My guess is Smokey only lets those live whom he thinks he can corrupt. Also, a little tidbit. I'm not sure if it has meaning, but the Bible verse at the top of the page the priest opened to in Richard's cell was: "A prophet is not without honour, save in his own country."
Well sure theres a few weak episodes over the course of 5 seasons, its a TV show, to me having a few bad episodes out of like 60 some episodes is pretty dang good. I don't know where I rank it amongst TV shows of all time but its pretty high on my list. The characters are unique and flawed, really the show makes you think more than just about any network TV show out there. I think thats part of it with me though, I expect more out of cable shows, they have no arbitrary rules set up to confine the writing, to me to do what they've done with a network over 6 years is pretty amazing. Also its to their credit that they have stuck to a storyline and decided to end it on this note, not to milk it with spinoffs and cheesy seasons that don't add to the story.
The show absolutely makes you think more than probably any other show in the history of TV, no arguments from me. However I completely disagree with the bold part. In my opinion the writers have done a poor job sticking to storylines and have been way too jumpy and quick to make new ones without finishing old important storylines. Also I do feel like everything that happened last season with the time travel stuff on the island was both cheesy and didn't really add anything to the story. I mean thinking back to last season besides finding out that Chang was Miles' father (which really wasn't a big deal), the development of Sawyer and Juliette's relationship, and how Widmore and Faraday's mother got together, and that Widmore was on the island before what else did it bring to the story? I might argue that last season wasn't needed that a few simple flashbacks could have been fine as I felt a lot of those episodes last year were pure fillers.
I don't agree. I watched all of the seasons together, to me they work just fine. You could pick apart some of the time travel and storylines but thats just overthinking to me. They were leading in different directions and pulling things together for this season, not a bad thing to me. I enjoyed season 5 so it wasn't filler to me. Theres been some misdirection and such in the stories but I don't think its be unintentional to me at least.
How is that overthinking? (Overthinking is like Doc Jensen's column on EW.com about Lost each week, which I love by the way but is what the characters are reading in a random scene really that important to the story?). Whether they have ignored some past storylines intentionally only to go back to them in the last few episodes to explain them, then fine I will take my statement back. But some of the major storylines, questions and themes of the first 3 seasons have been totally ignored and dropped without explanation (remember that random Dharma food/supply drop from the random helicopter?). I'm don't expect the writers to explain everything (for example I don't really need to know who 'Adam' and 'Eve' are in the caves) but I absolutely do think they need to explain why the purpose of Dharma, the reasons behind the Ben/Other's list, why they were taking kids away (specifically Walt) and why pregnant women kept dying. And right now it doesn't look like any of that will be explained. Again these were major storylines and have been dropped completely. It's almost as if as soon as the time travel stuff happened that Lost has been a spin off to the Jacob/MIB show and totally changed directions (which it has). Some people liked the change while others have felt cheated, right now I'm someone that feels cheated. That doesn't mean I dislike the show, because I do still enjoy it, just not as much. Of course the next 8 episodes could totally change my mind.
I had totally forgotten about that! That must have been for Desmond, since Widmore would almost have to know someone was there pushing the button. Widmore obviosly knew about Ben taking over the island and switching to the other side, so the only Dharma 'employee' left was Desmond...
There are tons of moments like that that haven't been explained and honestly I didn't even remember that until I was typing out my response. Here's a question that just came to me though, wasn't it the Dharma Fire Station that the Others used to get information on the castaways? Well who were they getting the information for? Ben? For Jacob/Richards via Ben/The Others? If it was for Jacob what's the point of the lighthouse then? Since in Seasons 3 & 4, it seemed like Ben and Company were taking orders from Jacob. It now seems like Ben and The Others were just doing there own thing with no real purpose. See there are just so many questions that can't possibly be answered, that if someone really goes back and looks at them in a case by case basis things don't seem to make any sense at all, or serve no purpose. That's a big problem with the show.
I would like to see Desmond explained before it wraps up. And why he was pushing the button all the time. Desmond was a very interesting character with his "flashforwards".
To me its overthinking because things don't always have to be explained, all questions don't have to be answered. Theres still a few episodes left to answer questions so I'm not sweating it but if theres still questions left at the end how bad is that? Books and movies that are great usually leave you wondering and thinking, thats one of the things that makes them worth watching. Everything doesn't have to end neatly or be what you hoped it would be, the good guys don't have to win and guy doesn't have to get the girl for something to be worth watching.
I understand and get that we don't need to get answers for everything and I'm fine with it, that's not my issue. I'm also aware that the good guy doesn't always win or things don't end neatly and that I don't mind at all if it makes sense to the story. My problem with Lost is that although I still enjoy it, I don't nearly enjoy it as much as I did because I'm not a fan of the direction the show has taken. I loved Seasons 1 and 2 and think they were fantastic and very well written and hold them at a high standard. My main point is that the powers that be spent more than half of the show's entire run on main themes (The Others, Dharma, etc) only to completely abandon them and go in a different direction (Jacob/MIB show), which isn't good in my opinion. As a fan it makes me both frustrated and mad since the show makes everything that happened before the time travel stuff almost completely useless. The show has completely changed direction and in my opinion it didn't change for the best, in fact I find the time travel stuff to have been completely useless. Remember this is the same show where the powers that be told fans this show is realistic and everything that happens can in fact happen in real life.
I think the purpose of Dharma is a pretty huge storyline in the show. It would be a shame for it to just completely disappear with no resolution whatsoever. Every single thing doesn't have to be wrapped up but the major storylines should be.
Completely agree with this post and that's what I'm trying to say only you did it in a much better (and shorter) way.
I would think they will wrap that one up, I agree that would be a pretty big storyline to not at least attempt to wrap up. I have to wonder if maybe they had the series planned for a longer run maybe? Not sure because when I was reading there will 16 episodes (not sure if thats true but I think it is) left I wasn't seeing how they could wrap every single thing up nicely. We'll see, I'm enjoying the Season so far.
As soon as i saw the electrical field map I assumed it was Desmond that Widmore had. Looks like they will be tying up that loose end, which is really nice. This for a change was a decent Kwon episode, and it again looks like the people with MIB does not have a good ending in the "sideways" world.
I thought tonight's episode was pretty boring and uneventful outside of the last minute, but then again I've never been a big Kwon flashback/sideways/forward story fan. Actually none of these flash sideways stories are thrilling me. No real shock that MIB can't travel in water in his smoke form or he would have left the island by now. I will say that I'm rooting for Claire to kill Kate in the final episode even though I doubt that's going to happen.
I liked it alright. Not a great episode, but I was satisfied. I want to see Locke go badass, like he did when he beat Richard up in the opener. I also wonder what the hell is going to happen with Ben/Widmore/Desmond. That should be explosive. So far, I've enjoyed only a few flash sideways (Locke and Ben come to mind). However, I think it's important to note that what we're watching may very well be the end of the show. We know the island sinks in the alt timeline, so I'm trying to view these sideways as the conclusion of the character arcs. Maybe some people find redemption, maybe some cannot escape their past. At the end of the day, I guess it's not important what's actually taking place, but the why of it all. Perhaps this is why some (myself included) aren't in love with them. Hopefully by the end of the season, better context, no matter what the result will change my opinion. Damon tweeted that next weeks episode is going to start new conversation. Maybe he means the endgame? Who knows...
It was an OK episode. I kind of like the flash sideways, however I am a sucker for alternate time lines. Episodes where they have to move from Point A to Point B before they get the the fun stuff in C are rarely awesome.
Well the first half was fairly boring, but that last half hour was good stuff. You guys I'm sure recognized Mikhail (the nine language guy working with Keamy)? And then Omar was on the freighter, working with Keamy before, he's working with him again in the flash sideways. Anyway, before Keamy taped up Jin's mouth, he said what sounded like "you have no idea what's going to happen to the island"... I've played it back 10 times and I could have sworn he said that. When Sun hit her head running from MIB, the flash sideways scene then showed her looking in the mirror for the longest time, as if she noticed a mark? We've seen Jack notice odd bruises on himself previously in the flash sideways. Maybe I'm looking for something that isn't there, but I'm wondering if we'll see both "worlds" come together somehow at the end. Regardless, with the package being Desmond, if Widmore is preparing for war against MIB (or is it really Ben?) the last package that we saw delivered was Cooper (Locke's father) who was eventually killed by Sawyer. Interesting to see how that plays out.
I did pick up on the "you have no idea what's going to happen to the island" and thats what i thought i heard. I also liked how Jinn shot Bakunin in the eye. I do feel like the two worlds will interest at the end. BTW, i went into this episode expecting to hate it, cause i hate the Jinn and sun's story line, but i loved last nights episode. It was well done imo. The sideways was not great but not bad either
Maybe they will tie in the whole glass eye/missing film strip find from the episodes where survivors from the back half of the pllane. I never forgot about that and always wondered if it were a clue left from the future.
as much as i love desmond and want to see more of him (and have him explained) i really wanted the 'package' to be Walt. There were so many rumors that they filmed scenes with him at the young age for the end of the show, i can only hope that's true. they continued the trend of people getting shot and throwing in people from episodes past, and the obvious love story of sun and jin, so that didn't defer from the usual 'final season' episode format.. but it was better than i expected. the whole 'language' amnesia thing is lame though. as much as i hate to hear sun speak, its still better than wasting mintues of the episode translating her back and forth.
It was just announced that after the Lost finale Jimmy Kimmel Live will have the writers/creates as well as cast members on the show talking about the series, which goes against what Damon and Carton originally said once the show ends they're going dark and will never talk about it again. Should be a pretty cool and maybe they will give out some information/questions that they didn't give out in the actual show.
Not a huge fan of Jimmy Kimmel, but I do know he's been a huge Lost fan since day one, so this is a cool opportunity for him (and the rest of us).
I think Jimmy being a fan will benefit us because he will ask the same questions we would. Hopefully it'll be great.
Yeah, after feeling some sense of understanding I am again lost here. So many possibilities I have tried to think, but I am not coming up with much other than a a couple far fetched ideas.
As for where Desmond asks George about getting the manifest I think we find out what he is looking for is that maybe Charlie wasn't on the manifest, maybe a plant from Jacob or MIB against whomever is feeding this alt timeline/concsiousness, as a way to merge reality... It just seems that Desmond has the truth about it all, somehow.
yeah i love the fact that they are trying to bring it all together or so it appears. And just maybe we won't have as many questions at the end as we think. When does Desmond start seeing the future again (remember the first time and Charlies death?). Or does he like what he saw in the flash sideways, he gets Penny AND Whidmore likes him already, that he thinks if the island were to blow up in a nuclear explosion as Daniel says, the flash sideways continues for Desmond. Bah... you guys saw the picture in Whidmore's office? black and white scale?
Not sure what to think of this episode. I liked that the sideways universe isn't all that it appears to be (finally something interesting to connect it with the main story) but I have no idea what it all means... We're almost at the end folks... p.s. April 27 will be a repeat of Ab Aberterno (SP??), Richard's flashback. ABC trying to soak up some viewers for may sweeps I imagine.
Yeah I noticed the picture right away. I wonder if that picture has always been in Charles office, even in the older flashbacks.
