How many people on this board wanted us to draft Dez Bryant or Rolando McClain or C.J. Spiller, players we didn't really need, and then justified it with saying "We should take the BPA."

Then Miami trades down, gets a very high 2nd rounder, and we end up with Jared Odrick. A DE who was the BPA at our pick. Now there is a backlash cause he doesn't fit a need?

This is how BPA works. No matter what happens during the picks before you, you take the best player available at your pick. The Dolphins brass had a board of players they liked and as each one goes they cross them off. The guy we took is the guy who was on the top of the board by the time we picked. It's as simple as that.

We're all for BPA when it's Bryant at 12 but against it when its Odrick at 28. Can't have it all.

While I agree with the premise of your post, I think McClain is more of a need player than Bryant or CJ Spiller. Just sayin'.

The Dolphins stack their board horizontally, so it's not a pure BPA strategy. It's basically BPA at core positions of need.

As usual, we have people declaring him a bad pick before he even has a chance to play a down for the Dolphins. I still remember those who said Jake Long couldn't play LT in the NFL. If Odrick is as good as a lot of people say he is then he will imrove our pressure on the quarterback and play the run well too.
If we hadn't have made this trade we would all be sitting through the second round wondering who we might of had.

Bryant - Doesn't hurt to have more than 1 good receiver...

McClain - Upgrade over Crowder, need more than Dansby in our 3-4

Spiller - Ronnie is injury prone and has 1 year left, Ricky is getting older

Our DE's are young and rotate in and out. We could have done better in this draft.

Our defensive line isn't the best at consistently causing pressure on the quarterback. If Odrick can come in and immediately provide that pressure it will instantly make the secondary and even the linebackers better, because they will have to cover their man for a shorter period of time.

We lost 16 sacks by losing Porter and Taylor. We needed to pick that back up. Merling and Langford are decent, by nothing special.

Bryant - Adding another good receiver doesn't hurt, but with Brandon Marshall on our team now, we can more than afford to wait until the second or even the third.

McClain - Had he been there at 12, then I'd agree (since I was really hoping he'd still be there). But he was selected before us.

Spiller - He was selected WAY before us, and there was absolutely NO way he could have been there by our pick.

It's not a double standard...there are just a lot of people who subscribe to BPA and a lot who subscribe to need picks...

Personally, I love the pick. Odrick was the BPA at the time and you can't argue with that philosophy...but had they taken need like Hughes or whoever, that woudl have been great too.

We have 10 more picks...we'll be fine...and if we pick up Kindle and/or Worilds and/or Burnett and/or Misi or some combination thereof, then suddenly this will be a good draft. We'll see how it goes. Heck they could even trade down again and still have a successful draft...

And clearly many people here have forgotten that the people who complained about boneheaded draft moves under Wannstedt and Cameron were lambasted as "not giviing them a chance." and "just complaining to complain." But somehow when those people were proved right, the ones who were bashing them didn't remember what they had said...

our DE's in the 3-4 aren't necessarily built to rush the passer
besides Odrick is a NT project and not a very smart pick IMO

so you don't think Bill Polian was laughing his azz off when we passed on hughes
and please don't try to tell me Polian can't recognize a BPA
not only did we not draft for need but we left the BPA on the board

Ireland himself has said that Odrick will play inside and out. Also they may not be built for it, but I wouldn't discount the importance of needing DE pressure.

    you know what?
i really don't know what to think about Ireland's drafting abilities except for he got schooled last night.
the first thing that came out of mayocks mouth when we dfrafted odrick is the kid is on the ground alot. Then they tell us they are going to use him inside and out. that spells PROJECT to me when starting prospects are being taken around you.
we will find out what Ireland does today. i'm not expecting much. at least Pat White is not on the board LOL

I'm not sure if people are saying he is not a good player and thus a bad pick. I think many people are confused about the need for another DE. This confusion probably stems from how the draft "experts" have pegged his style and capabilities.

Personally, in his previous role (DT in a 4-3), I think he is a great player. I remember reading about him back in January and people were predicting him being taken in the mid-teens. Still, I was surprised at the pick given our teams "needs." After reading Ireland's comments, though, I am less concerned. My take on what Ireland said is that the team believes he can be used or at least rotated with Solai as esssentially a NT and - if that doesn't work out - they know they have a stud DT. Sounds good to me.

Would I have rather seen Hughes or Kindle taken? Yes. Of course, today I found out that Kindle may not be able to play until 2011 - which goes to show why the FO doesn't pay much attention to us arm-chair GMs.

In any case, I don't think that most fans think Odrick sucks - I think they thought that Hughes was equally valid as a BPA and, since he fit a need, would have been a better pick.

Yeah those guys weren't on the board when we picked but I think the OP was referring to what alot of folks wanted prior to the draft that weren't entirely need positions which is why those names were brought up.

    Here's to Odrick being a HOFer! :wink2:

Maybe, the FO figured Dobbins had everything any LB we could've drafted, had? Maybe with Nolan were going more 4-3? Maybe Odrick, allows an end to come inside and be a NT, like Starks?

Odrick fits a specific Nolan scheme, according to Darlington.
    http://twitter.com/Jeff_Darlington/status/12713411349

No less than Joe Pa calls him one of the best DLs to ever come out of Penn State. He was the Big Ten Defensive Lineman of the year. There's evidence the jest was targeting him and having him line up against us would have been far worse than us facing a redundant corner. He can play inside on pass rush downs. The coaching staff fell in love with him at the Senior Bowl after seeing him up close and personal. Finally, and hopefully most persuasively, there's no way this pick would have been made without the approval or initiative of our Defensive Guru, who was Master Po when Rex was the grasshopper, so if it's good enough for him, it's good enough for me. If you don't think he knew that Hughes was out there as an option, you're just naive.

It's okay to bellyache and time will tell if the critics are right or will be force-fed humble pie, but when the firestorm of criticism seems to be predicated on knee jerk reactions, little knowledge of context and defensive plans, belief you're more savvy than one of the best league DCs, and unfamiliarity with a surprise pick, sorry but that bandwagon is leaving the station without me!

The Colts are gonna play Hughes at DE, whether he turns out to be a good pick or not is irrelevant to us passing on him because he would have played a completely different role.

I like Odrick as a player, I think he'll be a big part of our future. I'm a little disappointed we didn't pick up an OLB, but I don't think Hughes could have played SOLB very well, which is what I feel we need.
