The thing is, while none of us can condone him or anyone else for drunk driving, and it's apparent that he was drunk driving, I'm curious as to how many other folks were out DD that night that didn't get their names in the media....Some have inferred that there is an epidemic of DD in the NFL. I say there is just as much DD reported in the NFL as there is in mainstream society, just that only the athletes with names get the notoriety. Some seem to act like this is a problem that only infects athletes. Well, it's not even close. On a Wednesday night road check site near Atlanta there were 27 DUI violations...a 5 hour check site wielded 27 DUIs. Now, not one of those folks got their names in the papers or on the internet. Who's kidding who to blame this problem on athletes ?? Just a thought to throw out there. Again, not condoning or approving of it, but it is happening throughout the general populous, not just to athletes...

I'm with you on not condoning this, but I don't think anyone is necessarily blaming athletes. The thing is that these athletes are supposedly larger role models for kids ("larger" in the sense that they have the ability to reach many more people than someone else who doesn't have that publicity; therefore, they can have a much greater impact, whether it's good or bad). So, while there are definitely others that have committed the same or even worse crimes, it's the athletes that seem to have a wider reach on the consequences of their actions.

Of course, the athletes also are more capable of getting a cab, with respect to their ability to afford it. So, it makes the decision not to do so even worse.

I agree with you as well, but my response was in regards to some of the threads, both here and in other sports forums regarding the NFL athletes as "an epidemic" of DD....but certainly these guys are role models, like it or not to our youngsters. The hope is that most youngsters have parents that are role models, and in a perfect world that's enough....we all know it's not exactly perfect and many kids don't have role model parents...that means that athletes, politicians, law enforcement, teachers and other civic leaders are left to fill those roles...When those people trip, it certainly has farther reaching consequences than that of the average joe...

Absolutely agree and very well put.

I guess I haven't read the threads and posts that you refer too. I tend to be quite selective on which ones I actually open and read. Maybe it's just my failure to (as of yet) renew my Club Level subscription. :wink2:

You are entirely correct. When a celebrity does something wrong it is newsworthy. So it makes good copy. If it were Sylvester P Smythe, local wastepaper basket repairman who was arrested in similar circumstances. No one outside those immediately involved would know or give it a second thought.

I knew an old log truck driver, friend of my dad, who used to take half a case of beer with him in his truck every day. Never had an accident or caused one. I think he was in his early 70s before he retired from driving. Since he seldom had less than a 12 hours a day driving, that works out to 1 beer an hour. He was just a natural driver I guess. Some of the stories I'd hear of his driving prowess were downright amazing.

I agree with you that this is an epidemic. It sucks that someone who appeared to be a stand up guy like RB made this decision. I know that numerous people will say that it is just a mistake, but please remember that most time you are caught drunk driving, it is not you first transgression.

i never said i didnt like ronnie just dont like the fact that he cant stay on the field and now he has been busted for driving around drunk

anyway what business of yours is it who i like and dislike
you didnt have a legitimate response to back up why you said i was the type of person to defend porter because you didnt have one
all you do is come in take cheap shots at me then hide just because i hurt your feelings about jason taylor

He doesn't need to be crucified for it, he made a mistake like we all have done or will do in our lifetimes, thankfully noone was hurt. If he does it again then fine berate him all you want but the guy has been a saint for his whole career including college so it's certainly not the norm for him. Hopefully he learned a lesson.

man, we really need to stop caring so much about what these guys do off the field. It's not our problem. We aren't Ronnie Brown. We aren't Ireland, Sparano, Parcells, or Ross. This is their problem.

I think what gets me is the short sightedness of it all. Right now Ronnies a devil, right? But it will be forgotten. I mean come on, we forgave RICKY WILLIAMS! He literally derailed our franchise over his personal problems and yet he still goes out there and plays football for us.

Ronnie won't do this again. Case dismissed. Move on.

The reason you'd probably choose to defend Porter is that you seem to have no respect for guys with class.......figured Porter would be your type of guy. Don't blame me, you earned it

Whats getting lost in all of this or at the very least twisted around is that you can support someone and still think that it is a 'big deal'. I have seen many of us come forward and lend our support to Ronnie. He's earned that support in our eyes because of the way he has handled himself throughout his career with the Dolphins.

This however doesn't mean that we don't recognize this as a 'big deal'. We understand the severity of the situation. We understand that people could have been injured or even killed. Continuing to point that out isn't going to make it any clearer to any of us. We already know this.

This doesn't mean that we shouldn't continue to support him and hope that he resolves any issue he has with alcohol. He's a smart kid and very respectful. I fully expect him to learn from this situation. Or at least I pray that he does.

Folks, a DUI is something that the NFL may be able to overlook without a suspension. Lying to a police officer in the course of an investigation is not. The OP is right. It gets worse -- much worse.

He did not hurt anyone so to me it's no big deal. The big deal NOW is to see if he learns from it. If he doesn't then he should get the book thrown at him. EVERYONE deserves second chances, third if need be. As long as no one is ever hurt by a persons stupidity.

By the way, I don't follow you around. I read almost every thread, and your posts require my replies. Like it or not...sorry!

Or is the police officer lying as well. I've personally had a couple of them lie to stretch the truth and help their case against me. I respect the law to the upmost and most likely Ronnie is the one who's totally wrong here but I'm just saying. Not all police are saints.

I was one of the huge Ricky bashers when he quit and for quite sometime after but YEP, I forgave him.

As for Ronnie not doing it again. When I used to drink I would drive all the time so I won't say Ronnie won't do it again but he does seem like a person that can learn a leason. That's what I choose to do. HOPE he learns well...

Never got caught, but in my younger years I drove drunk a few times, so I am not going to throw the first stone. Since about 1975 if I start to drink and am away from my home, I give someone my keys, and I don't have an NFL player's salary, but I am not the one who should judge.

no respect for guys with class really?
i have stated that jason taylor shouldnt be resigned because he is old. is it really disrespectful to believe that when that is how i truly feel. so far i guess i am right because he is not back with the dolphins
also i have stated that ronnie brown was stupid for driving drunk which is the truth. he got arrested for doing so

earned what? all i have done is state my opinion which i am entitled to and it rubs you the wrong way so you continue to take shots at me.

if i say that taylor has lost a step or brown lacks breakaway speed is that disrespecting a player. you need to have thicker skin there bro and stop worrying about how i feel about certain players.

This is A PRIME EXAMPLE for the reason the USA should just legalize weed.

People smoking weed won't wreck into you and kill your children (Alcoholic drivers will...), the worst they do is just pass up their exit, and the driver drives slowly and carefully while they make a u-turn...

You are 100 percent correct. In Ronnie's case, though, if they already have him dead to rights blowing a .16, why make up a story, especially since the driver of the other car that he allegedly almost hit would have to testify? He'd better get himself excellent legal counsel with lots of juice in the community.

This is just silly. All personal thoughts on legalizing weed aside, I seriously doubt legalizing it would at all impact the number of drunk driving fatalities. Those who drive drunk are going to do it whether or not weed is legal lol.
