Potential 5th round picks

Now that we have added a 5th round pick by trading Ginn I thought it would be intetesting to look at potential prospects. Here is my list. It includes guys who may slide, guys who should definitely be there, and maybe a couple who might even be there in the 6th round.

Good call on A.J. Edds. I should have included him.

Here are some of my thoughts.

I wouldn't take John Skelton or Jarrett Brown in the 5th round but I really like Joe Webb. However I don't know much about Skelton. He could turn out to be great. I hate the idea of using a pick on Brown after taking Pat White last year. Webb is a beast. I like him as a trigger man for the Wildcat and as a developmental wideout.

I am not sure I would take a chance on Dezmon Briscoe or Mike Williams in the 5th. Not after we just got Brandon Marshall. We don't need to take that chance so why do it? I should have included Antonio Brown because I actually like him better than Emmanuel Sanders but both of them are good candidates to take over Ginn's return duties.

I like LeGarrette Blount a lot. However the lack of speed could be a problem. Not as big a fan of Lonyae Miller but I read that many scouts like his potential.

I would pass on Andrew Quarless but somebody told me that he was not used to his full potential at Penn State. Is that an excuse or a reason? I don't know.

Zane Beadles and Ciron Black are limited but they have potential. I would not be surprised if we drafted Marshall Newhouse in the 4th round.

Jeff Owens could be the pick. He did not flash when I watched him last year but as a space-eating nose tackle he might be all right. The triumvirate seems to be very high on him and they certainly got a good look at him at the Senior Bowl.

If we take an outside linebacker in the 1st round I doubt we will take George Johnson, Arthur Moats, or Kevin Basped. However Edds is a different matter. His ability to cover tight ends is certainly appealing and an area we could definitely use improvement.

I like Perry Riley and Rennie Curran more than Pat Angerer but Mayock likes Angerer. Probably doesn't matter because every year there is a linebacker or two that I really like in the late rounds and Ireland never drafts them. I don't know why this year would be any different.

Alterraun Verner is very good in coverage. He could be excellent in the nickel and dime. However I would prefer a cornerback who can also return kicks.

Kurt Coleman is a football player. Period. It would not surprise me if we took him with one of our 6th round picks. The 5th might be a little high. However there is a good chance he won't be there in the 6th.

Yeah if you are right then Quarless could turn out to be a steal in the 5th round.

 

Personally I don't see us taking a tight end unless one slides. For example if Jimmy Graham, Ed Dickson, or Dennis Pitta were on the board at #145 it would be too good to pass up.

 

If its me I am drafting Antonio Brown.

After that I like Joe Webb, LeGarrette Blount, Marshall Newhouse, and Kurt Coleman. If I am predicting I would guess Jeff Owens.

 

Another guy I should mention is Syd'Quan Thompson. I could see him being our pick. We would not have to dress our fifth wideout to return kicks and he could play in the nickel and dime packages. Thompson did not have an impressive senior year but if you consider his body of work overall he has the look of a sleeper. He would never start but if he can be effective in the nickel and takes one to the house every now and then what more can you ask?

Assuming we don't draft Javier Arenas in the 3rd or 4th round of course.

 

The thing is size does not seem to be a requirement for our return man. Remember Dave Megget? Patrick Cobbs is not big and he has returned kicks. They tried out Chris Williams last year during the preseason. He was not a big wideout by any means.

In addition to his return ability Thompson has excellent coverage skills. You are always going to need a guy to play in the nickel and dime packages. So what if he is never a starter? You don't want your return man starting anyway. You want him somewhat rested for those kickoffs and punts.

 

Mayock just moved Sanders into his group of Top 5 receivers.

 

That is why he is a good fit for the nickel and dime.
