If you have a gun to your head, I think you have bigger problems than worrying about who to draft. How about a good lawyer? ......or a Priest?
If you look strictly at talent, it's a tough decision. Marshall is a proven #1 WR, that's an edge. However, Dez has as much or more potential. He may be the best option (from a talent view) at WR in several years. If you look at other 'baggage', that makes it a little different. Marshall has made mistakes so far in his career off the field that Dez may or may not make. I think this outweighs the on-field talent edge to Marshall in that we know he has made bad choices and is nearer to getting league sanctions for his legal issues, etc than Dez is...right now... It's really close...neither is TO or Pacman and neither is "Man of the Year" material...
easy ... we can trade down, get additional picks AND get a known quantity in Marshall ... Marshall all day long ... at the end of the day .... you might even be able to get him for a 2d rd pick on draft day ....
I've had a gun pointed at my head. Not fun. Be that as it may, I'll go with Dez Bryant. Why? Because I genuinely don't like Brandon Marshall.
Dez Bryant was a monster out on the field playing in college. He now has to play with men and there's no proof he has the ability to do that.
You say this as if College receivers are sure things. Sometimes you hit on Andre or Calvin Johnson. Sometimes you get Mike Williams or to this point Limas Sweed. Then sometimes you get Roy Williams who lights it up then bombs. College receivers are by no means a sure thing and Bryant at 12 would get between 6 and 8 million a year for playing good in college.
That's a horrible comparison. A fat guy with $30 million in the bank guaranteed. He had a history in Tennessee of not trying hard and Washington knew it. No one questions Marshall's ability or work ethic. He's worrying upstairs. Albert Haynesworth doesn't try on every down and he was out injured some of last season. Brandon Marshall caught 21 passes in one game. That's 17 less than Ginn's entire season.
He has also proven he can garner a much more lengthy arrest record than Dez who only has ZERO. BM is a hiccup away from a long suspension and would cost an average of 10 mil a year. Give me Dez any day and twice on Sunday.
Dez is going to command between $6 and $8 million a year without having played a single down. He'll be making the same or more than Michael Crabtree if we pick him at 12. What's the point of paying him a little less than Marshall for the possibility that he won't suck? Dez hasn't proven anything. Vernon Gholston was supposed to be a sure bet too and we know how he turned out. Why do you people insist on claiming Dez will be a beast when there's no proof of this. He'll lie even if it will cost him a suspension and there have been so many Draft Bust receivers in recent years. Roy Williams (unless he turns good again), Chad Jackson, Limas Sweed, Mike Williams, Rashaun Woods, Reggie Williams, David Terrell, Peter Warrick, Troy Williamson, and this one is a real kicker because talent at the Pro level doesn't equal stardom, Charles Rogers.
Dez, and its not even close. To be more accurate with this Poll, you probably should have included neither as an option.
Sarcasm? Those of you pounding the Miles Austin drum, have you actually watched him play much? Just curious.
Brandon Marshall. For those choosing Bryant on argument of more potential, that sounds like a risky and foolish bet to me. Given the risks associated with drafting wide receivers, what potential does he show that makes anybody think he could outperform Brandon Marshall? Did anybody see Marshall set the record for receptions in a single game last year? How many multiple TD games has he had? Sure it's possible Dez Bryant could be better than Marshall. But history shows it's not likely. Costs aside, Brandon Marshall > Dez Bryant, and I would argue that the extra cost is worth it for a proven commodity in terms of talent.
Good point GISH; also, a "Neither" option assumes the answerer knows jiu-jitsu or some other way of self-defense or disarmament technique...
I did not say anything of this. Bryant will not get 6 to 8 million a year on his first contract, I guarantee you that. Last year's #12 pick, Knowshon Moreno, had a 5 year, $23 million contract with $13 million in guarantees. Not even close to what Marshall is going to ask. Not even close to what Marshall is going to bring in headaches either. Neither Bryant or Marshall are a sure thing, don't tell me that I'm saying that Bryant is a sure thing. I feel the odds of Marshall or Bryant succeeding in Miami are similar though, so why not go with the one that isn't going to get in much trouble?
Doesn't it make one wonder why other teams are shying away from Brandon Marshall? Is it the risk involving his character or the first round draft pick you would have to give up? Miami can't be the only team with need of a #1 receiver? If Marshall came to the Dolphins and got in trouble again what do you suppose Goodall would do considering his existing arrest record? The biggest question would be, what would be the effect on the Dolphin's organization if he got a Pacman Jones or Ricky Williams type of suspension. Would we be willing to wait for him and hope he straitened himself out or would we be looking for another #1 wide receiver? Dez Bryant has some minor problems but no arrest issues. He may or may not have an attitude problem considering the reports of him being late for various functions. Most everyone in the know considers Bryant to be the best WR in this draft and the most talented. Lets solve the problem by drafting the best OLB or FS in the draft.
Yea? Actually I have? Miles Austin is a blue collar WR who gets the job done and plays with a burning desire, there is nothing not to like about him.
how about this: we make the trade with dallas for Austin (swapping first round picks). Dallas takes Bryant who JJ covets. Then we use the new lower 1st round pick to trade with Denver. In the end we get both Austin AND Marshall. Yes its farfetched but, its not out of the realm of possibility
If Dez Bryant is so great, then why is everyone assuming he will be available for the Dolphins to draft?
The odds can't be similar because Dez has never played pro. Knowshon Moreno made that but Dez is going to ask for more. He'll go the way of Michael Crabtree (same agent I believe). Every year the money for rookies goes up. Crabtree is making around $7 million a year as the second WR taken in last year's draft. Imagine Dez Bryant being the first WR taken.
Another question could be used for Marshall, if he is a great #1 WR, why is he still sitting around waiting for Miami or another team to make a trade and why is Denver attempting to get rid of him?
Oh Bryant will get his money, if he doesn't he'll pull a Michael Crabtree and threaten to sit out the season until he get's it. His agent and the whole Deion Sanders thing pretty much leads me to believe that. This guy just has too many warning signs to be a high first round draft pick IMO. Yea he might turn out to be the greatest reciever ever but chances are just as good or better that he will be a headache and a huge bust. Their is no conceivable way in my mind that Marshall is a bigger risk than Bryant...Marshall without a doubt will help us next year and if either one of them is likely to get their act togethor anytime soon it will be the older Marshall rather than the younger Bryant as with age comes wisdom... Most all of us were screwups when we were kids one way or another but we eventually grew out of it as we got older and started to face the consequences. Marshall's been through alot more consequences than Bryant has.
You're really looking into the Michael Crabtree deal too much, IMO. I don't see a Dez Bryant hold out if he were drafted by Miami... nor do I see him commanding 7 million a year... I would say more around 5 million a year. I think Marshall will be looking towards 10+ million, I would imagine. But that's just a guess. In terms of talent, yes Marshall is the better for-sure option. However I do not trust Marshall as a teammate. In terms of NFL talent, Marshall wins... hands down. We don't know what Bryant can do in the NFL. However in terms of being a teammate, Bryant wins. Marshall is a punk. There is really no way around it. Dez Bryant is nothing of the sort. If we didn't have any off the field issues to worry about in Marshall, the choice would be easier.
And why is that? Because Marshall has had repeated run ins with the law and Bryant hasn't? So.......Marshall is a better choice because he's been in more trouble and has more reason to have learned a lesson?
I never claimed Dez will be a beast. I'd rather have his potential, and lower rookie contract, than what Marshall will want and what Marshall gives a team for off field concerns. He is good for about 3 arrests a year. He likes to rough up women. That makes him a punk POS in my book. The next transgression will likely draw a long suspension. Then it won't matter if he is more proven than Dez. You Marshall nuthuggers think he would all the sudden turn into an Eagle Scout if he comes to the Dolphins? Leopards don't change their spots.
Please football spirits make this true, I pray that he isn't available. I hope someone else spends the money, our WR's are fine, we need players to stop the other teams WR. Just say no.

I voted Dez and then had second thoughts... Here's one. If Dez is available take him. If not, trade the pick and get Marshall. Hmmm... Not a bad solution.
