In news that possibly only I care about (at least among people here), the PS3 will have stereoscopic enabled games started tomorrow. I wonder when Killzone 2 will get updated for 3D?
It won't. Wait for Killzone 3. Also, keep in mind that in order to display a 3D image, you need a TV that actually supports the technology.
It's been said K2 will get an update later this year to support 3D, much like MLB 10: the Show was demoed at CES in 3D. And I'm well aware that you need a TV that supports 3D technology to take advantage of 3D games. In addition to a capable tv you need active shutter glasses and possibly an IR emitter for the glasses (depending on what type of glasses you get). This is why I thought K2 would be in 3D at some point: http://ps3.ign.com/articles/108/1081647p1.html However, they updated the article with a statement from Sony: 2 of the 5 mentioned games will be able to be played in 3D, so some of the other games may still happen. I just wouldn't bet on it is all.
No need to issue an update for Killzone 2 when you can just make 3D a bullet point feature for Killzone 3. I don't know who the hell is going to buy a new TV and the extra equipment necessary for 3D, either.
To say there is another game that is 3D. It is a pretty niche market right now. HD is just catching on
Well many people could've bought 3D ready TVs as long as 3 years ago, as DLPs have had that capability for at least that long, so not everyone has to buy a new TV. There are numerous PC games out that can be run in 3D (including WoW as far as I know and Bioshock) for people who wanted to take advantage of the technology. Aside from that, if people haven't bought an HDtv recently (or at all) or people who are just in the market to upgrade their TV in general might buy a 3D capable tv. Plus people who are home theater enthusiasts might be a new TV and the extra equipment. It is indeed a niche market right now, much like blu-ray was in it first came out, and dvd, and laser disc, and color tv etc. Sony has said that around 20 3D games will be available by year's end.
This particular HT enthusiast will never buy a 3D TV unless they're all that exists on the market. And even then I might trawl eBay for an older set.
Last I checked, 3D wasn't a part of anyone's home theater. Sure as hell won't be part of mine. Useless gimmickry, IMO.
Depends on what they are enthusiastic about. Plasma fans hate LCD and LCD hate plasma but both schools have their enthusiasts. Ok hate is a bit extreme but some do take it that far. Some prefer 5.1 some 7.1 and and even a few prefer just plain stereo and so on. An enthusiast doesn't necessarily go after every new trend. In fact some hold on to old trends with a vengeance. Like Mor said current 3d sucks for glasses wearers like me. It is no where near perfected and to this enthusiast is just a way to boost sales. A tech that I wont buy till it is clearer and does not need special glasses. Sorry I got so wordy here. I just get very annoyed that manufacturers are wasting time and product space on 3d when they still need to improve current picture quality and at an affordable price. Samsungs best rated LCD set, as just one example, retails around 7 grand and yet still has issues that engineers could be working to fix instead of putting resources into 3d. Perfect 2d first then move up.
Here's my random video game thought of the day: Yesterday I turned on my desktop, and while I was waiting for a movie to download, I decided to double click on a program that I hadn't run for a couple of years, Lineage 2. I was able to remember my login and password for a private 45x server. I ended up playing for almost 2 hours. It made me wish I had alot of time throughout the day to kill! LOL That sure was fun back in the day playing that game. PVP, grinding, crafting, castle sieges!
Talking about 3D... I turned on my directv yesterday and got the message that my receiver is 3D ready now and will start broadcasting ESPN 3D starting tomorrow.
honestly 3D interests me more than that stupid Natal crap Xbox is doing. I play games cause I'm too lazy to go outside (or it's too hot), putting on some funky glasses would be preferrable to jumping around the room like an idiot IMO.
It enables 3D on that one specific ESPN channel in the low numbers. You still need the TV and equipment to watch it. ESPN hopping on the 3D bandwagon just makes me dislike the technology even more.
The top of the line products will always be more expensive. The technology is considerably cheaper now, as it cost like 7 grand for a relatively basic HDTV like 7 years ago. LCDs (like plasmas and dlps) will always have issues that are inherent with the technology. Engineers won't be able to fix everything no matter how many resources they put in. I'm not quite sure where you are getting your prices either, as the samsung website shows their most expensive LCD as costing $2,500 (and that's merely MSRP). Their most expensive LED tv is 7K (again MSRP), but that TV is like 2 months old (and like I said, it's top of the line).
If they have an LED set that costs $7000, then he's correct when he says Samsung's best LCD costs $7000. After all, LED sets still use LCD panels, they just replace the CCFL backlighting with LED backlighting.
Right, but Samsung does not categorize them as such, they categorize them as LED. Again though, it's Samsung's brand new premiere (non-plasma) display so of course it will cost a lot.
True it is their flagship LED back lit LCD model. It was almost 2 am after working 2nd shift so my post was a bit lazy. Also true they get cheaper. I just bought an LED for 1600 that retailed for 2700 a year ago. I know they can't fix everything but there is room for lessening blooming, flash lighting, back light bleed, etc. They are making strides but I feel they can go further. I'm happy to a degree with my current TV's and my monitor for gaming on the PC but I still think they can and will do better on PQ and lag and so on. Maybe it will take OLED or a new tech, who knows?
I'm with Desides on this one. 3D is a fad that Avatar turned main stream and Sony is (again) trying to rake in a bazzillion dollars. We're just now warming up to HD and Blu-Ray and they're already wanting us go fork out thousands more dollars just to see things pop out? Nah. I personally enjoy regular Avatar a lot more than the 3D version.
Grandpa Simpson over here. 3D is a fad that is here to stay. At least in theatres. What is wrong with Sony trying to make money?
Absolutely nothing is wrong with Sony trying to make money. Not knocking them. They have (smartly) spotted a fad and are trying to cash in on enthusiasts, suckers, whatever. Mor power to them. I just think it's too much too early. The HDTV adoption rate isn't even 50% yet and you want to roll out 3D? Come on. Also, I agree that 3D will stay in theaters. People love that stuff. 2 hours in a theater with 3D glasses on isn't so bad. 9 hour gaming sessions with 3D glasses on is very bad.
It may well vary from person to person, but I have read accounts of people who have played PC games for 6+ hours without any significant complaints of eye strain or head aches or anything (I have no 1st hand experience yet, and I doubt you do either at that time length) I don't think we can really determine if it's bad or not yet. I thought I read that HDTV adoption is currently around 60% (can't find an article, though it is definitely at least 50% according to an article from May). Supposedly HDTVs are the fastest adopted of TV technology in the US since VCRs though.
I can believe that. The concept of a flat panel set is very popular in the US. The thinner, the better, as far as the average consumer is concerned. I'd bet a dollar that HD source subscription rates lag well behind that 60% adoption, though. A lot of people think that just having an HDTV means they're getting an HD image.
If someone took that bet you'd be a dollar richer for sure. Well, I don't know what would constitute "lagging well behind" but sadly there are plenty of people with (strictly) SD feeds and composite cables running to their sets.
when they have 3D without glasses it will probably take off. I still want to see a NFL game in 3D. I have heard it is amazing
