Suppose I have a dead Sony VAIO FW (power supply) but a brand new perfect condition 320GB hard drive inside with all of my **** stored on it... I purchase a brand new Macbook Pro 500GB, and I'm trying to transfer all songs, pictures, and "videos" (lol) from old hard drive to new hard drive - Vista to Mac if that makes a difference. What's the best and easiest way to go about this, being that I have no access to actually turning my old computer on? Will pay if possible to take it somewhere and have them transfer EVERYTHING for me.
This kind of item will help you out. [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Adaptec-Enclosure-converts-internal-2188700/dp/B0009ZHF54"]Amazon.com: Adaptec 2.5 inch USB 2.0 Hard Drive Enclosure Kit converts 2.5 inch internal ATA hard d ( 2188700 ): Electronics[/ame]
yeah you can put your drive in the case and it will be an external hard drive. you know if you were transferring from windows to windows you can just use a direct link. Just saying.......
I believe you can find a case and just pop it out of the laptop (has data already on it) and put it into the case. then he will use a seperate power supply for the hard case.
Are you talking about something other than the hard drive enclosure I linked to? With that you take the hard drive out of the laptop put it in the enclosure and it links to the new computer via usb or firewire depending on the model.
Im talking about what you are talking about bro. lol I am just calling it a case, not sure if thats what is throwing you off......
Will the DRM for the music files get lost on transfer? Or is that an issue anymore these days? Unless they have no DRM on them. I built a new rig a while back and a few songs I bought from Urge (out of business now yay) won't play anymore or burn or anything. Windows gives me a can't find rights blah blah something even though I paid for the songs. Rapsody bought the rights to Urge's client base but when I contacted them they sorry your out of luck. The others well...they transferred fine.
Thanks a lot guys. I heard about the transfer disc too, but the problem is, my Vaio (Windows) doesn't have any power. It cannot turn on, however, there is no problem with the hard drive. I'm going to take it to Comp USA and see what they say, hear their prices, reject, then buy whatever it is they were going to use for 10% of the price they'd charge me and do it myself. Ordering the new 2010 edition of the Macbook Pro soon... just need to go to the Apple store and decide on 13 or 15 inches.
My music should be easy to transfer and that's my main concern. I don't have any single songs - all albums in folders, and they're all in one folder (MiTunes). Really only need music, pictures, and my portfolio for one of my classes.
This is all you need. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812232002 It's what I would use if you brought it to me.
Just remove the hard drive and put it in an external enclosure. Quicker and cheaper than dealing with repair outlets, especially as you're getting a new computer anyway. You can just drag and drop the relevant "personal files" to your new machine. I'd go with the 15''. The 13'' lineup still uses Core 2 Duo CPUs, and at this point you should avoid that particular CPU if you can.
Well, the state of repair of the Vaio is the real issue here, chances are good it is a known issue like a simple blown switch, that said, if I needed to transfer files and did not wish to muck about with transfer cables and things like Laplink and Cloning the original HD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817153066 37 bucks, and you can plug any HD into it and just clone the thing.
Now if you can find me one of those that does 2.5, 3.5 IDE and SATA you'll make me a happy man. Have you ever tried one of these? http://www.frys.com/product/5986674?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG
Never tried one of those, really I was more of a Win98 kinda guy until the really good content became available via Streaming which is when messing around with just reading HD's instead of reformatting them became more of an issue, with a 10 gb HD, there won't be much on it, 100GB and all of the media files and OS's available, the ability to transfer in toto systems became more important. Like this maybe: http://www.centrix-intl.com/details.asp?productid=6035 Doesn't mention IDE, but SATA 2.5 and 3.5 will work in it. BTW...22 bucks....
Psshaw, WFW 3.11, on dial up (28k), with IE 3.0, worked great, but basically was Text Only. But with Linux, and all of the Adobe based content on the web, sooner or later, one has to put Old Yeller down so to speak. As for W98: Scanreg/fix Scanreg/restore Scanreg/repair. Still recall the cheater codes for Doom..iddqd...iddkha
