unless we trade him this year.
Thigpen will be here longer than Penny. That's the way I see it.He's young, has experience, should make Henne better by breathing down his neck, has a good arm, etc. Seems like Penny is the security blanket this season in case something where to go wrong and will not imo,be around by the end of the season,he's here as a teacher on the bench for Henne's sake, that's all. I see CP being traded by the end of the season(salary and all) for a draft pick(s)
The only way we really can improve trade value is to showcase one of the three in the preseason. Think of it this way, "if" we were looking to trade Pennington, he would have to play a couple of qtrs just to show his shoulder is 100%, if Thiggy, he would have to play against opponent's #1 defensive players. As for White..not anytime soon, imho he will be the developmental Qb, or they will have to move him to Running Back.
i don't think we are looking to trade CP .... BUT if Thigpen proves that he is capable, it makes that a possibility. this FO wants to go into this season with 2 starting caliber QBs, just like we are doing at several positions. there are 2 big IFs regarding our backup ... how is CPs shoulder, and where is Thigpen in his ability to run our offense. Those 2 answers will sort out our backup situation and derivative COAs (such as trading CP or Thigpen). I believe the former vice the latter all things being equal, because CP will want a real opportunity to start if it exists. Thigpen would too, but Thigpen really has more value to us than CP, both present and future -- especially if we go out and get a legitimate WR.
I wouldn't be so certain, imho this year will be "back to basics" meaning not turning the ball over is such a priority that CP if healthy has a better than average shot at unseating Chad Henne.
Put me on the do not trade Thigpen list please. Henne could go down, and Pennington just can't stay healthy and might not be back to full strength until November. I am a firm believer that Pat White cannot run this offense and be counted on to win games.....
Disagree, if anything it will produce a faster start to the season. Besides..I've been waiting for you to say "Checkdown Chadwick" again. I find that hillarious.
i'm with JS on this one .... if CP is starting in any fashion minus an injury to Henne, then it is a serious problem - and throws our QB situation into the serious need category
It's "Chadley Checkdown".......jeez get it right...lol How on earth can you say it will produce a faster start? You mean like the 0-3 hole he provided Henne to climb out of last year? How is going back to Penny, anything but a step backwards? At this point wouldn't you agree that Pennington is nothing more than a Journeyman/mentor? Give the kid a chance......he showed some serious talent last year and that arm of his is something that this team has been needing. We need to get him some help, not replace him with a guy that throws the ball soft enough even Ginn can catch it.
A good back up like Thigpen is worth more to us than he would be to another team because really, he is not a good starter.
Based on my understanding of your theory and the premise of this thread, I would really prefer Pat White get a lot of reps in preseason then. He's the one we need to get rid of, not Thiggy. JMHO
That would be nice but I think we'd basically have to give him away compared to what he cost us....I can't see where many teams are going to seriously consider him as an option at QB. And certainly not one that would want to bet as much as we did on it. Any team that had interest would probably be looking at him as an all purpose prospect, developmental WR.....which is what I would rather do with him than give him away. He may not be much of an NFL QB but that kid is game....I'd like to see what else he can do. Try and get him the ball in space, make a play maker out of him.
