That figure will change, for the better: Zach Thomas will retire, or be made to. No point in killing yourself for a game, no matter how much he'll be missed. Jason Taylor looks as though he is starting to become a parhia (sp) in the locker room. I understand he is frustrated, proud and tired, but it is what it is. keeping him will blow the team up. He is respected in the locker room, and his actions have affects. We need to get what we can for him and move on. Trent Green will be off the books. Keith Traylor will be too. We will be over 30 mill before the start of the next FA period I bet you.
Do we use it?! I'm just ready to use it! There's just so many solid FA's this year and we need to capitalize on them, and decide the worth/value of our current players. I think we really need to eval the entire franchise, not just threaten to do so.
I'm not a cap genius but i dont think it is as simple as your making it sound. I could be wrong but i dont think their cap numbers just out of no where dissappear. I know Marty Bookers will, thats 4 mill right there, but boy does our WR core look weak without him there. (Granted, they dont look too good WITH him there.)
I would use it on Asante Samuel. Sure, he is going to be expensive (possibly even outpacing Nate Clements) but I think he would solidify our cornerbacks in a big way. Think about a starting lineup of Will Allen and Asante Samuel. Goodman, Lehan and Daniels are your backups. I don't know about you, but I can get into a cornerback unit that shakes out this way. It also helps free up a draft pick that can be used elsewhere to shore up another hole.
Draft Dorsey/Long, Sign Asante, Draft/sign another decent LB... Defense would certainly turn a corner next year.
If zach retires, then his salary doesn't count for next year. Same with Traylor. Plus when did I say that all of their salaries were gonna disappear? I just said the number will go up. It is no different than when a player is released for salary cap purposes, it is done for relief. Not all of the salry goes in that instance but enough to still create cap space. it is not like I'm talking about some new concept here. And P.S. what is the difference between Booker's and all the others I mentioned, not much - maybe the final year of a contract? All I'm saying is that those guys leaving will make more room, how much more I'm not sure. But, with all those guys we would surely save 5 mill don't you think?
Doesn't matter what our cap situation is - we're not going to sign any OMG free agents in the offseason.
they must invest in the offensive and defensive lines in FA, we may have to overpay, but that is the only way to get competitive fast
Marcus Trufant has to be a target this offseason or possibly Samuel because NE won't be able to sign him and Moss and Stallworth. Terrell Suggs or Haynesworth would be nice also but I think Haynesworth will get the franchise tag. They must re-sign Rex Hadnot this offseason he is a big part of the o-line.
Booker is still playing under the contract he signed with the Bears. They took the cap hit for his prorated bonuses when they traded him, so we're not on the hook for any dead money.
the FA competition is going to be hellacious next year we will be best suited to grab 2-3 solid guys and stay away from the big fish it would be nice to get some backups who can play ST also
Trufant will not be that much cheaper. Look for him to probably get exactly Clements Money And Samual getting more
I don't understand why nobody else here is talking about Asomugha. He is the best CB in the league, has Randy Moss length and speed, knows Randy Moss's game, and did I mention he's the only CB around that can cover Randy Moss? You know, that stud WR in NE. He is who we should target. Asomugha and W Allen complement each other perfectly as well.
the amortized bonuses for Zach and JT will accelerate if they are cut, traded or retire I think there might be a cap room loss for this but I am not sure
Not necessarily. First off, Zach's contract is up in 2008 I believe, so his 2008 prorated bonus stays on the books regardless. There is no bonus impact for cutting him or trading him. JT's contract is up in 2009, so there's about $2M of 2009 bonus that would accelerate on a Pre-June 2 trade or cut*. However, if he's cut or traded after June 1, then the 2009 proration would stay on the 2009 cap and there's no impact. * If he's cut before June 2, the dolphins could use an exemption to treat him as a Post June 1 so there could be no impact on a Pre-June 2 cut.
I don't see any reason for Thomas to put on a helmet ever again. It's just not worth jeopardizing any more of his brain cells he's no doubt lost playing his heart out for this team.
Normally, that would be good. But as it is, there are 12 teams better than us with more $$ to spend!!
I'm thinking both ZT and JT have restructure their deals so many times the only thing left is pure salary. I think: Cutting/retiring does not impact the cap when the players deal is pure salary.
Actually, when they restructured what they did was change base salary dollars from the current year to a signing bonus. That meant those dollars were prorated across the life of the contract for salary cap purposes, but they still got the same amount of real money for the current year. That gained temporary cap relief for the year they restructures, and we're paying the price for that now. Zach still has $2.4M or so bonus money that's on the 2008 books whether he plays or not. JT has $2M in 2008 that is there regardless of whether he is on the team or not. There's another $2M in 2009 that may or may not accelerate into the 2008 cap.
i don't understand how Cleavland, Jacksonville and Tampa have more cap space than us especially tampa
