Thoughts on the Atogwe Situation

Visiting NFL.com and ESPN today reminded me that Antoine Bethea was still a Free Agent. He just signed a 4 year extension worth $27 million which averages out to about $6.75 million a year but it is front loaded to pay out $18 million over the first two.

I think this bodes well for our chances to sign Atogwe to a fair deal simply because those are two Pro-Bowl Safeties who are getting less than the $7 million/annum that Atogwe wants. Looking at it, he, Collins, and Bethea have near identical stats (if you estimate Bethea's forward one year) except Bethea is a tackling machine compared to both of them.

Taking into account his injuries and his lack of Pro-Bowl births, I think we have some leverage against him when comparing him to the other players. I think he may have been waiting on the terms of Bethea's contract before proceeding and if so, he may be locked up this week by either Miami, St. Louis, or an outside chance of Detroit.

This also leads me to clash with those who don't want Atogwe or claim he is overrated. He has near identical stats to Nick Collins and Antoine Bethea. But you have to take into account he played with a defense that had a horrible pass rush and got little pressure on the QB. The Rams had 25 sacks in 09 while we had 44. The added pressure would almost surely increase his interception total. You also have to note he missed 4 games last season too. Even so he had more tackles than Collins. Just looking at it, I think if the FO is willing to shell out the $6+ million/year for Atogwe, we'd have a pretty great FS with the added help of a pass rush. With guys like Wake on third down getting pressure on the QB, a guy like him could seriously blow open a game for us.

Just some thoughts on my part.

Without a doubt the Trifecta is at least waiting for Atogwe to accept reality before they open serious negotiations with him, assuming they intend to. If I'm Atogwe, I lower my demand and start a bidding war between the teams that want him for reasonable money. This could result in his ending up somewhere between the lowered demand and the $7 mil.

As to the rest of the OP's post, I agree that we could definitely use Atogwe.

Bethea signing that deal could mean Bob Sanders is outta Indianapolis..

That is a player I really like and imho he fits what we do.

    Bob Sanders?

He is more injury prone than Ronnie Brown. And im sure these injuries have affected his level of play.

I have no issues with signing Atogwe. The only thing is, apparently (and I say that in every sense of the word, because I have no proof), but Atogwe is looking for Rolle money or better. He made a bit over $6M last year. What seems to be the word around this thing is that Atogwe and his agent have a slightly overblown opinion of his abilities... I like the kid and he's a decent FS, but he's not in the category of Reed, Sanders or Polamalu. That would be worth that $7M figure he's looking for. He isn't even in the category of Sharper or Rolle, imo either...The problem with Atogwe is that he wants the $7M figure and is worth much less than that...

My first sentence was that I had no issues with signing him and I say that even if we pay the $7M figure, not because I think he's worth that much, but because no matter what we pay for him, he's a better option than Clemons, Jones, Culver...

Nice post/thread, hopefully something happens with or without Atogwe very soon. We've had far too many threads on the topic already, starting to feel like he's Ted Ginn deja vu all over again.

Dolphin, Ram, Lion, or otherwise, I just want the kid to get signed so I can stop seeing a new thread about him every single damn day.
