Heyward reminds me of the Crime Dog, Fred McGriff. Had to laugh, the pregame show the other day mentioned that Heyward upon meeting Chipper said "Nice to meet you Mr. Jones"
I thought Glaus was out at first in the 9th. But I'll take it. Really impressive at bat by Heyward, especially considering he is below the Mendoza line against lefties and the guy was throwing 97.
He may have been out at first. It was so close it probably looked like a draw to the umpire. That's a fair tradeoff after the blown call with Chipper supposedly being picked off at second. I knew Glaus was going to try to lose it. I wish they would have just kept LaRoche. I am unimpressed with Glaus and his under .200 average with RISP up to this point. But I guess I should give him a pass for now b/c he was out with injury for over a year. Hopefully he picks it up.
I haven't been this impressed with an Atlanta player in some time, maybe ever. I'm probably going to bankrupt myself driving over to the ballpark this summer to watch this kid play.
Diaz flirted with the cycle but became an afterthought later in the game. His first three hits were a triple, single, and double.
Yeah I think it's pretty safe to say Jason Heyward is good at baseball. You have to wonder if the Braves FO should try to get the kid to sign an Evan Longoria type contract now. He'd be foolish not too.
That was my thought as well when they opted to start him at the beginning of the season instead of later to save that last year. All signs point to that happening, or at least the Braves trying to make it happen. I LOVED that move for the Rays when they did it. It was actually a smart move by Longoria as well in hindsight.
Absolutely it was a great move by both the Rays and Longoria since he was guaranteed what 30 million dollars no matter what? How could anyone that young and so far away from being a FA not opt to sign a contract like that? Sure he's possibly leaving more money on the table but on the flip side he could (god forbid obviously) get injury and never play another game in his life. On the plus side by the time he gets to be a FA he'll still be in his prime and very young and could make even more money then. It's a win/win. I'm not sure how the Braves FO operates in terms of handling contracts with players in season but I wouldn't be surprised to see it get done by year end. Pure speculation on my part but I wouldn't be shocked if it was done by the All Star break even.
The Braves have offered contracts in season in the past. The only thing Braves refuse to offer is a no-trade clause.
Heyward never should have come up for the walkoff win had the first base ump not totally blown the call on the third out. The game should have ended on a double play but the Braves got an extra out. This game is why instant replay should be used. Give each manager one instant replay to prevent stuff like this.
It was a tie which goes to the runner. They could have watched the replay and ruled it the exact same way. They reaired the play five or six times on sportsouth during the broadcast. I won't even get into the bad call that went against the Braves earlier in the game with Chipper supposedly being picked off at second. This game is not even in the neighborhood of why replay should be used. I couldn't disagree with you more.
Techincally, there is. Section 6.05 states, "A batter is out when after he hits a fair ball, he or first base is tagged before he touches first base." If the ball does not beat the runner, he is safe. So, if there is a tie, then the runner cannot be out, he must be safe. Hence, the tie goes to the runner. Also, you'll never hear an umpire say "They got there at the same time, so he was out." Either (In the umps opinion) the ball beat him and he is out or it didn't and he is safe. /end Umpire School
Braves rallied in the ninth off of back to back homers from Glaus and Heyward to send tonight's game into extras. Glaus was getting booed from sucking so much but he shut those guys up. I had just been complaining about him earlier in the game. Heyward crushed the second pitch he saw to right center field. Crushed it. Hopefully they pull it off soon b/c I'm kind of ready to go to sleep.
McClouth hits a walkoff homer in the bottom of the tenth. Better luck next time Phils. Another great game. Braves win and I get to bed before 10:30.
These have been the two most exciting back to back games I've ever seen. Glaus and Nate coming through, and Heyward being Heyward. Sent from my HERO200 using Tapatalk
that was great how the Braves all left the dugout after McLouth's walkoff HR... but were going berserk in the hallway. team seems to have chemistry, and they are having fun.
Amazing how quickly they got together on that You just know there was one guy in the dugout who said "Alright, if he goes deep we all bolt for the tunnel." That even the coaches were in on it is what cracks me up. This team has had it's struggles, but they're definitely a loose bunch. Huge win too, because going up against Halladay tonight is almost (almost) a sure loss.
According to a Braves source, Tim Hudson was behind the "silent treatment walkoff" stunt. Hudson, a huge prankster, would neither confirm nor deny.
Check out this link. http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/blog/bi...yone-go-Nate-McLouth-celebrate?urn=mlb,235632 You can also view the video of it there as well.
Halladay pitched really well but the defense behind him robbed Atlanta of probably about three runs which was the difference. One was Victorino robbing Glaus of another homer. I know why people throw **** at him from the stands. I like the chances of taking the series tomorrow with 60 year old Jamie Moyer starting. No way they can hide their bullpen tomorrow night.
Halladay is just too tough. Shane Vic with a beautiful catch against the wall....great defense all around by the Phillies. Rubber match coming up.
The defense was really the difference here. Not that Halladay wasn't lights out but Glaus basically hit a homer off of him that was robbed. If that sharply hit ball that Escobar hit later in the game with the bases loaded doesn't hit the mound, we're looking at at least two more right there. When you're as good as Halladay and you get great defense and a little luck you're going to be impossible to score on. This should be a good one tonight, but I'll probably be watching the draft most of the time instead.
This team is garbage. [pitching aside] I was ready to preorder some tickets a few days ago. I'm not spending my hard earned money to watch them set new records for number of baserunners stranded.
Mets always seem to get those rain shortened one run wins. Ah well......in other news....Ryan Howard signs a huge extension for the Phillies. 5 years/$125+ million. That should keep him away from the Yankees/Mets/Red Sox. Werth is next in getting paid. CSNPhilly.com The Phillies have signed first baseman Ryan Howard to a five-year, $125 million contract extension, a person close to Howard has told Phillies insider Jim Salisbury. The extension will kick in starting in 2012 and will go through 2016.
But how can the Phillies resign Werth now, who will probably command 13 to 15 million as year, if they couldn't even afford to keep Lee's 8 million for this year? I don't see that happening at all, especially with Domonic Brown in the minors waiting for a shot. Also that extension for Howard is a terrible idea. Way too much money and length of time, especially since the contract won't even kick in until he's 32, with someone of his body size. Apparently no one in the Philly F.O. has been paying attention to what's going on in Boston with a similar built slugger or what happened to the likes of Mo Vaughn or Cecil Fielder (who had similar stats to Howard through age 29). This contract is going to most likely end up a big disaster, especially since you can't hide him at the DH spot in the NL. EDIT (more info): Plus on top of that assuming Ike Davis works out for the Mets, that would only leave the Red Sox as a potential team for Howard (since the Yankees have Teixeira) that would seemingly have a hole at 1B and has the money to spend, and with potentially Albert Pujols, Adrian Gonzalez and Prince Fielder also FAs after the 2012 season, it was possible that the Phillies could sign one of those guys instead who don't carry as much risk as Howard (Fielder certainly carries the risk but is younger). The Phillies should have waited this one out instead of jumping ahead with the extension.
Not that I disagree with you about the contract details, but didn't Howard lose a lot of weight this offseason?
