Kiper had Clausen #4 on his draft board and wasn't drafted until #48......I've always hated Kiper. I'd like to know Mayock's grade.
Kiper is so up his own *** that I really don't care what he thinks. The FO thinks they're going to be good players, and we'll find out over the next 3 years. If Kiper was so good at evaluating talent, teams would be lined up to pay him hand over fist money.
If NE would have used a draft pick for a stud WR like Marshall, everyone would include it in their grade.
What Kiper fails to realize or understand is all of these guys fill a need, and have certain qualities that made them appealing to the FO. In other words, they "fit" the profile of what the FO was looking for. I think it's also fair to say the FO went into the draft with their board "set," and they did not deviate. That's what they do. The had a plan, and they stuck to it. In the end, I believe we came out of the draft in much better shape (than we were before it). I think Odrick, Misi, Edds and Jones were all rock solid picks.
OK. If I don't care too much for his analysis before the draft why am I going to care what he thinks after the draft?
mel was apparently pretty high on vernon he had him going 6 to the jets in one of his mocks. after the jets drafted vernon, mel said " lining up opposite of pace, vernon should get plenty of sacks this year".
the MiamiDolphins have been kippered again the guy is in bed w/RexRyan & BillBelichek Mel has never liked the Dolphins he "kippers" us every chance he gets personally, I avoid his opinionated anti-Miami comments, whenever possible Mel Kiper is just another arrogant, prejudiced, outspoken, know-nothing, would-be pundit, slinging crap
IMO, I am not a Kiper fan as he is a 1st round "stater of the obvious" as we call him. I honestly believe that Miami had one to two things in mind. Physical football players, Upside in potential and high motors! IMO, very good draft...especially considering there wasn't a 2nd round pick. Essentially, Miami received Brandon Marshall in the draft this year without losing anything this year. Truly a very good draft!
czarnecki from fox gives miami an A. http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/NFL-Draft-grades-every-team-bradford-tebow-042410
I Dont really care what Mel Kiper Said Our Main Goal in that draft was to Speed Up our defense because our defense was very slow last year and we did just that All we need is a ball hawking safety and our defense will be stronger
The true testament of how good our draft was will be evaluated on the grid-iron, and not around the network water cooler. Kiper should wait four months and then evaluate our picks.
Hello my friend, Kiper flip/flopped on him. You will find articles and comments by Kiper both for and against him, and then said next to nothing when he was drafted. Watch the flick... I wonder how many people would love him if he said we had the best draft in the afc and were going to the superbowl ?
Someone should grade Mel Kiper and all these analysts who make a living out of being "draft guru's." I bet Kiper wouldn't even get a "C" in his job evaluation. I bet other then maybe getting four out of the first five picks correct, guys like Mel are lucky to maybe get one in ten picks correct.
This is funny about Mel Kiper. Check it out.......... http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20070504082447AAg2fWR
Pat White....mistake. Patrick Turner...who knows since he never sniffed playing time. Hartline...solid. Still...it doesn't mean that we couldn't fill needs at KR, RB, and TE.
jury is out on the TWO PATS, in all probability, they will find their way to contribute to the game this year no problems anywhere accept for some uncertainty @ TE & FS should have a grueling preseason program: w/ plenty of iron, raw meat & discipline on the menu competition is the elixir of success & there will be competition
Kiper still refuses to acknowledge Jake Long as an elite LT. I'd be worried as hell then asking Kiper to grade and predict a draft is like asking King to tell you who will win on Sunday.
I think this is a bit harsh, though the first paragraph (which I omitted) is how I feel about Kiper. If you view what he says considering what he is looking at, it both makes sense and can be useful in analyzing what happened. I think the football angle is a far more interesting one. This draft made a statement that the front office was concerned with the defensive front 7 more than anything else. They clearly disagree with CW about the need for a safety (for one of a number of possible reasons). When you consider that perspective, there are two questions that have to be answered: 1) Is the front office right about what this team needs? AND 2) Given that focus on the front 7, did they pick the best players for the team? I think the jury is very much out on #2, but I frankly think I agree with the focus on the front 7. It conforms to what I recall seeing as a big weakness with this team last year. Considering who is now gone, it makes even more sense to focus efforts there. I can only hope there are a couple of starters and a couple of decent role players in that grouping of players they picked.
Not sure if anyone posted this, but I believe Kiper got 5 right out of 32 the 1st round. If any of us had that type of production at our jobs or at school, we would be unemployed or flunked.
I don't think it's harsh at all. Kiper is in the business of commenting on the draft, meaning he projects college prospects to the NFL. The problem with Kiper is that he barely knows anything about the NFL. This is why Mayock and Casserly are better: they know both the college prospects coming out and about the 32 teams that are going to draft them. They're in a much better position to comment about the impact of a pick than Kiper is for that very reason. And yes, Kiper has bashed teams for not following his board in the past. Unlike Mayock, when a team makes a move that goes against his board, Kiper's reaction is to question the team. Mayock's reaction is to re-examine the pick and the team and offer his opinion as to what the team is thinking. Mayock adapts: Kiper complains.
Spot on! The only other things I would add is Mayock also attends not only the combine but all of the Pro days. On top of that it has been reported that he is also the only one of the bunch that has access to the coaches tape that all the teams watch.
Kiper is very good at what he does, entertaining and creating interest to help ESPN sell advertising. He is knowledgeable and get's paid to be opinionated. Like most talking heads, he is right on some and wrong on others. Whether he's applauding the moves of a team or bashing the moves, it creates interest and conversations as shown in this very thread. The thing we have to keep in mind is if he was so good at evaluating talent teams would shell out big money for his services. It's a lot like the recruiting services for college football that create more fan interest. They are probably right more than they are wrong but it isn't an exact science. At the end of the day, you either trust Parcells & co or you don't. I think they have demonstrated a pretty good ability to draft talent. We have to keep in mind that Marshall was a part of this draft. There was no other team that got an immediate pro bowl player out of the draft besides Miami. That in of itself makes this a great draft.
I don't know why NFL teams don't draft strictly from Kiper's "Big Board". Mel Kiper and people who believe in him think his "Big Board" is the Holy Grail of the NFL draft. I watched the draft on ESPN and it didn't look like Gruden, Steve Young and the other guys had much respect for Kiper. Berman kind of looked like he snickered at Kiper a couple of times. I don't know, maybe it was just my perception because I dont like him very much. If Kiper knew half as much as he thinks he knows, he would be a GM or scout for an NFL team and they would be a pernnial Super Bowl Champ.
I really don't see where Mike Mayock is any better than Kiper... Pat White was one of Mayock's favorite players last draft and when the Dolphins picked him, he could hardly contain himself from rubbin one out under the desk. I don't see a need for any of those guys....you want to know how good a player is? Go to UniversalDraft.com, see what they say and then find or request a video on the player from them and see what you think yourself. Your odds at hitting a pick are about as good as anyone's.
The argument isn't that Mayock is always right, it's that he's got a better sense of NFL team needs than Kiper, and is therefore a better source of draft-related punditry. Charlie Casserly as well. And really, Mayock was hardly alone with the "WildPat" thinking. The sports media in general was stroking off to that draft pick, probably because it gave them another six months of Wildcat headlines that they could use to cover up their lack of knowledge about the Dolphins.
That's really not the end all and be all of draft-related punditry, though. Mel provides a good BPA baseline if you believe in his rankings, and it can be helpful to have that sort of pure view at things.
Just going to give some context on who Mel Kiper is. He is hair. Hair that once predicted Former NFL draft pick Ryan Leaf as only 3% worse than Peyton Manning. Kiper also predicted Mike Williams, yes, THE Mike Williams (of Detroit Lions fame), as a Hall of Famer. Kiper predicted the Pats to go 0-16 in 2001. If you are more than 14 years old, you know they won a Super Bowl that year. When the Colts picked Marshall Faulk, Kiper proclaimed that with picks like those, the Colts would forever be at the top of the draft. Marshall Faulk looks to be a first ballot Hall of Famer. Kiper projected Akili Smith as a top tier NFL QB. Kiper also projected Adam Steuer, possibly the only former NFL player without a Wikipedia page, as a Hall of Famer. I'm only afraid of the fact that Kiper likes Odrick.
His picks weren't all bad. He was right about us regretting not drafting Brady Quinn. ... oh wait....
^^^^^^^^^ THIS. I don't see the need for draft prognosticators at all outside of the interest they generate in the event itself during a period of relative calm in the sport. I'm slowly returning to baseball after all these years, but basketball has never really held my interest, so when football is down, so is my sports libido. The draft energizes that a bit and for that I thank the many yappin' noggins. However, if you were ever to empirically examine their results year after year, and really what sounds more boring than doing that, I think you would find that any one of us would have the same batting average, so to speak. Kiper is star struck but the transition from college to pro is a great one and different players adapt differently and not just the star players. IIRC, Koa Misi was a 2-star coming into UTAH and became a 2nd round pick. I think he'll have a tremendous career, and yes, I am a bit biased.
