Brilliant. North Korea were outstanding. Set up brilliantly by their manager, they defending with 10 behind the ball, then shut Brazil down as they tried to manipulate the play by shifting it from side to side. The Koreans worked so hard and thoroughly deserved to be right in the game. Can't put any blame on the keeper for the 1st goal. No way should Maicon score from there.

Dunga's reputation will be in tatters if they continue to play like that, especially with Felipe Melo and Gilberto Silva holding and just Luis Fabiano up top. On that evidence, Spain would take Brazil apart.

You mean can or cant....at that angle boom, the keeper should have been playing closer to the post, cutting Maicon's angle off, at that point the only thing he can do is dump it over the top.....I wasnt impressed much with Fabiano today...Like the energy Nilmar brought in place of Kaka...

    That was borderline disgraceful.

North Korea packed it in from the first minute and Brazil seemed either confused that the 689th ranked soccer nation would play like that or they were just incompetent.

They just wasted the first 30 minutes.

They had to see that there was no danger of NK even attempting to develop a counter and they should have just pushed it through the air to get their attempts.

    Kaka' was just plain bad.

They then get a glorious goal and the North Koreans seemed to fold and then Brazil got their 2nd. THEN THEY GIVE UP A GOAL! LOL! On a ridiculous sequence.

Brazil loses a match vs. Ivory Coast or Portugal..they might not get out of the group. How do you like them apples?

Boom, one game (and the 1st game) is too little to judge Dunga's team. Brazil didn't play any significant friendly to prepare for the WC, Brazil is getting rithym with this game. The team will grow through the competition. And add to that the poor play Kaká displayed, he will only get better gaining back his physical old form. This team misses his vertical attack style.

Since Dunga's arrival on this brazilian team, this is his style of play, ugly though efficient soccer.
He won South America Cup, Confederations Cup and classified 1st on eliminatories. He basically won everything he could, so I'd give him the benefit of the doubt.

Not get out of the group? c'mon..like Ivory Coast and Portugal had a "great" match earlier..... we will surprise many people....

I like the fact we won 94' and 02' as underdogs, and lost 98' and 06' as favorites. Here we are underdogs again. :pointlol:

    Oh...they were terrible.

But they are capable. One goal and Brazil can lose.

I still think they win out and probably make the quarters or beyond. But that was an un-inspiring start.

Well said, you cannot write off Brazil on the basis of that performance against the North Koreans. Its very difficult to break down a team when they park the team bus in front of the goal. Add to it that they were very well organized and disciplined. That Korean team will cause Portugal and the Ivory Coast problems also.

The main thing tonight was to get the three points, something other favorites in France, England and Italy did not get. I'd agree that the selection was confusing considering how the Koreans were going to play, but they were still capable to create moments of brilliance, such as Elano's goal.

    I agree.

Nobody's more sick of the diving and flopping around then me. I never said Italy doesn't do it. They do it a lot and it makes me sick. But it's the notion that they're the only team that does it, or the notion that they do it more often than other teams that bothers me.

Because the truth is, they don't do it more than other teams. In fact, the Portugese and Eastern European players beat Italians at diving every day of the week. Argentina, Brazil, and many of the other South American teams are no strangers of the flopping and diving either.

Paraguay outdove Italy in that game 3:1. But because Grosso received a questionable PK call against Australia in 2006, people love to put the spotlight on them. Like Thierry Henry hasn't won games (see France-Spain in '06) for France from diving. Like Sergio Busquets of Spain and Barcelona didn't flop on the ground and get Thiago Motta thrown out of a semi final CL game. I could go on and on and on.

It's one of the reasons I respect the English and most importantly the EPL. They don't accept it. It's not as common in the games because it's not tolerated by the refs. La Liga, the rest of Europe and especially the Serie A need to follow their example

its not just the italians for sure, but the thing i hate most is when teams are so unsure of where they are going to get their goals from, they are going to flop their way into set pieces

it surely isnt limited to the italians.

i just cant imagine getting a graze on the shoulder and grabbing my face lol. it would just never occur to me. and i would hope my coach would chew me out for it

one thing i have seen less of is the rolling around grabbing the ankle and then 2 seconds later sprinting down the pitch.

sometimes the camera doesnt show everything, but still. be a man.

About the snowing, in the intercontinental cup final between Porto and Peñarol in 1987, which was played in Japan, there was a snow storm in the middle of the game. The Uruguayans had never in their lives seen, and even more played in the snow, while the Portugese had seen it alot. The game ended in a 2-1 OT win by the Europeans, but the snow was definetely a huge factor. I wouldn't like to see it at the WC.

Tomorrow, among other games, Uruguay vs South Africa. Should be fun. Its the first game of the 2nd legs of games

Borderline disgraceful? Korea were terrific. If they'd have played on the front foot then Brazil would have torn them apart. Instead they packed midfield, worked hard off the ball and frustrated Brazil. The Koreans deserve a lot of credit.

Kaka has been struggling with injuries all season. That was as good as Robinho's played in 18 months.

Oh don't get me wrong, they'll get to the semis at least. What I meant was that Dunga's style of play is irritating the Brazilian purist who's not used to seeing such a defensive way of playing.

First, LOL at the Lego video... I'm in tears and can hardly see to type...

I too thought N Korea were very solid. They stuck to their game plan even when they were down 1-0. Great teamwork. Would be amazing to see both N and S Korea advance and then end up playing each other. LOL at the N Koreans supposedly hiring chinese actors to play the part of their fans in the crowd.

This first game, the good teams are trying not to lose (save Germany) and it's made for poor games IMO. It should pick up each week of course.

Think the announcers they've had on ESPN/ABC have been solid... the Ian Darke (or was that Martin Tyler) and Ally McCoist duo are especially good. The calling of that Brasil match was hilarious. But I'm not a fan of John Harkes (nor Alexi Lalas for that matter). Something strange about seeing a washed up American soccer player pretend to be an expert on anything and everything... in a word arrogant.

Great teamwork by Korea and they had a great plan that they stuck with throughout that game. They fought hard and never gave up. But seriously, Brazil looked like a team that was in shock in the first half, then stopped playing once they got up 2-0. The fact that North Korea was able to play Brazil competitively means absolutely nothing to me. You don't go in panic mode after a win. Brazil is still the favorites to me. I truly believe they did not take North Korea seriously and paid for it early on.

Won't judge Brazil until they play Portugal & Ivory Coast.

Rightly or wrongly, diving is just another form of gamesmanship, which has always been part of football. Every week you see players timewasting, asking ref's to show opponents yellow or red cards, off the ball stuff, feigning injury etc, etc, its just part of the game sadly.

No doubt that it has its roots in continental Europe, but it is now prominant all over the world. You watch any football game these days and you will see at least some form of dive in the game.

Spain have too much quality up front and in midfield to not score on the Swiss IMO. Even though I think they will be without Torres, they still have Villa and have so much talent in midfield.

I'd expect a similar type of game and result to that of Holland vs Denmark, Spain will win, but without setting the world alight.

If there's one player I can't stand on Spain it's Sergio Ramos. Why does he always try to be a hero and take these ridiculous shots?

know your role and get the ball to your playmakers to score and create goals like xavi, villa, silva, iniesta for crying out loud!

Spain can really pass the ball around but the Swiss are just collapsing back on the Spainish rush and they are having no luck with rushes.

Now the Spainish are flopping, apparently Gasol watched alot of Soccer..:D

Wow. Spain loses to the Swiss. What a crazy end to the first leg of the tournament!!

I didn't get to see much of the game, just the last 10 minutes or so.

How was Spain's attack for the most part of the game? What I saw was mostly crosses into the box, kind of away from Spain's game really.
