If you accept the supposition that this is Ronnie's last year as a Dolphin, and there have been a lot of signs pointing to this, it makes a lot of since to get his replacement this year if possible. I don't think we have anyone that can do what he does on the team currently. I mean being the Wildcat trigger man. What makes him so good is IMO, what makes him a good inside runner. He makes good decisions, reads blocks extremely well, and runs with great power, balance and decent speed. I don't think you need speedster at that spot, it's more important to be able to run through an arm tackle. Most of Ronnies run options from the wildcat are inside, or bounces outside after a fake inside.

Gerhart can do that in spades. Just looking for someone to take Ronnies spot, I don't see a better option than Gerhart. Spiller would be the better back from an overall perspective, receiving out of the back field, running from the base and the potential to score on any play. But, he will cost the 12, and that is if he doesn't go earlier. The 12 is reserved for a safety or a trade back IMO. Gerhart would be the better Wildcat man. (unless we're talking the sweep back spot) Gerhart should slip into the 2nd, possibly even the late 2nd. How do we get him? Is a trade back our only hope? Should we even get him? We do have Ronnie this year and other needs. I am wondering what the overall opinion is.

And if you haven't seen much of him, I think most of you are east coast, here some highlights from last year:

Iam a big Ghart fan, I got him goin in the 2nd, so if Ronnie is traded {which Iam against} then I would take him with my 2nd..

Toby totally fits with the criteria here, physically imposing specimen, with talented hands, feet and balance..

    I'd rather have Ben Tate.

EDIT: to answer the thread title, um....draft him?

Wow this kids looks like he is tough, seems like he always breaks from the first tackler.
    He looks impressive for sure.

I'm looking at the holes he ran through and they look pretty big. A lot of those tackles were against DB's. I'm not sure how that'll translate in the NFL. I think the Coaching staff is hoping Lex will develop into that kind of player anyway so I don't see us wasting a pick on Gerhart especially considering we have no complete OLB's or a FS that's gotten the vote of confidence from the coaches.

We didn't see so much of the wildcat after Ronnie went down last year. And if I remember correctly, not at all in a game or two. If Ronnie is indeed traded, I would suspect that the wildcat would either die, or only show up once in a while. Hopefully, this offense will no longer need it anymore, in which CJ Spiller becomes my choice.

I just hope the Patriots don't get him with one of their 2nd rounders.....I would hate our guys trying to drag Gerhart down all the time. I doubt he will be around in the third, but if he is I would grab him with a 3rd rounder.

Gerhart is much better than Lex at pretty much everything a RB is asked to do. I agree that we have bigger needs, but if we really are shopping Ronnie because he isn't in the dolphins future plans we will need a replacement. If we trade back and have a mid to late 2nd I can see Gerhart being BPA. I can certainty see that if he makes it to the 3rd.

Oh, and he has broken plenty of DL and LB tackles. How bad does any RBs line look in highlight videos?

The Dolphins might not need it, but why wouldn't they want it if it can be kept effective?

as much as people abhor the idea, I think you should try to keep it around, its a good way to throw defenses off, and why take just one gun to the gun fight, when you can take 2.........

I think Gerhart is better than Tate, but we will see who's right about that in the next few years.

    Re: the edit:
If it was that easy we'd be welcoming Berry, Suh, and Spiller to the Dolphins next week.

i dont think gerhart stands out enough that any team should be concerned about trading up or down to get him. There's enough 2nd tier RBs in this draft that you can take whoever drops to you and be just fine. I'm doubting that we do anything related to offense before round 5, unless its a TE.

If he's there in the 3rd we should absolutely grab him, he's going to be a tough running pro for a lot of years. I'd say he's out of our reach unless we can reacquire a 2nd round pick though. I can definitely see the Pats snagging him.....

I have HUGE hopes that we draft Toby. I've know him and his family for a long time and they are great folks. He reminds me of Larry Czonka.

IF we trade Ronnie, or trade back in Round 1 I want Toby to be our pick. I can't imagine that our FO and staff isn't wild about him. He has everything we like in a person and he's tough as nails. He has great vision and he simply can't be tackled.

Wait, so you're saying we get Gerhart AND his family???

Seems like the last time we drafted a player and his family it didn't turn out so well....

Seriously though, if he is there in the third round, I hope they take him. That won't happen unless Miami can trade back from #12 and get another second or third rounder though. We need an OLB and Free safety more than finding a replacement for Ronnie and/or Ricky this year.

Out here in So Cal where he is from we gets lots of radio talk on him. They are saying as early as late Round 1 and most likely round 2...

We have too many needs to take Gerhart at any spot above sixth round. FS, OLB, NT. These things have to be addressed in with our early picks. Even if Ronnie is shipped off I wouldn't be on board with drafting Gerhart. One of the reasons is him not having played in the SEC, ACC, or Big10. I'm biased to those divisions. Go figure. Two is the huge busts that have come out of college RB's in the past. Three is have you seen our defensive roster lately? We have nothing substantial at OLB, one NT, and two FS who can't get on the field. If Ronnie goes I'd be happy with what we have for this year. Include the fact that guys like Dwyer are there I'd call picking up Gerhart Pat White '10. It just makes no sense regardless of his ability.

knowing parcells and co. it's probably a smokescreen, but the fact that they're willing to listen to offers for ronnie and the fact that we could now go back to a pro style offense full-time because of marshall tells me that the wildcat could be dead. although they might work in some plays for pat white if he sticks around, so you never know.

could this gerhart guy be our next csonk? (wishful thinking, i know)

I don't think the needs at OLB and NT are as dire as that. I think Miami is JTs first choice and if we want him after the draft I think we can get him. That would mean that we are just JP down from last year and Anderson/Wake filled in fine for him. Also, Soliai is under rated, he was playing fine by the end of the year. FS i expect to be addressed in round one, or we go forward with Culver there.

As for draft busts, name a position that doesn't have busts. Or, a college conference that hasn't produced them for that matter.

Interesting. After watching his tape there the only question I had was his speed but he ran a 4.53 at the combine.Unfortunately, I just don't see us drafting him unless they do get rid of Brown and have an open spot. We have too many other more pressing needs.

I would like to have a back with better speed. There were some runs in the highlights where a faster back could have taken it all the way. I love power but I love power AND speed even more.

Wake has little run defense ability. Anderson is not a starter at this point. Quentin Moses isn't the answer. Wake's rushing ability is his only gem at this point. Even if we're only JP down, our Defense fell apart last year with what we currently have. We need talent. JT isn't the player he was back in the day and it would be very stupid to pass up on the deep talent in this draft because YOU believe our OLB's aren't that bad. I'm not knocking Soliai but we need another NT because we don't want to overwork Soliai. NT's can't play every down and Soliai is the only NT on our roster. Shaun Roger's did that in Cleveland and was caught taking plays off. We NEED another NT.

Soliai is NT for only run downs anyway. McDaniels or Starks played there on passing downs, or the phins went 4 down linemen. We played some pretty good running teams and weren't gashed after Jason went down. NT wasn't the issue. FS and ILB were, and to a lesser extent OLB. Also, most of the OLB prospects that we are looking at are DE conversions. What ever problems Wake had, they will have, only Wake will be 1 year further along in his development. I'm not suggesting that we pass on a Morgan or a JPP to draft a RB. I'm saying that if we some how can get a pick in the range where he is BPA, he makes a lot of since, enough that I'd consider trying to get there if we can do it without losing value. I'm not sure that we can, hence this thread.

Our defense didn't fall apart last year b/c of a lack of pass rush. In fact, it was a top 10 unit in the league in terms of pressure on the QB. Some people seem to think that our pass rush was inconsistent but compared to the rest of the league it wasn't. Reality is that most pass rushers are stone-walled on +90% of their rushes. Demarcus Ware gets stone-walled on 86% of his rushes last year.

As for what we have, Wake is no worse against the run than Dumervil whom Nolan was able to use very effectively last year as a starter. Anderson was easily as effective as Porter was last year and even outperformed Porter's usual production in the game that Anderson started in place of Porter. And Moses was at worst good depth. We need at least one more body there but I'm with Two Tacos that the situation isn't as dire as some portray.

With NT Soliai will be the two down guy and we'll use Starks and McDaniel as the guys on pass rush downs. And that's only for 8 games. After that those two downs will be split between Soliai and Ferg. I do think we'll bring another body in. I would guess Cam Thomas or a guy in the 4th or later.
