Dolphins to tweak defense; Odrick fits new ideas http://www.miamiherald.com/2010/04/23/1594742/miami-dolphins-to-tweak-defense.html
hopefully Nolan sticks around for a few seasons to truly set this up. I have no doubt he's the intricate part of this.
interesting. but even with the tweaking, we still need another LB. I don't really hope to find one later in this draft that will start from day 1. I'm really hoping that a veteran OLB gets cut some time during training camp that we can use as a stop-gap for this season.
If we do change back to the 4-3 I think we are better on defense right away as our DL would be wake langford odrick and starks and at lb we would have dobbins crowder and dansby and all we would need on defense would be a FS
Makes sense when put in context with what Ireland had to say (or tried to say while being too cute with his words).
So we are running a hybrid to better fit our personnel, but we aren't scraping the 3-4 long term? They have been working on this 'tweak' for weeks? So, if the article is true, that means they had decided before the draft that they weren't going to have the personnel after the draft to run the pure 3-4. Wonder what positions they knew they weren't going to be able to fill? NT? Pass Rush OLB? Would seem like pass rushers were available at 12, so I am guessing they didn't figure to get a pure 3-4 nose tackle. But even then why get a Odrick? Unless you project him to be a 3-4 DE at some point in the future anyways when we move back. I don't know.
With the entire league moving to a 3-4, it makes sense to me to change it up some. Too many teams will practice against a 3-4 now. Changing it will be like teams having to practice against the Wildcat.
The article explains things and makes a lot of sense but talking about and actually making it work are two entirely different things. i like the idea of sort of eliminating the true NT position since they are so hard to find anyway. we will still have that liablity named crowder in the middle and he will have more responsibilites which scares me. all in all i think this concept is a great idea from nolan and lends more sense to why they picked odrick.
Very perceptive. Seems to indicate they didn't think very highly of Dan Williams @ NT, or more highly of Odrick as "project prototypical NT" while contributing at DE.
These things come in waves. The Patriots of the early 200os made the 3-4 popular again and the majority of the league has followed suit. Since blitzing became a bigger part of every defensive scheme, it makes sense to utilize. Same thing happened with coverages for Tampa 2. The only thing that would concern me is if we lose some beef in the middle, are we going to get run over by opposing rushing games? Also, IF this is the case...I could see us possibly going offense in the second round. Aaron Hernandez from Florida looks might fine to me right now...
We actually used this last year as well when we kicked penetrators inside. I have been saying since February that Odrick was the prototype for the NT we wanted to pair with Soliai and use on passing downs.
So Odrick was picked for his ability to rush the passer on the line first and foremost. That makes even more sense now.
Hmmm. Actually, could Taylor Mays cure our safety woes? Pairing him up with Yeremiah Bell sounds awfully attractive too...
Thanks. Yea. I think you are spot on about Dan Williams. I think the one thing we can safely ASSume, if you can safely do such a thing, is the Phins probably won't be drafting a NT in later rounds. Because if you felt like there was a quality 3-4 Nose Tackle in the draft available in the later rounds you would have picked up the pass rusher early and the NT later. Again though if we aren't scraping the 3-4 defense then you have to fit Odrick in the 3-4 scheme somewhere. Like you said either beef him up for NT or project him as your DE. You don't spend your first round draft pick on someone who comes in when we run the 4-3 but goes out of the lineup when we call the 3-4 long term. It's pretty interesting. Hopefully we will get a better idea after tonights pick.
How? We were terrible against the pass with two SSs last year. You think that pairing Bell with a downgrade of Wilson cures our S woes?
He's a bigger carbon copy of Yeremiah. We would have just kept Girbil if that were the goal :/ They need a center fielder back there, not another SS.
I think we have bigger needs at S and OLB, but knowing this regime, going BPA again isnt out of the question Put down the bottle Sam.
I had a strange feeling we might see something like this. If anything I expect perhaps even a 5-2 with Merling on the outside.
Odrick's ability to penetrate is going to go a long way. We'll pick up OLB's, but Wake and Odrick will live in the backfield. Great pick.
