Will Allen declares himself fine, and ready for OTAs The free safety snippet should not be overlooked!
I reeally would like to see the move to FS, I don't want Vontae and Sean getting any less playing time this season, I just feel they will develop together into one of the top 2-3 CB tandems in the AFC.
both Will & Jason Allen will compete for FS that is a no-brainer got to fix the Achilles heel before the opener
Rashad Jones is being given the opportunity to compete for the job as well. That's also not to say we will be players for Otogwe. A lot of variables right now before the season starts.
experience, experience, experience there is no substitute @ FreeSafety it is the last line of defense & sports the best vision of the entire game-field they will not nor can they start a rookie both Allens are serious considerations
i like the sound of will allen moving to free safety. i remember him getting a lot of PI calls last season. at safety he shouldnt be close enough to get one of those calls untill its necessary. i think he was also smith and davis' mentor last season. that would be great for them both to be starting while their mentor is backing them up on the field. he will know both of their strengths and weaknesses already. which one is more likely to need help against which reciever or route they are running. will allen will know his job he will know smith and davis' jobs he has the experience both in being a veteran and already having worked with bell, smith, davis and most of our coaches already. if he comes back healthy and becomes our starting free safety, or even a starting corner again, i wouldnt be surprised if he was a captain.
Will Allen may have something to say about that. Smith and Davis are coming along fine, but a healthy WA and either Smith or Davis is a better tandem than Smith and Davis...at least right now. Another year of play and that may change, due to both Allen's age and the added experience of the youngsters, but not just yet... So, whoever ends up as the nickel guy, is an upgrade over last year, although Jones had a decent year in that role... EDIT: That assumption of mine that WA and either youngster is a better tandem is contingent on WA being completely healthy and recovered from the ACL... It may take him time to work into shape, despite his proclamations that he's healthy....the real thing hasn't started yet...
I disagree. JA is at least a 4th FS or CB whichever they have him play. The thing that I don't know is how much different Nolan works his FS and whether or not JA can adjust yet again, back to FS quick enough. Either way, JA makes this team if for nothing more than his STs prowess...
When it comes to all the switches and variables and personnel change on defense... I have no idea what's goin' on...
I just do not see Sean Smith doing much next year. IF W. Allen is fine from his injury, I certainly think he is the one to beat opposite of Vontae. Certainly, Davis has earned a starting spot; the kid is just a stud in the making. Smith, on the other hand, did not impress. He's somewhat (dare I say?) overrated. He lacks that explosion towards the ball/play. His tackling could be better. He lacks that quick change of direction, which can definitely be a liability (and has). He does not have the body control of the smaller Davis. I just do not see Smith really doing anything next year. IMO, he is a 3-year project. I do not even have him "starting" next year. He might come around, but by what I have seen thus far, I think W. Allen is the guy who starts opposite of Davis.
