Phil Hughes had a really solid outing tonight. That was good to see, he is going to need to pitch like that all season.

The bats are dead though, but, the bullpen is looking fantastic.

Apparently Derek Jeter though it would funny to fart on his pillow...

He's 21 years old and you don't turn into Cy Young overnight or by hype. I personally think Hughes is going to be good but he hasn't had a lot of command on his pitches this year especially his off speed stuff so players are sitting dead red on his fastball and pounding him. He should be fine in the long run but expectations of him this year were very unfair to him.

Robbie Cano, don't ya know? He finally broke out of his slump tonight. He needs to get his bat going. Jeter is back too and comes up clutch as usual.

Rivera looks absolutely dominant early in the season.

As for Hughes, he really hasn't been able to pitch in great conditions yet. In Boston though, he was getting his fastball up in the 93-94 MPH range with good breaking stuff. He just needs to gain confidence in his fastball and work on his command.

Same as last year with Yanks this point in the season....very inconsistent and shocking Moose is our stopper YTD.

Last year we got on a huge hot streak...looks like we will need to do the same thing and with Posada back maybe just maybe we have more consistency with the bats. Need the arms to get on a roll and go deep most nights.

First and foremost, get above .500 and remain there and let July, Aug be our huge months with momentum into Sept and Oct as per usual.

LOL, yeah if someone would have told me at this point in the season the Yanks will have a 9 game winner (tied for best in the AL) and the AL Batting leader, I would have figured they would be in first place. The good news is once the rest of the team wakes up... They should be pretty well off. I mean Moose the 9 game winner? WHO in their right mind predicted that? Matsui the batting leader? Another surprise. Once, Jeter and Cano get rolling, and Posada comes back this team becomes much more formidable. The key, IMO is Wang and Pettite need to wake up.

My best guess is that he disappeared into the same hole that our CLUTCH-hitting has hid in. We get leads, cant hold them, we trail, get guys on base and cant produce....a deadly combination in the wrong direction.

Seriously, 0-27 when trailing after 8 innings.

EDIT - woohooo...make that 1-0 starting 6/5/08 with a 2 run pinch-hit, walk-off, HR by Jason Giambi!!!!!! woohooo.....maybe, just maybe this is the start of bigger and better things.

    1st Round pick (#28 overall)

    Player Name: Gerrit Cole
    Position: Starting Pitcher
    School: Orange Lutheran HS (Calif.)
    School Type: High School
    Academic Class: Senior
    Birthdate: 09/08/90
    Height: 6'3"
    Weight: 195 lbs.
    Bats: Right
    Throws: Right
    Report Date(s): 03/08/08
    Game(s): Tesoro HS

    Focus Area: Comments
Fastball: Cole was throwing 95-98 mph early and settled in at 92-94 throughout his start.

Fastball movement: He usually has plus arm-side sink and bore, though he was fairly straight in this outing.

Slider: It's an average pitch now, which he throws 78-82 mph, but it projects as a plus pitch in the future. It has some depth coming from a 3/4 arm angle.

Changeup: It's a little too firm at 79-80 mph, but he's got a good feel for it.

Control: He's an above-average strike-thrower for a high schooler, letting his stuff work for him in the zone.

Poise: His makeup on the field can be an issue, as he gets animated with umpires and teammates at times.

Physical Description: Cole is a projectable high school right-hander who compares a bit to Kyle Farnsworth.

    Medical Update: Healthy.

Strengths: His projectability and his stuff, with the ability to throw three average to plus pitches, and to throw them for strikes.

Weaknesses: He has some mechanical issues with his delivery, with an arc in the back and a tendency to throw across his body; he gets too emotional on the mound.

Summary: A projectable high school right-hander with the capability already to throw a fastball up into the upper 90s is bound to garner interest. Throw in a future plus slider and a changeup, all for which he can throw for strikes, and it's no wonder Cole is considered one of the top prep pitchers in the class. He's going to have to work out some kinks in his delivery and he's got Scott Boras as an advisor, but neither of those issues should keep him from being drafted early.

Any comparison to Kyle Farnsworth is a concern!!!!!!!!

Can we just take Kyle Farnsworthless out to the shed, beat him with a golf club and leave him bleeding in the moonlight for the wolves? Please? Taking Joba out of the pen is also already coming back to bite us in the arse. Nice move Hank.

Hank Steinbrenner will ruin this organization.

    2008 COMPENSATION PICK:

    Jeremy Bleich

    Class: Junior

    Hometown: Metairie, LA

    High School: Isidore Newman School

    College: Stanford

    Height / Weight: 6-2 / 190

    Position: LHP

    Experience: 2V

    Bats/Throws: L/L

General: Probably had the best season of any Stanford pitcher in 2007 and again during the summer and fall of 2007 • Has an improved fastball and arguably the best curveball and changeup on the team • Feels as good physically as he has during his Stanford career and looking for a huge 2008 season • Has an opportunity to return to his role as the team's ace • Had a high level of baseball experience prior to Stanford having already played on the USA Junior National Team • Has a fastball in the upper 80's to low 90's • His fastball has good movement and is tough to pick up • Features a good mental makeup and is a competitor on the mound • Potentially one of the top pitchers in the Pac-10.

    Report: Yanks, Cashman talking deal
In last year of his current contract, GM to discuss extension

    http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20080605&content_id=2845985&vkey=news_nyy&fext=.jsp&c_id=nyy

"NEW YORK -- A potential contract extension for Yankees general manager Brian Cashman will be discussed this week while the club holds a summit in Florida, according to a report published on Thursday by the Newark (N.J.) Star-Ledger.
"We're going to be talking about it," Yankees co-chairman Hank Steinbrenner was quoted as saying.

Cashman was present at the First-Year Player Draft in Orlando, Fla., on Thursday, overseeing the Yankees, who were primed to select 28th in the first round. Cashman has served as the Yankees' general manager since 1998, though his contract expires after this season.

Asked if he wants to keep Cashman and if Cashman wants to stay, Steinbrenner told the Star-Ledger, "That's the impression I get.""
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------
I would be very happy with his extension

At least Wang finally had a solid outing!

If Wang can wake up, and Moose and Ras keep pitching like they have, this team MAY have some chance to make a run. At least we can hope.

No indications of an injury, and with the theory that "hitters hit" its just a matter of time that he will find his grove.....that said, he is a huge part of the Yanks = a .500 club.
