    Here is my thinking:

-Ronnie Brown apparently is genetically incapable of playing 16 games as the feature back, this is a well known fact of life with him.

-Ricky Williams is 33, and had shoulder surgery, big man can still run but he just is not a feature back any longer (meaning bulk of carries) and at 33, how much is it wise to bet that he plays 16 games himself?

It at least should be assumed that neither plays all 16 games, that leaves who else but Pat Cobbs? All 5'9 205 of him.

So what should be the next move? Keep 4 Rb's? If so, who?

If there is a #5 Wr, Sparano sounds as if he is more than happy to make Cobbs the KR as a portion of "his special plans for Cobbs".

THAT is why I'm scratching my head over this, why all this confidence in a Rb with 33 career carries who is coming off of an ACL injury, he could easily wind up being the feature back early in the year and there is no reason to think he could handle that role.

Let alone KR duties, this is poor strategy on Sparano's part.

Maybe QB's that have a realistic shot at ever being more than a back up, one that everyone is not praying that he never sees the field.

Cobb may never be a star or even a starter..... but he's not going down as one of the Fins biggest draft blunders in history, either.

And yeah, you're damn right he was a mistake..... from the very beginning.

NO ONE........takes midget, spread QB's at #44 over all. There's a reason for that..

Oh wait, let me stop, I heard Pat White is getting upset. Wouldn't want him to twitter.... :shifty:

    Sorry, back to Cobbs

Don't read too much into what Sparano says about Cobbs......hell he's probably just hoping he hasn't lost a step. Much ado about nothing, IMO.

Cannot wait to see what he can do during TC.

Hmm, Sparano and Henning love his game, and that is a mistake imho.

We've past the point of "hard worker" being a needed attribute and moved into "we need some playmakers", hell construction workers put in hours, that doesn't mean they can start at Rb in the NFL let alone return kicks.

Blue collar/lunch pail is fine, now how many of those types of players were at skill positions in the AFC or NFC Championship games?

    at Wr/Rb/Te?

My answer is "none", there is a reason for that.

not the first time sparano expressed love for cobbs
    remember last offseason

    http://www.palmbeachpost.com/dolphins/content/sports/epaper/2009/08/12/0812dolphins_notebook.html

i like what cobbs brings us as a 3rd down back but i have to agree it would be a disaster if we had to rely on him to run between the tackles. not real fond of him as a KR either
i hope they keep hilliard again. he did a nice job on special teams last season and is a better option if we get in a situation to have to use him as an every down back.
doesnt solve the KR issue but hey sparano is stubborn and once digs in well....
i would like to see hartline get a chance to return punts but bess is tony's man apparently.... on a different note

    Eric Kumerow...Eddie Moore..Jamar Fletcher..

    John Beck.

The Phins have busts o' plenty to choose from.

Now if one wishes to discuss White rationally, we could "translate' what Sparano had to say about him during the OTA pressers..I think I can speak "Sparanoese" by now..:D

"He gained 18 pds since he has been here"

    Translation:

"He was completely underdeveloped physically when he arrived"

"He is starting to make his reads quicker"

As opposed to last yr when he couldn't read the playbook let alone a defense.

    "He is making anticipatory throws"

Last year if the receiver wasn't wide open Pat would miss them badly

"I seen him do some of those things"

    For the first time.

"We had to run Pat out of the building so the Super Bowl Teams could practice"

The coaches needed a break, Pat is going to have to do some of those things himself, coaching can only take a player so far and hour after hour of coaching does not replace that individual work that a successful NFL Qb does.

Sparano has a curious mix, when he talks about a player's body, it is because he is reticent to speak about their football playing flaws, when he speaks of extra work, he really is saying that they are really raw and working to overcome them but it is iffy.

When Sparano says "seen some of those things" it means that he has not seen from a player.

    Sparanoenglish.

Let me add that when Sparano compares a player to a player he coached previously, that is seriously high praise, he likes what he is seeing, he compared Wake to Ware, and Thiggy to Romo, for Sparanoenglish that is when he is being serious, he rarely makes comparisons to previous players he has coached.

Can we give up on Cobbs and Bess as returners already? Just because they are "shifty" or "quick" doesn't mean they are "fast" and all we're doing is giving up field advantage any time one of these lead boots wearing returners gets the ball. Bess even fumbled a few punts so it's not like he's back there for sure-handedness. I swear if one of them gets run down from behind by a linebacker again (Bess) I'm going to lose it...Ok rant off.

I guess, I question Hillard's and Sheets' ability to be that more than I do Cobbs... although I aint thrilled with Cobbs carrying a workload either.

Again, if you are questioning the KR, we're on the same page. But as a #3 RB and special teamer? Absolutely...

Sheets is intriguing, but untested. Guys like him float in and out of TCs every season, on every team.

Hopefully he can package his speed with some real football ability and stick; it would be nice to have someone that fast as an option in the backfield. But he's a long-shot.

Hilliard? When Ronnie and Cobbs went down last season and Ricky broke under the weight of the bulk of the carries, Lex had a golden opportunity to step up and shine - and didn't.

I've been saying this since the season ended, but Running Back could go from the strength of the team in terms of talent and depth last offseason to an alarming dearth of options by season's end if injuries hit as hard as last season. Not to mention that Ronnie and Ricky are both free agents after 2010.

Ideally there should be a legit competition for the #3 Rb as the "Ricky and Ronnie are injured" scenario is not merely feverish fan concern.

Imho, carry Cobbs as the #4 Rb, let Sheets and Hilliard fight it out for the #3 Rb, that way Cobbs keeps his roles, and Sheets can ideally return kicks and be a "X" factor with his speed.

Or take Hilliard with his ST ability and size?

that scenario makes much more sense, Sheets v Hilliard for playing time behind R+R, one can return kicks, the other has proven to be a good all around Rb.

To just say "Cobbs will wear all of these hats" is poor strategy.

I just cant see the hype for Sheets you have. I question whether he can make an NFL roster, let alone make an impact. You keep talking about Cobbs size. Well, Sheets is only 2" taller, and is the same weight. Cobbs is built thicker and more compact than Sheets IMO... and has more of a RB type body, vs. Sheets who is built more like a WR IMO.

And keeping Cobbs as a 4th RB so he can keep his roles is the worst idea possible. B/c Cobbs shouldnt have as many roles, which I think was more to your point. He shouldnt be a return man. Just play special teams and be a #3 RB.

If we had a better RB prospect than Cobbs, I'd be cool with that. But IMO, There isnt a RB better on this roster other than Ronnie and Ricky. I'm not thrilled with the idea of either Hillard or Sheets counting towards our regular season roster... unless they just blow up in camp or something. But as of right now, neither has shown me anything... and certainly not near as much as Cobbs has. But if there is an upgrade over Cobbs... I'm game.

Sheets has tweeted he added 8 pds of muscle, putting him in the same size as Curtis Martin..check out the "cam wake v kory sheets" thread in the C Lounge.

Disagree, let Cobbs be the utility player, but don't bet the farm on his ability as a Rb/Kr.

Sheets will have to perform, he has the tools to do so, but he also should have a chance to perform.

I won't bore you with the youtube stuff from Sheets with the 49ers last preseason, but believe me when I say that cat can shake and bake.

That first part is true. Cobbs is also one of those players. I do not know what Cobbs has done to prove to be an "irreplaceable" guy. Cobbs is going to have to fight for his job and Sheets is someone who can take it from him.

I agree about Hilliard. He didn't prove to be irreplaceable either.

Well, getting up to 216lbs would definitely be an improvement. I'll take a look at him in camp. Again, I aint in love with Cobbs to the point I must have him on the team at all costs. If he gets beat out... thats good b/c it means our team is improving itself.

Again, agreed about the KR stuff. I dont think anything should be banked or even invested in that. But I would bank much more on his RB ability than Hillard or Sheets.

Do you not think he will have an opportunity to compete? I mean, of all places? In Miami? Where we embrace competition? Where we enforce it? Where we are extremely results oriented? If Sheets is the better RB... he will be the #3 RB.

What an awful, awful post. Cobbs is a great all around player. He's a special teams ace, a chance of pace back, and probably our best receiving threat out of the backfield. He does it all. And you want to get rid of him? For guys like Sheets and Hilliard, who have proven so much in this league... Wait, no they haven't.

I'm not 100% on the whole 'he can compete' stuff FN, Sparano is very stubborn and loves role players.

Every writer who covered the OTA's commented on his speed, of course it is a different story when the pads come on, but if you attend TC this year, you will notice him.

Cobbs is a multi-function back and TS knows that he could develop into something special. Personally I am still mourning the loss of Jalen Parmalee, who I thought was a better pure runner than Cobbs. Time will tell for both of these guys. While I like Cobbs and Hillard I wish Parmalee was still on the roster, the kid was fast and had great moves.

Iam not sure what his role will be this year, we know he cant return kicks effectively, he does'nt have the quickness you want in a third down back, and I dont see many carries left over after ronnie and ricky are pounding fools..being in involved in the wildcat and playing on defensive special teams may not be enough...will see ya know, if Kory does'nt step up then he'll make it.

load of crap. When we lost Cobbs, the WC took a serious hit. Cobbs provided multiple big, unexpected plays and was a sparkplug for our offense (when he was healthy). Not sure where this bashing of Cobbs is coming from. totally agree with Tony here.

once again, your perspective is skewed. The better question to ask is of the playoff teams last year, how many had 3rd/4th running backs better than Patrick Cobbs?

The same Pat White that couldn't complete a single pass through 15 games and then with an entire quarter all to himself in week 17, still couldn't manage to complete a pass before being taken off the field unconscious on a stretcher? That Pat White? Yeah, he's capable of playing at a high level.

If I was given the ability to cut players, I would dump White in a heartbeat and hold onto my solid 3rd RB & solid special teamer over an undersized #3 QB who can't complete a pass and doesn't contribute to special teams.

I just don't understand the adoration for Lex Hilliard.

Like Cobbs, he's a nice special teams player. But Hilliard's Ronnie/Ricky Lite, meaning he's a player of similar style and dimensions, but not as good. A guy that weighs 240 pounds shouldn't go down so easy IMO. He seems more of a momentum guy than someone who's physical and runs people over.

My point is that he doesn't give you anything different.

I remember Cobbs lining up in the slot against Baltimore in '08 and catching a deep pass over the middle. 5 catches for 64 yards that day. That was one week after he caught 3 for 138 against Houston. That's an added dimension Lex Hilliard doesn't give you. Will Kory Sheets? I'd like to find out. I'd like to see that guy as the Wildcat and returning kicks.

As for the sweep against NYJ, name me one running back who hasn't been hit for a loss on a sweep in this league. It happens. Cobbs isn't the fastest player, and we need speed in the KR role. But getting dropped on that play just means he doesn't have elite speed, which we already knew.

Padre is messin up with his linking to his post in the comments section of the article instead of the article itself.

That being said, Cobbs > Hilliard. Cobbs is a great 3rd back. He's great running the ball, he's great catching the ball, and he's great on special teams. I don't want either of them returning kicks. I'd think that either RGM or Sheets wins that job this year barring someone popping up in TC.

Im shocked that this discussion has gone on for so long. If Pat Cobbs is healthy, he's on the team, period. And its not a mistake, IMO it'd be criminally incompetent to have Pat White on the roster and a healthy Pat Cobbs off of itbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbnmm13433asdfgj. Cobbs is gonna give you some WC snaps, KO/Punt coverage, KO team, and he's a serviceable 3rd string RB. Pat White is not an NFL player. Not saying he will never be one, but the amount of enerygy, practice time etc that it would take to (maybe) make him an effectivce weapon is simply not worth it. Not when youre trying to develop a young QB and youve got the leagues best WC tandem already. If you want cut Cobbs in favor of Hilliard, I disagree, Cobbs is the better/more versatile player. Sheets, Ive seen him on the field for all of one play at the pro level so I dont know how anyone can offer an educated opinion there. Either way, its a 3rd string running back, and if it becomes a major issue during the season, then something has gone terribly wrong.

    This is a good point.

And to build on it, I think we have to also take the practice week into account. Oneo of the things that Sparano loves about Cobbs is that he practices full speed. Every single thing he does in practice is with the same speed and intensity of the games.

That makes you and everyone around you better.

Think about the role of the scout team. Each week, they attempt to emulate the other team's looks and style for the defense. I don't know how many reps Pat Cobbs gets in these situations, but being highly versatile would certainly be a great asset here.

What does that matter? Oh, that's right, nothing at all. Cobbs reminds me of Kevin Faulk. Would you not want Kevin Faulk on your team? Cobbs is also a ST ace. Would you prefer us going back to the days of giving up a return TD every game? No, I'm quite sure wouldn't. Cobbs does it all, and isn't going anywhere.
