always more to it than money. money can be negotiated, problems in character can't. think about it.

Not really. Its a combination of all of it probably. character + ability = how much money they think you are worth.

not really. You are saying it is because of character concerns, therefore money they pay/paid him is not as big of a factor. I am saying the character concerns along with ability will dictate how much money he gets/ should recieve. Therefore if he wants more and they don't think he is worth the money they let him go.

believe we are saying the same thing. I certainly wouldn't disagree w/ you on this issue:
character + talent vs. money = gone

Roth thinks he's worth a lot more than he really is. I mean what has he actually done besides make a couple of plays and a few sacks in his 6 year career? His tackles are average and quite frankly his play is not that great.

Charachter has really not been an issue. Since he came out of college he's been fairly quiet.

If we let him go because of money/value, then you'd think he'd learn his lesson.

While it's very likely that contract issues might have been a part of the decision to dump Roth, there has to be something more behind it. He was a serviceable OLB. Yes, we had JT and JP. Both had their weaknesses, as did Roth. If there wasn't some other reason (whatever the issue was, we don't know) getting rid of him mid-season made no sense. Even if they felt JP and JT were better OLBs, he'd still have been a better option than Anderson or Q Moses for the remainder of last season....

Just my 2 cents, but there was some other issue at hand other than money...

I knew that was what he was up to last season, his groin was fine, he wanted a new contract, he wound up in Cleveland and gosh, he wants a new contract.

Roth has made the jump to SOLB successfully as with the Brownies he was a beast late in the year, but the Parcell's and Co don't play.

Yeah I think that's the heart of the issue. Roth is over valuing himself. He's not that elite pass rushing OLB that teams will over pay to get. While he's a good LB, his level of play is pretty easy to either replace or compensate for.

maybe he just wants to try his luck and see what he gets?

    it's douchey, but entirely possible.

I love the way ROth plays, but......

He seems more like a girl crying over spilled milk and doesn't even understand his other hand has a full glass in it.

Love him as a player but he's a mental midget.

Yeah, but he already played that game. He's not worth what he thinks he is and he should have learned that lesson the first time.

What he should do is sign the 1 year tender the Browns has offered and play his butt off this year. Then he will get the money he thinks he deserves.

Problem is, there is a strike looming and right now is his best shot at getting a large check before a new CBA/strike happens.

There was more to it. Doesn't anyone remember his DUI in Iowa after his rookie year ? That + not much production/underachiever + contract loudmouth = Gone under a Parcells run organization.

not much production? he was an excellent run stuffer and had 5 sacks in 2008. not bad for a guy who isn't really a pass rusher and transitioned to the OLB position from DE in just one offseason. He had 4 sacks for the Browns in six games last year. maybe he is over valuing himself a bit but to say he doesn't produce and is an underachiever is ridiculous. there is no way in hell the FO should have let a 26 year old developing player walk without being comped. I still say we screwed up regardless of the bashing he takes from bitter fans.

He is nothing special in his first 4 years and his statistics show this!! He was drafted as a DE that was relentless, with a knack of getting to the Qb.

He was given a chance to switch to OLB and showed ONLY promise that he might be able to handle it. The next year, he is sitting on the sidelines, claiming to be injured, while the rest of the team was working their butts off! He wanted more money, and it was apparently more than what TWO teams think he's worth.

There is nothing bitter about a fan thinking he's over valued himself. There is also nothing wrong with letting a player walk, who wanted more than his worth, and tried to place that team in a hostage situation to get it...
