So, now with us drafting Odrick, do you still think that the OP's suggestion is as ridiculous?

Odrick can play DE, or 1 gap NT.

Starks can play DE, and 1 or 2 gap NT.

McDaniel can play DE, or 1 gap NT.

.... while I think we could still draft a 2 gap plugger in the late rounds, we have the versatility on the Dline for multiple guys to play the NT position depending on the gap assignments.

Uhhh...Starks has been in the rotation as a DT since he's been here. Last year, with Soliai playing a little better, he played more DE, but he's been in the DT rotation for a while, and probably played better than Soliai in 2008.

Except they've added Odrick to replace what Starks did for us last season ??

I think the logical assumption is that someone is moving to NT. Could be Starks, I was pretty convinced originally that was what he was here for because his build is so close to Ferguson. I think the issue with Starks is how much of his explosiveness he loses gaining 15 or so pounds?

Kendall Langford shouldn't be out of consideration either. He gets pulled on most run situations and is a better run defender than pass rusher.

Kudos to the 23rd for calling this. I didn't want to move Starks because he was so good at DE last year, but I have complete faith in the decisions the team makes.

Also makes the Jared Odrick pick look smarter.

Langford-Starks-Odrick. That's a really good, young, athletic line.

Im not surprised about starks moving to NT really, Didn't he play there a bit for us last year? Pretty well too if I recall?

The thing that surprised me about all that stuff, is that we plan to start Incognito at RG... that worries me given his history. Also creates concerns for me about Thomas... how fast has he fallen off? Whats up with that guy?

I'm guessing more of an attacking 3-4 line when it's lined up that way.

I guess they looked at the draft board and decided there weren't any safeties better than the ones we had on our roster at 73. I can't fault that.

    Langford
    Starks
    Merling/Odrick

    Misi
    Dansby
    Crowder
    Wake/Anderson

    Davis
    Bell
    Culver/Clemmons
    Allen/Smith

Maybe not perfect, but we can definitely win some games with that lineup.

Yeah, Ireland talked about wanting a more athletic line that can dominate at the LOS and get to the QB. Starks moving and starting at NT and the selection of Odrick is just what they had in mind to make that happen.

Some games and the superbowl are two different things. Year 3 and I don't want to hear were rebuilding bull****.. The safety needed to be addressed its the weakness!!!!

We have some decent depth on D as well. And you know Mike Nolan will bring it. We should be able to win a lot of games with that defense.

If Culver/Clemmons can step up their game, that's a pretty impressive lineup right there.

I agree, but if we didn't like who was available, what are we supposed to do? I personally want to make a run at Sharper, if we signed him we'd be automatic favorites in the AFC East IMO.

However, our defense today on paper is better than it was last year, not to mention it will be much better coached.

On offense we've gotten rid of butterfingers and replaced him with a top 3 WR in the NFL, our QB is going into his second year starting, and we're getting key players back from injury.

Unless we lose more starters than you can count on one hand like we did last year *knock on wood* we should be just fine.

I think we all got to look at the thing as a whole right now. So far, the draft has netted Odrick, Koa Misi, John Jerry and you can't forget Brandon Marshall and Tim Dobbins.

I can see why Ireland is comfortable with Clemons and Culver. I still think they bring in someone to compete there.

First, the d-line has an amazing rotation. Langford, Starks and Odrick with Merling, Soliai, McDaniel all quality back ups. Cameron Wake, Koa Misi on the outside...and I'm still expecting more selections at those positions. Dansby, Crowder and Dobbins inside. Also able to kick Misi inside, Dansby outside. You give yourself a lot of versatility.

This should be a much more aggressive attacking defense. One thing I look at is these are all players that they got a close look at in the Senior Bowl so far. They're all hard workers that give you their all every time.

When you combine the actual picks with Dobbins and Marshall, I think we've had a stellar 3 rounds so far. And we still have 7 picks to go...not to mention there could still be movements of players.

No defense is ever going to be perfect. The two teams in the SB had weaknesses on defense...they were just good enough. We'll be able to get some good pressure on the passer....more from the DL...and hopefully we'll get another player tomorrow to help out in Dbackfield. But this has been a good month for us.

I would like to see us add a TE and offensive speed now, though I could see some defense still to develop.

And our offense should be potent. We are only missing a game changing TE.

Next year we'll only need a TE and S. Thats a good place to be.

Yeah he nailed that. Actually there are a few on the board that ought to apologize to the guy for some of their remarks when he suggested it.
Moving forward though, our DL now seems set.

Starks said, "I'm at home in there" about being a NT. I'm going to believe him and the coaches and say it's a good move instead of people on here that don't agree. If he sucks they move him back, but he has played before and did well. I think he'll be great. People have done this before. How do you know he wont be even better at NT???

Apologize? Please. I've made the same suggestion about Starks for a couple of months in various threads in the Club Level and generally got shot down too. Now merely because Ireland says Starks will move inside, I don't feel anyone owes me an apology for disagreeing back then.

Wake-Odrick-Starks-Merling is a frightening four man rush on every play.

As far as run defense we'll see about that. Soliai will spell him often. My guess is that the scheme is a 1-gapper though with a heavy emphasis on penetration from all defensive linemen, which is how I've always preferred the defensive line to line up especially in a pass heavy league. I hate 2-gap New England style 3-4s regardless so it's a good move.

Starks will probably be about the most athletic NT in the league though. Jay Ratliff isn't taking up multiple blockers in the way a Haloti Ngata is on every play, so it's fine in that sense.
