I'm forwarding these simply because I smile every time I realize that we traded one of the most timid WRs in the game and got this guy to replace him. It gives me a warm fuzzy:

"Marshall is known for his ability to break and dodge tackles.[6] He led all NFL wide receivers in yards after first contact for the 2007 NFL season.[5] Regarding Marshall's breakaway ability, Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Brandon Flowers said, "Brandon Marshall is a defensive lineman playing wide receiver. He wants to inflict punishment on you. He wants you to try to tackle him so he can shove you off of him and get more yards."[6]

Oakland Raiders cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha said Marshall is "the toughest guy to bring down, one-on-one."[7]"

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brandon_Marshall

``It puts them on par with New England and the Jets,'' Collinsworth said. ``If he gets his act together, he's a star. He plays like a younger Terrell Owens.

Simms called the trade ``a tremendous deal for the Dolphins. You don't get over the hump without that No. 1 receiver. You are not going to get it in the draft because they're not NFL ready. Marshall affects defenses by drawing double teams. It changes everything.''

Where does Marshall rank among NFL receivers? Simms said four receivers stand alone -- Larry Fitzgerald, Andre Johnson, Marshall and Vincent Jackson. CBS' Charley Casserly, the former Redskins/Texans general manager, said he ranks Marshall seventh -- behind Fitzgerald, Johnson, Jackson, Reggie Wayne, Lee Evans and Carolina's Steve Smith.

``Marshall is a heck of a player,'' Casserly said, indicating that giving up two second-round picks isn't too onerous because the Dolphins have to believe ``we can get one of those twos back. Maybe we can get both back.''

That's what I have been saying for a while and why getting BM was such a critical move.

And ranking BM behind Evans is a joke. The others I could see even if I don't agree with them. IMO, Simms ranking is more realistic. Those four guys are special, individual biases may vary the order, but they should be at the top of every list. Steve Smith (Car) used to be up there but injuries and QB issues brought him down a level last year.

Evans is a joke, but I don't see Marshall in my top 5. Not in specific order, but there is Fitz (although he had a down year for him) Wayne, Andre Johnson, Moss (age is a factor but he's still better) Jackson, Roddy White (slightly). Guys that are roughly equal, or up and coming are many. Steve Smith (NYG), the original Steve Smith but he may be on the downside, Sidney Rice, Desean Jackson, Miles Austin, Santonio Holmes, all in my opinion, have either similar years or is on an upswing. Desean jackon depressingly had a much better season.

We're all dazzled with Brandon marshall's 11 or 20 catch games. But they lost both those games. he's not getting 21 catches with a 15 ypc, it's 10 ypc. Maybe that's a factor with Orton, as he had more of those games with Cutler so perhaps well see him revert to that.

Ted ginn vs buffalo. Next leading receiver was ricky with 43 yards. top rusher was ronnie with ... 43 yards. I'm saying, I'd like to see a higher YPC. Every looks at catches, and yardage, both are very important, but nobody looks at them together via ypc.

EDIT: Criminally underrated is Roddy White. Better stats than Brandon up an down.

no way is it even close between marshall and lee evans.....he is also currently better than smith. Smith in his prime was better but he is starting to age and it shows. Marshall is number 5 right now if you ask me.

I'd probably rank him #6 personally. I've got Johsnon, Wayne, Fitz, Jackson, Roddy. Moss is currently better IMO, but at his age, he can fall off the cliff anyday so I'd def take Marshall.

I'd rank Desean Jackson higher IF, and only if, he can reproduce similar numbers with Kolb. The one game Kolb had that was good, Jackson tore it up. So it's wait and see on him, Austin, and Sidney Rice.

When Marshall on, he can play as good as anyone IMO. I agree with Fitzgerald, johnson, moss over Marshall.....probably Wayne too. I think players like white, Vincent and desean are as good on a typical basis, but Marshall has another level that he hits and can take over an entire game IMO. White does it almost alone, I'm not sold on V. Jackson as being elite...he's good, solid #1, but not a super star IMO. Maybe I'm a homer, but SD has a lot of weapons, and rivers is possibly the most accurate QB for hitting receivers in stride. I'd take Marshall over VJ, desean, any day.

No doubt in my mind Marshall is top 5, the way he runs routes, goes up and fights for & comes down with the ball, his size and physicality are all at the top of the charts. We are going to LOVE watching Henne to Marshall the next few years

Most of what you said is valid and your opinion, but I cannot let the bold part go! Rivers is the WORST at hitting his receivers in stride. The Worst. he always gets it to them, but it's almost always inevitably breaks their stride. Living in SD, I watch every single game. it is a very common complaint. I noticed it first when Chambers went over there because well i followed Chambers being a former dolphin. It's something that was actually brought up a bit at the beginning of the season when they were in a mini funk. That Rivers tends to hit his WRs when they break free deep, but doesn't give them a chance to get more yardage. it's typically underthrown, and VJ et. al. use their superior height and strength to muscle for the ball. Maybe it's by design.

Davone Bess had more YAC then any WRs on the Chargers:
    http://stats.washingtonpost.com/fb/leaders.asp?range=AFC&type=Receiving&rank=231&year=

And I will put forth Desean has shown he can take over a game just as much as Brandon. At leats when it comes to analyzing stats, Desean has some very very dominant performances. And for explosion, Brandon has 10 catches for 20+, 4 for 40+. Desean 18 catches for 20+ and 10 catches for 40+. Brandon gets a lot of passes, but they are also dink and dunks. A lot of it. we all know chunk yardage is more desirable, although the dink and dunk stuff is necessary, we have 2 very good WRs at that already.

Don't get me wrong, very excited about Brandon Marshall. But I just think some may be vastly overrating him.

Basing it just on what they do on the field I would rate BM even with Andre Johnson and Fitz and ahead of every other player mentioned in this thread. If I were including the off-field issues or if it were a fantasy ranking he'd be lower. But when I include his run blocking along with his receiving then IMO he's top 3. And that was my opinion before he ever became a Dolphin.

Yes, because we all know the Eagles and the Broncos had equivalent offenses last year. The Eagles are one of the most pass happy teams in the NFL and had much better offensive weapons less Jackson than the Broncos did less Marshall.

Everyone seems to be focused on the Evans ranking, which is high to say the least. But Evans compared to Ginn in an earlier post? Uh, no. Marshall is imo a top 5 WR, and is either the most physical WR or 2nd to Andre Johnson, who is in my estimation the best WR in the league, with L Fitzgerald right up there.

But the beauty is getting a top 5 WR and watching him run over, through around and by DBs next year, as opposed to the prospect of watching Ginn drop balls and wimp out game after game. Marshall will inspire the fans and players that Ginn deflated. That is a beautiful upgrade- arguably the least physical WR in the NFL replaced by arguably the most physical WR in the game. As to kickoff returns- let Cobb, Sheets or someone else do them. Punt returns- Bess handled that, not Ginn- 'nuff said. No guarantees in life but the Marshall trade was beautiful, and the Ginn trade was refreshing, cathartic, and necessary. It was time to take out the trash, and they did.

I would say it's more decisions like David Carr at #1 overall, which of course was counterbalanced by his passing on the Reggie Bush hype machine and drafting Mario Williams.

Simms said if he were the Dolphins, he still would not trade Ted Ginn Jr., who is being shopped. ``He's a great returner and could be a specialist on offense,'' Simms said.

I happen to agree with this opinion and it may come back to bite us during the season when if we cant get a return game going and if Marshall should be out of Action for any reason.

Ginn would have been more effective as a specialist WR IMO.
They say it takes 3 yrs for a WR to come into his own .Well it could be 4 yrs in Ginns case and the niners will benefit from the 3 yrs of on the job training we invested in him.

I read what Simms said about Ginn and I disagree. Ginn had become a cancer on our team and had to go. Maybe Ginn will do well in SF under Singletary, we'll see. We recouped a 5th rd pick with the trade and took Nolan Carroll. Given a choice between Ginn and Carroll I'd gladly take Carroll.

If Marshall goes down someone else will have to step up. By the end of last year, on the worst WR core in the league, Ginn was relegated to special teams and spot duty at best at WR. Over the last 11 games of the season averaged 23.5 yds/game and had zero touchdowns- he had every opportunity last year to step up and couldn't do it. The subject up Ginn has been explored ad nauseum on this site, but the botton line is that I'm glad that he's gone and Marshall is here.

    Padre,

In that video, those broken tackles were awsome. Notice the seperation from the corner who was on pace to make that touchdown saving tackle. He had the angle and was at full speed when Marshall was coming out of the tackle. BM was able to pull away from him. Now thats impressive. Who says he does not have the speed?

Cancer :pity: I am so tired of people using clichés, I am even more tired of people misusing them. Brandon Marshall was far more of a “cancer” to his team than Ted Ginn last year. Show me one video of Ginn dogging it in practice. Show me him getting benched for fighting with his coaches. Show me his teammates having to answer questions about his off the field behavior. I can show you all of that with Marshall. You didn’t like the way Ginn played, fine, but don’t start trying to make every negative cliché fit Ginn.

Usually I find your posts insightful and well thought out, but that comment seems totally out of left field to me. I saw or heard of no evidence of Ginn being a cancer. He may have not lived up to his potential, but nothing he did or said indicated cancer to me. He did not have to go either for that matter. His speed may have complimented BMarsh quite well. If Nolan Carroll doesn't pan out, the trade of Ginn for a 5 will fall under the category of stupid, IMO.

Cancer in the context of disheartening the team and the fans by all too often running out of bounds, seldom fighting for extra yards, and being downright inept at catching the ball on a regular basis. I stand by my comment, but I'll downgrade it to "melanoma". He played without heart and courage and he had to go.

Broncos pass attempts per game: 34.9.
Eagles pass attempts per game? 34.6.

Your second argument goes both ways. With more options for the eagles QB to go to, Jackson still gets the ball, and still put up great numbers.

Well, keep in mind that speed on the football field for an offensive player largely shows itself when a inferior Defender tries to make a play, he was shrugging off would be tacklers like they were pee wee football players, however that doesn't make him "fast" it does make him a good open field runner with the ball.

figure 2/10ths of second, ie the difference between 4.3 and 4.5 speed is about 5 steps on the football field, maybe less, maybe 3 steps, all the extra 2/10ths of a second does is allow the defender some cushion to make a play and with BMarsh, typically 4.3 40 defenders are around 180 ish and under 6 ft tall, meaning exactly what one sees happening should be happening, some 180 pd 4.3 guy trying to tackle a 6'4 235 pd 4.5 guy, the 180 pd dude will slough right off of them.

Once that first tackle is missed, then that 3 step cushion doesn't mean very much as it is rare to have two defenders ontop of each other trying to cover a Receiver.

I'm not writing thesis papers here, so I'm not overly concerned with the exact definition of cancer. The term refers, in my usage, to my opinion that Ginn had to be cut, or removed if you will, from the team. Kind of like a cancer or melanoma being cut out from an otherwise healthy body. That doesn't mean that he was a trouble maker or a bad guy. All of these comments over one word choice- amazing. Bottom line- Ginn had to go, and he went.

I was one who thought there would be good use for Ginn in a spot situation rather than trading him for a 5th round pick. I can imagine, however, a situation where keeping Ginn on would not only crowd a corp of reliable WRs, and Bess, Cam, Hartline are very reliable, but there is also a "message" value in moving him out: despite your being a good "citizen", having "world class" physical talent, doing all the work, being dedicated, being a high draft pick, you have to produce. So, no he absolutely was not a "cancer", but rather his continued presence on the roster was inconsistent with the demands this regime commuincates to the team.

Consider me in the camp of people that is still perplexed by the Ginn trade. While he never lived up to a first round pick, he still had a unique skill set that was useful to our team. Anyone who says otherwise must have been passed out drunk during the last 3 Jets games. And I still say if Ginn could only perform against the Jets he was still worth hanging onto. I think it's reasonable to assume with Brandon Marshall on the team Ginn may have been able to develop into a Devery Henderson type WR.

I hope I'm wrong, but I think we will end up regretting getting rid of Ginn. Especially for only a 5th round pick. But let me be clear in that I'd much rather Nolan Carroll turns into our own version of Revis and we forget all about Ted Ginn. However, I think it's safe to say the odds are against that.

I'm also in the camp that getting rid of Ginn may be something we regret. I understand that some fans had an emotional response to Ginn, but he had a specific skill set that we lack. That skills set could have dovetailed nicely with the rest of the team. Fact of the matter is that he was a potential play maker for a team that didn't have enough of them.
