So my buddy just got this mammoth of a TV. It's a Sony kp-57ws510. It's a bit older (2003 i think?) but he got a real nice deal on it. Anyways, we were tryin to hook the xbox to HD, but it didn't work. The screen was all messed up and fuzzy when we tried it. Whats the issue here? Is this not an HD-built in TV? Does he need to get an HD reciever? Im not even quite sure what that means, but it sounds like a possible solution.

Were all puzzled here...and none of us really know anything about TV's. Any help would be appreciated.

Googling the TV, it is an HDTV. I'm not the expert on this, but older HDTV (some of em) cannot display in the 720p resolution. Your TV seems to have 1080i but not 720p. Not sure if that's an issue here. The 360 should be auto selecting based on the TV anyways.

What kind of connection are you using? Component or HDMI?

Click on the Operating Instructions manual.

Page 14 of the pdf shows the rear connections (use video 5 or 6 connections).

You need component/yipper cables (Y, Pb, Pr - identified by Green, Blue, Red), and it looks like the tv can only handle 720p and 1080i.

Page 26 details how to hook up to the HD connections.

If you use the standar 360 connectors, be sure the switch is flipped to "hdtv."

This TV may not be compatible though as it says it's not configured for use with a PC (essentially what a 360 is), and on page 28 says:
While not a digital TV receiver, the 360 most certainly has VGA outputs.

If you hooked the 360 up to video 5/6 on the rear panel, and had the 360 video cable properly configured (by that I mean "hdtv" selected with the switch), I'd say your buddy is pretty much out of luck. He may be able to circumvent the TV's hardware/software limitations with an AV receiver, but I'm not 100% sure.

i had an older mitsubishi that had this problem. you have to make sure the settings on the xbox are set to 1080i, it actually doesnt auto select the resolution, since the tv cant communicate back. my mits didnt have 720 either, just 480i, 480p and 1080i and the 720 setting just made it unviewable.

HAHA. I did that too when I got divorced, her Lexus was in both of our names so I sold it for 100 bucks to my friend and then when it was done and over I bought it back. It was epic.

UPDATE: switching the resolution on the xbox didnt do anything...still get the same thing. Like stitches said, it says vga doesnt work with the tv. I have an hdmi cable...but the tv has no where to plug that in.

Is there a cable I could get that would allow me to hook up the xbox to HD? Im gonna keep looking, but once again I really have no idea what im doing

edit: pretty sure i have HD component cables now that I looked up the difference between vga and component... not sure why this isn't working...a guy in that forum stitches showed me said he has his 360 hooked up with component cables into input 5... this is puzzling...

You might be able to use a hdmi/dvi switch, but I'm not certain.

By the way, it's always possible that the connections on the set are f'd up and need to be repaired/replaced.

Legacy sets aren't exactly the most supported thing by companies today, and I doubt anyone at tech support could tell you anything that isn't found in the manual. Honestly I'm a bit surprised to even see them have the manual on their website.

I used to have an older RCA HDTV, it was HD ready, but needed an HD source in order to output HD signals. From looking at the panel on the back of your tv in the instruction manual, it appears you have to hook it up similar to how I hooked my 360 up to my old RCA projection tv. If you have the 360 component video cable, make sure its switched to HD, and then plug the cable into your xbox, then the colored ends into the tv, as long as they're color co-ordinated (you should have red, green, and blue for video, and then the red and white for your audio). Make sure your xbox is set to the proper resolution for the TV. It appears your tv should get 480i, 480p, 720p and 1080i. Then all you should have to do is switch the TV to the proper source, which looks like it would be video 5, or video 6.

If you've hooked it up properly you should be okay. If not, then try hooking the xbox up to another HD tv. See if it works there? If not, then maybe your 360 is the issue. If it works elsewhere, then maybe the TV is the issue. Try hooking up a DVD player with a component video cable into the same port, and try it as well. If it doesnt work either, then you know the tv is probably the issue.

    good luck.
