Kirwan's top tight ends http://www.nfl.com/draft/story;jses...0d5d807abd87&template=with-video&confirm=true
Yeah, I like Cottam a LOT, but you just can't ignore the injury history...more importantly the diversity of those injuries. The guy is just waiting to fall apart. What is it with Tennessee players and extensive injury histories?
I think this is our guy, we've shown some interest. I though Carlton would be for sure, but there are no indications he is
It seems like schools have their historical flaws. Tennesee with the injuries, Penn State with the RB busts and etc.
True that. Kirwan has Davis #1 at TE, but 6'3" is the height I want in my Wide Receivers...In a TE I'd want a bigger target and someone who is a mismatch for DB's. Plus Davis ran a 4.76; Martellus Bennett ran a 4.68, at 6'6". Not a huge difference on the whole, but for a smallish TE Davis is slow. I don't see how that is a #1 TE. That's the flaw in all these experts; they use overall college performance as the holy grail, instead of just one of the yardsticks you use to measure a player. College performance is one of the best tools for assessing a player; but you also have to break down how the player did against his best competition; that's the talent level he will face in the pros. Draft Scout has Davis third, behind Bennet and Dustin Keller.
I wish we could use that when looking at combine results. It seems most teams base their stock value off their combine results and pro days. Football is played in heavy pads and defenders, not short shorts and a wife beater. Maybe if we look at a players game film against opposing teams, we wouldn't have as many busts as we have. I also agree that Davis isn't the best TE. He was dissapointing like you said in his forties.
In a perverse sort of way, I kind of agree. Yep. The combine, again, are one tool in evaluating a player. What I like about the combine is the strict measure of one player against his peers on a level playing field - no home-field advantage, no bull**** hand-timed 40's. What I don't like is the overemphasis on verticals and crap like that.
I would not take him before the 4th round. It's unfortunate he has had all these injuries but some guys just have fragile bodies. But I wish him well and hope he has success in the NFL wherever he ends up.
To me, he's one of the most puzzling players in the draft. Great measurables, with so little production because of injuries. 21 career receptions for 341yds and 1 td. I'm not sure how any team can rate him in the top half of the draft with so little production and injury history, although I suppose it's about projecting someone's potential. I still think he's a late round pick, and if someone picks him up sooner, so be it. It may be in a couple of years that we can gamble on a injury prone player with potential and very little college production, but I can't really see it this year. And regardless of how much Sparano talked-up our TEs, I think we draft one this year, but I don't see it being Cottam.
